There are some Napoleonic games and groups that are definitely more pedantic, this game tends to attract more players who just want to push Napoleonic soldiers around for fun and love of the period.

Thanks for the video! Has anybody tried to cut up the strips for a 2 full + 2 1/2 stand set-up? (Cutting off the flank companies, I guess.)
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Personally I think it would be quite tricky, the models are so closely ranked that they share space, there are a few places that are better than others, but in many cases you’d end up having to re sculpt whole arms etc.
@vondorffy71232 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms Perhaps those parts could be 3D printed. Admittedly, it would be fiddly. Still, 240mm frontage is too long for the tables I can hope to play on. 160 would be much better.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Yeah maybe, I don’t know how easy it would be to 3D sculpt an elbow to print and add to a mini, but that stuffs way beyond me 😂 The frontage is very large, and something that many people are aware of. In smaller games I’m planning on using 3 stands instead of 4, you can always add the 4th strip if you need it to represent a formation like a square, but same the space when in line.

Gin and Whiskey are always a good option for persuasion. The Sarissa buildings are very much true 15mm and on the large size. I have a mix of sizes, Empires of War in the UK are slightly smaller 15s, and I use a lot of 10mm as well, especially for ACW.

Really looking forward to getting my hands on an Infantry sprue. Want to see if I can break a few units up to 4 fig Napoleons Battles stands (1 inch x 3/4 inch). Cav are perfect as single figs as are the arty batteries. That way I can use them for Nappys battles, Command and Colors board game, and Black Powder. Like the 10 mil buildings though, about the right footprint for representing a town. 15MM buildings look like they may take up too much ground. For officers I grabbed an Old Glory French officer pack about 25 years ago and put in on the shelf. Had like over 20 named French Marshalls including a wounded one in a carriage (can not remember which one). As a joke one of the Marshalls was named Dillion (yep, from the Gunsmoke TV series). Have a mix of 3000 TTG, Old Glory, Essex, And Mini Figs already of which over half were painted and based for Napoleon's Battles. Hoping this can generate enough interest in the period to get some of the guys at the hobby store into it. Huge Sharpe's fan myself (movies and books) so plan on going Spanish Front myself also. Also explains why I am interested in seeing if I can cut down the large lines into smaller bites to meet my basing scale. Cav, arty, and officers are perfect though. That was one major drawback of the Civ War line was the scale. Only Kallistra really fit well with them and anyone with pre existing collections could not really use the new line. I think they learned their lesson on that one, and this gives people options on specialty units like the French Guard and the like so they do not have to produce everything. Really, really, want them to do Austrians though with helms for the line troops.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
I think the strips can be cut, but they’re more than just closely ranked, they’re sculpted on top of each other in places, so you will have to green stuff arms/elbows back on I think. You will have to let me know how you get on.
@shadowcat31633 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms I figured as much and also took into account losing maybe 20% of the figs in the process. That would still give me 1 1/2 units per sprue plus arty and a officer.
@bickercity63923 жыл бұрын
Great stuff as always. I think for your terrain you could do something similar to what you are doing with the unit size regarding number of stands. If you are playing a smaller battle you could use the 15mm terrain and if you are playing a larger scale battle use the 10mm with the smaller footprint.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Yep I think painting up both scales will be worthwhile, being flexible will be the key.

Another great video! The biggest table I can manage in my dedicated gaming room is 4 x 6, so in reality I only need to get a couple infantry brigades for each nation Britain/France, with some cavalry thrown in for good measure. When I set up my American Civil War epic scale forces on the table, it was surprising how quickly the table filled up. I'll probably get a starter set for each and then one of the larger Sarissa building sets and that would be about it. I already made a dedicated set of 13mm generic terrain in the form of trees, walls, roads, rivers, etc. for Civil so all of that is universal regardless of time period. Like Stewart, I will probably focus on somewhat smaller engagements from the Peninsular campaigns. One thing I have found is that sometimes doing smaller, more manageable battles can be more enjoyable than trying to actually do a Waterloo or Gettysburg in their entirety. I find it to be the most interesting to do a part of a larger battlefield, say do just the 1st day at Gettysburg, of do Waterloo but only the right flank of the British line, etc. and then form your scenarios and force sizes based on that. Back last January I got the mega-starter set for Civil War. In the end I realized that I only needed to paint up maybe 3/5 of that whole box because it wasn't feasible to have more forces that on my table size. I'm able to field about 10 regiments each for Union and Confederate with accompanything artillery. At 3-5 stands per regiment its the maximum you can comfortably have on a table and still have enough room for meaningful maneuvering and combat.

Thank you Mike. Totally agree, on army size Vs table size, much of my collection will sit on shelves only to see a couple of big games away from home.

Great video, very inspiring, going through all of the content now Epic has got a green light LOL. I'mm be doing project based similar to you. I did have it all mapped out already but I may need to tinker with which divisions I do dependent on the a) the flags that Warlord provide (no need to make it hard by doing other battalions) and b) which units were in the Peninsular and Waterloo. One thing I'm pondering is the command figures for the bases that are left over from when I cut them in half. While Minifigs / Essex might be close (I'd need to see exactly how close) size wise I'd not be keen on using them if there was any noticeable difference at all. One option I've considered pending anything better coming along (though I can't see Warlord doing command sprues alone given they are on the infantry sprues) is using a mounted officer based as a singleton to be placed in the middle or at the end of a battalion. I can't imagine converting one musket into a standard bearer will be too difficult. Of course, there'd be no Sgt or drummer but for 10 extra battalions I can live with that. The one thing I'm desperately trying to find is 10mm buildings. Overall for big battles I prefer the 10mm footprint than I'd likely use some 15mm from Empires at War or Sarissa for smaller engagements. I'd even be happy with 3D printed stuff, even paid STLs, just a pain trying to find them.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
I think using some spare mounted officers and converting a musket to a flag is a good idea, maybe they will work nicely for some of the allied regiments that only have one flag, and make them stand out more. I’ve used a mix of 10mm and 15mm for my Epic ACW project. I absolutely love the Sarissa kits, but they are very true 15mm, which oddly makes them quite large in footprint for any 15mm (this is based on the ACW kits though, I’ve not built the new ones yet). Some of the 15mm stuff I have from places like Hovels feel more like 12mm in footprint. So for me it’s a mix of what looks right and what suits the in game purpose. I’ll build my Le Belle Alliance and Dacoster House, but I doubt they will see many games, and if they do they won’t be representing themselves, maybe just a building in a corner somewhere. I’ve got the La Haye Sainte kit, but not built it, I imagine it’s going to be a little too large really, but if it’s going to be a key part of a scenario I’m willing to ignore that, especially if it’s the only building on the table. The Empires of war mdf buildings I’ve picked up are really good, the footprint of the is small, but they still seem to scale right.
@joken-actual3 жыл бұрын
Stuart, great VLOG update and thanks for the shoutout 😳. I also picked up Mr Stallard’s comment about is would be great to do a Peninsular sprue so I think I’ll get your wish. I’m starting with the British and really like the value of Le Haye Sainte so will position my army on the Brussels road with units from Pack, Kempt and Ompteda. This gives me scenarios around D’Erlon’s attack, Ney’s cavalry assaults and the Middle Guard attacks late in the day. As I’ll be collecting French too, I’ll be able to use all the sprues. I’ve played my first ACW battle (Greenbriar) on my six foot table and the lines looked full with 8 three base regiments. I over bought the ACW with an additional Union brigade which I’ll never need so in this release I’m going to stick with the base sets and buy the Scots/95th and Imperial Guard sprues and that’ll be my infantry complete at circa 16 battalions a side. I think Mr Stallard hinted in his Q&A that the Scots would be released very close to the initial launch so it doesn’t sound like wave one is coming 3 months after launch? Keep up the great work and I have two regiments of Union and two limbers to complete this month so that I’m ready for Waterloo.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you John. I’m totally with you on not buying too much to start with, I may end with a very similar sized project to you I think. After that I may grab extra brigade boxes, but that’s a way off. You might be right with the wave 2 release not being too far off, I guess they see it as an import part of their vision, so can’t have it being 6 months off. That’s not much at all left to paint for ACW, wish I could say the same 😂

why cant you use the 95th In line sprue but just paint them red ? They have the stovepipe shako don't they ?
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely could. I have a long list of potential uses for the Rifles, but I’m not sure I’m going to have enough stands to stretch to that, I’ll need to regiments of KGL light, and probably my Portuguese from them. I need to crunch my numbers, but you’re spot on, aside from the rifles they’re carrying they would paint up very well.
@mikebersiks32803 жыл бұрын
They are exactly the same as Cacadores and if the rifles bother you, they had rifle-armed companies called Tiradores
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Yep definitely have some of these planned with them. Could work for regular Portuguese as well, seems like they had a mix of Stovepipe Shakos and some with false fronts like the Belgic. With the numbers on sprues I’ll probably be better off using the regular British as regular Portuguese.
@Rusty_Gold853 жыл бұрын
For buildings do you go with footprint area scale of a house or size compare them to the figures ? But to confuse the question do the figures represent 600-800 men over half a kilometre spread out ? I feel it should be along the 10mm for buildings to get a town layout done more realistic that a regiment /battalion surround
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
All great questions, and for me I’d probably say I’ll be flexible with the approach rather than work to a set ground-scale. Essentially accepting it’s an abstract and getting a balance between eyeballing it and fitting what I need on the table - I still think I may switch between 10mm and 15mm terrain based one the size of the game I’m playing. I like to work from historical OOB’s a bit as well, so I may potentially have to run less stands in some units - but 600-800 is a safe average I’d say, maybe 200 a stand is a rough rule of thumb (which would mean tiny buildings or just one or two representing the whole villages/towns).
@mikebersiks32803 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms 600 is a good average for a battalion in Napoleonics which should have a frontage in line of around 200m. The British often had less in the Peninsula depending on the regiment / timing. The ruleset General d'Armee gives their Standard size unit as between 450 - 800 men which is a good rule of thumb. Anything smaller than that is a small sized unit and anything larger is a large one.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
I like that, it means most units fall into that standard size bracket. I’m thinking that for ‘stands’ 2 = Small, 3 = Standard, 4 = Large (though I’ll bring that 4th stand back to represent square etc), matches what I do for Epic ACW and matches Stamina Value as well. I do like the way 4 stands look though, so if I have space on the table I’ll likely use them all.
