I’ve noticed you use drafts, apple notes, and craft. Is that just for the videos? or do they all 3 serve a purpose? I ask because I’d be curious to see your notes app work flow and what each of them are for as well as their setups to get some new ideas for use cases. I’m sure I’m not the only one that would enjoy a video or videos covering this.

Really liked this, Chris. I’ve used MindNode in the past and am a huge user of Drafts, but I never put two and two together to flesh out the map further in Markdown. A very useful tip - thanks!

I absolutely love MindNode! I map all my projects in this app. It lets me know Exactly how long I need... Its what I use to do on paper in high school... who knew

I have a subcription to Adobe and there are months where I do not use lightroom - rather just pay one fixed cost. I do not know I could create enough mind maps per month to justify paying $20 per year - I would probbaly make a few and then forget about it for several months like I do with Adobe before picking it up again. Same thing with Lumafusion - I bought it and have not used it in over a year but thankful it is not subscription. I really like the exxtra frills from payware but find I get along just find with the Apple apps so I avoid craft. Love that drafts is free - the best bargain. You should do a video on best free apps that provide value outside the core Apple apps.

I’ve used mind maps for years. It helps get thoughts out of my head and on to something more workable. What ever I had handy such a legal pad, printer paper, but I finally found SimpleMind. It’s not as robust as MindNode but it works for me. 😁

Great video Chris really enjoy the app workflow videos - I use Mindnode and also use it with Drafts. - do initial outline of projects in Drafts then into Mindnode for detailing then use the integration with Things 3 for task management - looking forward to your next Drafts video 😁

Hi Christopher. This comment will change your life given your workflow if you don’t know that trick. Select your bullet list in Notes and drag and drop it in mindnotes. It will create the mindmap for you, hierarchy and everything. At least it works with iThoughts and most apps I’ve used. You can use the same workflow with any text app that uses Tab (« \t ») as outline. I used this trick at work to give a visual representation of the hierarchy of a 10k+ rows excel file with a quick Python script.

I've been using Xmind across platforms (including Linux) for quite awhile. sad they discontinued the idea of a "mindmap commons" (think a public wiki for mindmaps) What I have yet to see is anyone bring back collaborative mindmaps (think Google Docs for mindmaps - why Google has not taken this on baffles me to this day!) Mindjet technically prototyped it in 2002 then proceeded to further pursue vision/project/task management by acquiring Cohuman & then botched it up so badly they got acquired by Corel & the whole Mind Manager product became a lost cause 😭 I'll be a happy camper when I can create/manipulate node relationships w tools for thought like Roam yet have the clean cut look of maps created by dedicated apps. I definitely look forward to UAS (UIs as a service, just made this up) able to interface our raw data in a variety of ways!

Apple is working on an app called Freeform and it's exactly what you want. It's more drawing based, but it looks like it has shapes you can use as well. It should be out in the fall.

Loved the video but I have a question. You exported as Markdown, isn’t the result basically the same thing as the notes you wrote in your Notes? So it’s from text to map to text again?
@ChrisLawley

It’s mostly a way for me to organize my notes. Filter out duplicate or useless information. It’s also a way to build an outline for me. I like the visual aspect of it.

honestly this app feels like it is quite limited. what if you are mapping things that are much more interconnected than a tree can depict. a tree is good for illustrating ancestry but it wouldn’t be good for mapping ecological relationships say between plants, herbivores, and carnivores.

Long-time fan of MindNode here. You might be interested in Obsidian with the Mind Map or Outliner plugins, that way your mind map and your Markdown are one and the same. Plus, great support for keyboard shortcuts which you can customize exactly as you like.

Why are you retyping your notes? If you copy all the text in your note and then paste it into MindNode in outline view, it will paste each line/ sentence/textblock as individual nodes. Then you can go to the map view and drag to organize them.

Cause a lot of my notes are filled with duplicate information, or stuff I don’t need anymore. I put everything in notes and use this to filter out and organize everything. Plus it doesn’t take my long to type things on a hardware keyboard.
