Hi Stuart.. regarding some people not regarding Osprey books as a good source ... I agree with you.. shoemakers.. (I'm sure there's another word for them *innocent look*) Anyone painting / modelling isn't writing an academic paper on the subject. All that's /needed/ is basic information that can be easily and quickly accessed, and that's what Osprey books provide. Yes anyone /can/ spend days researching the ins and outs of a cat's wossname but it isn't /necessary to delve into that level of detail. Do I for example need to know the reasons for either world war to find out what colour uniforms were? Err... No :) Keep up the good work! :)

I typed chamfer (but it got altered) the base, I use 3mm hardboard because it’s cheap, also it’s textured on one side which gives a good key to filler or paint it and see how it looks. This makes the building look taller. The other thing is you are looking at the buildings from above, meaning height differences aren’t always that noticeable. I’ve not done any building construction for years but tall buildings with a smaller floor area isn’t new, Charles Grant Sr. Was making them in the 1960’s for use with his 30mm figures.

Here's an idea for flags. The decoration at the top is called the finial. Cut the flagpole in such a way that the finial and part of the pole fit only the top quarter of the flag. Glue the flag around the top quarter beneath the finial, leaving the bottom of the flag as an empty tube. This can then be slid over the pole of the standard bearer. Hope this helps your flag dilemma. Really enjoy your videos for inspiration even though Napoleonics are not my thing (but ACW and WotR definitely are).
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andrew. Strangely enough this was my first idea with the flags, but didn’t go ahead with it with my first unit. I’ll need to sort more Finials, as I should end up with more flags than units in order for them to swap around. But I’ll likely do this, or have flags on pins (or a combination of the two).

I liked your brief showing of the maps & units at Vitoria & Waterloo. Handy that at least Reille, Drouet (later D'Erlon) and Picton appear at both. Like you I prefer the Peninsular but my gaming group are more set for Waterloo, so an overlapping compromise is what I'm looking for. I'm currently painting up some Perry French at 28mm for a game next week.

Re the flag finials - that appear to be the size of a man’s head. I think I’ll chop them off my commands and just top the flag pole with gold paint. That way I can swap some flags around if I need to. Obviously I’ll be keeping the French eagle finials because they’ll have been ‘touched by Old Boney e-self, they have’ as Sergeant Harper might say?
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Finial, that’s it, I couldn’t remember the name the other day. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of pinning my flags or something like that, another comment on this video has suggested it too, and it really makes sense I think.

I'm sold on those buildings I think. I thought I might hunt around for 10mm buildings BUT I play WW2 in 15mm too and those sets (they also have Normandy stuff) would be useable for that too, even better given that the footprint of Empires stuff seems reasonable. Saves having yet another buildings scale too. One of my favourite books for Peninsular is Uniforms of the Peninsular War from Blandford. OOP now I believe but great if you can get it. I have a few for Waterloo (inc the excellent 'Companion' book) along with a a couple of uniform guides. Staring to get my head round what divisions / brigades I'll do too. Picton's 8th for sure (to get the Highlanders in), 1st Div (Guards), 2nd Netherlands (to get some colour other than red in LOL), possibly 2nd KGL Brigade and also 2nd Inf Div / 3rd Brigade (for ranked 95th). Not easy to neatly just pick one division to get everything in but I'm quite happy with a bit of a mix and match as long as each of the battalions are identifiable as something.

Great video, love those buildings and the layout is excellent - geek villain mats are excellent. As I think you’re aware I’m going to use DBN for large battles with 1 base to a battalion and I will mount flags on a small base to fit between the ranks so every base will have standards for a BP type battle I will scale it for a couple of regiments to represent a brigade which I find is a reasonable compromise but I shall wait until I can start laying units on the table. I’ve been printing buildings to 12mm figure scale but footprints of the farms etc are still surprisingly large which will certainly influence how I organise units for the battles. I will be doing Peninsula for certain following the Waterloo project.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Graham. I like your plan, seems a really good way of getting the most out of those stands, they’re certainly flexible, and ‘look enough like a regiment’ by themselves to represent one.

Great video again,love the buildings and finished units,as I'm still only half way through the acw I'm not planning to rush into this just yet,epic,12mm,28mm,40mm and 54mm projects still on the go,I'm considering at this scale to use some acw stuff and the napolionic figures to do enough to do the alamo in this scale using a lot of the French for Mexican line and various acw to get the look of the texans, maybe more John Wayne than accurate,but brings back the days I did it with different airfix figures.

So it looks like we’re landing in the same spot at Waterloo. I want to place my British either side of the Brussels road north of Le Haye Sainte. That’ll give me units from Maitland, Halkett, Ompteda and Bylandt with Kempt and Pack to the west. I think this is the sweet spot because: 1. You get to fight around the iconic Le Hay Sainte (it’s a great value model too) and you can hint at Hougoumont or Papelotte with a few walls at the edge of the table. 2. You can fight D’Erlon, receive Ney and even face the Old Guard. 3. You’re at the centre of the Allied cavalry’s glorious start and crunchy end. 4. You’ll have the advantage (?) of fighting through some of the Prince of Orange’s more interesting tactical choices. 5. You can definitely model Wellington and have him steady the odd square when required. 6. You have a reason to buy the Prussians as they feed into your left flank later in the day. 7. Oh and I get to buy a French starter set plus the Old Guard brigade box to take it to the Allies.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I was thinking, but you’re way further along in your thinking/planning, I may have to pick your brains. You’ve mentioned the area of the battlefield you may be able to cover there, what size table at you planning?

My old club in Stoke on Trent around 1985/6 started using buildings smaller than the model scale. ie. 25mm figures use 20mm buildings. or 20mm figures use 15mm buildings or 15mm figures use 10mm buildings or 10mm figures use 6mm. buildings Now we have an epic scale 12.5mm figures I will try 10mm buildings but 6mm buildings might well be OK. By using smaller scale for buildings then make a base a little larger than the building then chapter

As I am planning on doing a table to use at the club on a 4x6 or could do up to 6x8. So looking forward to seeing if you do a outline of the forces like you did for Victoria. One question about the Geek Villain mats which one would you suggest for La Haye Sainte ? Thanks again for the time you put into making these videos :)
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Aled, I love doing them. I’ll definitely be picking up La Haye Sainte, undecided on the roads, but they do look good, good chance they will be a Sarissa Precision as well. Not sure for the Mat, there’s lots of different ‘mostly grass’ ones, I think I have a summer one, but as the weather was so bad before the battle, then I guess others would work too. I’d say take a browse and pick you’re favourite.

If your ground scale is 1 inch = 20 yards then that is 1 inch = 720 inches so your table which is a map of the battlefield has a scale 1/720th. That’s 10 X smaller than a 20mm figure. Epic figures 12.5mm scale but they take up no more tan a 10mm figure on the ground and the epic buildings are half that scale more or less. Black Powder is scaled at 1 figure = 20men but regiment size doesn’t match that because a 3 base Regiment is 60 figures in 2 ranks that’s 10 : 1 for 600 men so some thought has to be given to scales because if your map/table is one scale and your battalion should be 5 to 600 men then you can defend an area too easily with Too many figures.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Leon, I’ll be giving some thought to this for sure. I won’t be ignoring ground and figure scale completely, I just meant I happy to be flexible, but I agree that I do want it to work as a game as well.
