Hi Mandy, I'm just back from the pool and it was a good day in the pool! :) My 2nd training session now focused on this. I don't know if I have the extension at the optimum depth yet ( I'll film it again in a few weeks) but it really "clicked" today. I feel my legs are up higher and I can more easily get into a better catch position. I did this in a variety of drills and I felt faster with less effort. I'm just going to continue to work on this for a few weeks. Really pleased! Thank you so much for your videos and help.

Hi Mandy, great topic and again you've really nailed something I need to focus on having recently seen a video of me swimming (horror show!) My extension looks too shallow whereas I had always thought I had a tendency to go too deep. I had a couple of comments and questions! When you're extending high in the demo it looks to me that your hips and legs drop slightly, but are brought up again when you go back to the extension depth that works for you? At around 3:45 you mention about finding this sweetspot for you so you can "stabilise without moving or bending". Can you elaborate on what might happen if you haven't got your extension dialed in correctly? Hope you had a great Christmas Mandy and Happy New Year!
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Endo, yes that is correct. I have a slightly higher profile so when I extend too high, I feel shoulder/neck tension immediately. This also leads to my hips dropping slightly but not significantly. However, if I swam like this for a long period of time, then it’s common to feel lower back pain. At the point of 3:45, if my arm extended to high either my arm would move back completely straight or I would drop my elbow losing the catch. So at this time stamp you can see I have a good hold of the water with my right arm. Definitely a good point though. I will show what happens when the arm falls and the catch is lost in another video. Hope this helps and Happy Holidays to you as well! -CM 🏊🏼‍♂️

Hi Mandy, many thanks for the explanation. That’s exactly what’s happening to me. I’ve a much shallower extension than I thought I was doing. I also thought i was keeping my elbow high during the catch but I can see I’m dropping it. The camera never lies! 😭 Can’t wait time get back in the water and try the demo you’ve shown. Thanks! 👌

More leverage is what I'm after. I often try to focus on the catch in training so that I can feel that forward momentum. I guess if it works right, it's like I am being pulled through a water tunnel. It feels great but slows down greatly when I'm tired. How can I keep that momentum going for longer distances? Is it just a matter of fitness or should I pace myself more? Thank you again for such helpful tips, Coach Mandy!! :)
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David it could be one of two things: 1) When you start to fatigue, you end up pulling from the shoulders causing the feeling of slowing down and you end up using more energy exponentially. Or 2) You may be swimming a little too fast or too slow of a tempo to be able to sustain for long period of time. It’s a matter of finding the perfect balance. (If you use a tempo trainer, try experimenting between 1:00-1:15 on mode 1) Starting testing each scenario out by slowing your tempo down, speeding it up, and measure how you feel. Also, focus on connecting the catch from your hips instead of your shoulders. 👍🏼 What your feeling is correct though! It does take a level of fitness in order to train this pattern for a consistent period of time in order for your body to adapt. Hope this helps and let me know how it goes! -Coach Mandy 👏🏼😄🏊🏼‍♂️👍🏼

@@SWIMVICE This is great advice, Coach Mandy! I will keep these in mind, try them, and let you know how it goes. Yesterday in the pool I was able to sustain my pace for a longer distance, maybe because I was conscious of what you taught in this video. :) Thank you for your expertise! It's so helpful. Hmm..... I can remember old school method when the straight arm pull was used, and your arm came in at about a 45 degree angle, which made sense because you were using arms more like oars rather than the newer version where arms are used more like a paddle/high elbow/vertical forearm. You are still going a bit deeper than I do, and I am wondering if that is because you seem to use more of a distance style where I am more of a sprinter. I think even on more distance type sets for me, I come in about a hand span under the water, and you are deeper than that. Some of the elite sprinters are entering at full arm stretch, hand at 90 degrees, and arm on top of the water. Sprinters are weird.....
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 4 жыл бұрын
robohippy my arm goes slightly deeper because this is more of a distance pace but yes sprinting is different. As of now, I am able to get a good hold of water due to where my arm is extending. However, this movement will improve overtime. Have you had someone film your freestyle?
@robohippy
@robohippy 4 жыл бұрын
@@SWIMVICE I haven't had any filming of my swimming yet. I may do some when I get around to filming my over arm side stroke. I can't imagine any swim team not having cameras for work outs, both above water and below. With my side stroke, since I am on my side, it makes it easy to observe other swimmers, and as Yogi Berra said, "you can observe a lot just by watching". I did notice that when you breathe here, your right arm goes more shallow, as you breathe on your left side.
@SWIMVICE

@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 4 жыл бұрын
Kursat Oner I can see how it looks lower specifically when comparing to a breath. I tend to extend a slightly higher when breathing, but it’s the same depth on a non breathing stroke. Especially since my left arm is closer to the camera it looks to be lower. Have you tried demo 1 before? If not, try it out the next time you go to the pool and let me know what position feels best! 🏊🏼‍♂️🙌🏽 -CM
