Welcome to the first of this two part watercolor workshop, taking viewers through the process of painting a Rose Botanical. This is the second watercolor workshop I did for Strathmore last Spring and the third video overall. So in case you missed it, I did a two video watercolor landscape workshop which can be seen here at these links.

So glad to see some botanical watercolor in the traditional form! Have been studying for the last 4-5 years. Julia Trickey, Anna Mason and Billy Showell have great online teaching sites for those interested in going further. Thank you!

Thank You. Thank you. Ive been an admirer of your talent and your videos for quite some time, but this subject (botanicals) are what im most passionate about learning to paint. Your instructions and tips were very helpful to a learning watercolor artist. Im looking forward to your next videos that complete this painting.

I am so glad I ran across your channel. I'm trying to do a botanical journal of my own garden this year and its hard to find this style on you tube. I'm warming up with looser illustrations, but I hope to hone my skills enough to have more scientific renderings for reference. I'll be revisiting these often, along with your channel!

Beautiful! As someone who is learning to watercolor, I find that having the reference on the screen is quite beneficial for me as I can then see why you are doing the things you’re doing, or using the colours you’re using. Just a thought! Thanks! ✌🏼

Great video Steve! 😆 Very helpful to see the colors & your palette...thanks! The next time you order from Jerry's, if you don't have one...I would highly recommend you pick up the Vanish 4 in 1 eraser. For me, it erases beautifully without damaging the paper even if the you have painted over the graphite. I use it on my wood burnings to. I need to pick up some more! 😉
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 7 жыл бұрын
I'll look it up. Usually I just keep the pencil extremely soft and light and it erases very easily. Kneaded erasers are very gentle on the paper and usually suffice.

See if you can find the Prang watercolour set! I found it on amazon and got the 16 colour set for less than £10. I think its more easy to find the the US and Canada though, but again, Amazon is your easiest option. They are surprisingly good quality and bloom absolutely beautifully (note that the Prang set is like the Reeves set, it is less than Student grade but Prang is at the top of the class for its grade, Reeves is very chalky and a bit muddy sometimes). If you're wanting to go to Student grade paint, the Winsor and Newton Cotman 45 half pan set is a good place to start, you can get the 45 half pan set off of Amazon for less than £30. If you can afford the COtman set, I'd definitely encourage you to try them out! ArtDiscount.co.uk is also a really great place to get cheap art supplies if you're in the uk (note that I'm not sponsored by anyone, I just think you'd find these things useful). Lastly, I believe Mind Of Watercolour uses a lot of Mission Gold paints though I may be wrong as I've only just started watching him.

Hi Steve! Beautiful rose!!! Thanks so much for all the info on this one! I'm understanding more and more watercolor...and glazing gives more control over what we are doing, quite different than spontaneous painting ! I love them both. I know you have probably a lot to do and so little time but i was wondering if you could throw from time to time how you draw and some tips.....and maybe if it's not much to ask some advice on good books like you did with watercolor? It will be fantastic....I've been away from drawing and I'm quite rusty!!! Just following your advice....."painting is drawing whit ink"......I'm practicing......I'm practicing!!!! Thanks, God bless you!

Sounds trite and over simplified but its the truest thing I know, to get better at drawing just draw as often as possible. Daily if possible.

I was painting some autumn leaves yesterday myself, even though I sketched the leaf very accurately the end result wasn't perfect. It look far from natural. Can you please show how you paint the veins in the leaves and how you get the borders to be accurate in your next video??

Well these videos were made last year for Strathmore, so the video is already done, but good news! how I handled the leaf veins are part of the next video. 😃 I'll be posting that video in a couple of days. Hey Steve! Thanks for another great instructional video! You list all of your supplies, but not your table easel. Do you normally paint on an easel, or do you use it to make videotaping easier? Also.. pros of using a mechanical pencil? Thanks again!

Hey, Steve! Mine is looking pretty good, but I messed up my first petal and I have all this pigment settling along the lines of the edges of petals! You know what I mean? How can I fix? I tried using a semi-wet brush and blending, but it's hard with this hot pressed paper to get it up. Ugh. Help, please! Jess
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 7 жыл бұрын
Generally, pigment collecting at the edges is caused by putting down a wash then coming back after that with more water. It pushes the pigment thats there out to the edge. As you go back into a wash to apply more color or even it out, the brush should be gradually dryer.
@jessicawarren1850
@jessicawarren1850 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response and for the explanation. You're exactly correct. I did go back into the first little section of petal a couple more times because it was just too light. I was attempting to darken the little shaded area, and because I'm such a perfectionist, it really worked against me this time. Haha after that initial mistake, I was very happy with how my other petal areas turned out. The shading out to white was perfectly seamless and has a nice ombré effect. This tutorial is the perfect exercise for me because I needed to learn that technique since I'm such a beginner with this medium. Thank you, again. Love, Jess xox
