Stuart this is just amazing. My hope is that newbies to the hobby soon find your videos and realise that these smaller scale figures are actually a joy to behold and at the same time there are simple and effective ways to paint them. Thanks to painters and gamers such as Ken and good self our hobies have great and prosperous futures ahead. :)

100%! It was thanks to Stewart's painting tutorials for the Epic scale Civil War earlier this year that I was able to get my starter set all painted up. This is such a fun scale, and as you said this painting technique is so efficient and effective. It's surprising how fast you can get strips and then whole battalions done and on the tabletop.

Thanks. for flags, I use a pair of tweezers with the dog leg on them, I think they are called surgical tweezers, anyway, they can pinch the flag immediately behind the pole and it tightens the paper flag to the pole.

Thank you, it’s lovely hear the videos are inspiring you to get back into gaming. I use most size 1 & 0, I probably use the 1 for most of it, though a 2 with a good point is great as well. I don’t use the 0 that much, maybe for some very fine parts if the 1 is a little too large.

@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊. I paint with mostly size 2 & 1, occasionally a 0, rarely a 0/2. It’s all about a good point really, so even a larger size brush can deal with the detail of the point is strong enough.

Great video it's got me hooked, just out of interest do you varnish after painting and if so which type gloss,satin,matt ?
@MiniatureRealms Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I try to avoid varnishing as much as possible, as I’ve still not found one that doesn’t effect the colour (and I hate that). I always varnish metal miniatures, often twice, once after base coats, then a thin one after highlights. For plastics I find that in most cases it’s not needed, especially if you handle your models with care and by the base as much as possible. There are some exceptions to this, if a paint like Contrast is used without highlights on top, I tend to do a thin varnish there, as it tends to rub off more than regular paint. Where possible i varnish before paining metallics, as it always dulls the finish.

@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Nick. I mostly use Rosemary and Co Series 33 and Broken Toad Mk3 (when they’re in stock). I tend to use mostly size 1&2 as a good point is more important than size of brush, but also have 0 & 0/3 as well.

Hi Stuart, I've recently picked up the British box and I was wondering if you had any issues priming the models/sprues? I've needed several passes of primer to get it to "Stick". I used Colour Forge matt black primer. I then tried the zenithal highlight using Tamiya flat white and got a weird reaction where the paint seemed to bubble slightly. I didn't wash these models which I thought might be the issue so I washed the remaining sprues but still the primer struggles to adhere.
@MiniatureRealms3 ай бұрын
I personally didn’t, but I primed them with my airbrush. There was some instances of this when they first released, but haven’t heard of any for ages now. I’d get in touch with Warlord and see if they will replace the frames, their customer service is very good, just take lots of pictures of the problem. It may be the set you have has stock relating to the period where people had the problem.
@peezebeuponyou37742 жыл бұрын
You've definitely lifted these figures. Difficult to tell, but did you paint the collars, as these would have been the same colour as the cuffs? The "metal" bit under the shako plate is actually lace and is white for fusilier/grenadier coys and green for lights.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I’ve painted a limited amount on some collars, they’re almost hidden on the sculpts, I was planning on doing them all but it’s hard to tell either way. The light company has green lace, I’ve shown that towards the end of the video I think (as I missed it in P1 of this tutorial), but I’ve not added white for the grenadiers on the video, I have since though. Thank you though, I love this kind of help, it’s quite easy to fix and adjust little bits quite quickly on these models.
@peezebeuponyou37742 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms No problem. I'm reluctant to mention stuff like this as some take it the wrong way. Seems a strange attitude to me- I'd certainly want to know if I was getting something wrong. I have to say, this is the best application of Contrast Paints I've seen on YT. Other examples I've seen have been with 28mm figures- maybe smaller figures is the secret with these paints.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
It’s all about how you say it I guess, and you’ve been perfectly polite and helpful, that comes across as your aim very clearly. Sometimes you get one sentence “X should be Y” type comments, they don’t offend me either, but I can understand why some people don’t like them. Thank you for the kind comments as well, smaller scale definitely takes contrast very well, but I think the zenithal highlight first is key, and I do the same if I use contrast on 28mm models. It’s rare that I use entirely contrast (or almost) on those scales though, more for certain colours and base coats.

I’m disappointed for more than one reason :- 1). The command stand is stuck on the end of a strip of 10 figures. To get it right the 5 command figures should’ve been in the centre of the strip. 2). The flank companies should have been in separate strips of 3 because when the lights are deployed they are under command of a Major or a Senior Captain from the brigade. 3). The grenadiers are often deployed to defend a strongpoint with other grenadier companies from the brigade Hugomont and La Haye Saint. 4). The Nassau regiment deployed their light and grenadier companies in the orchard of Hugomont. When fighting a large battle such as Waterloo is often with several players on each side. To maintain interest everyone needs to have something to do even if you are moving and firing skirmishing in a wood. Sadly all I got was French cavalry (W H Smiths was closed) but it meant buying a £25 box of infantry to see if I could separate the strips to get what I want. Other than that they look great but not for me. I like to control what I put on the table. I have noticed in a lot of Wargames rules they only count the block and not how battalions were built.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leon, yeah I totally understand, I don’t think the abstract approach of the miniatures or the Black Powder rules are probably best suited to what you’d like to play by the sounds of things. Luckily there’s so many different sets out there, what do you prefer to play? I’d agree and caution against buying a £25 box to see if you can cut the strips, they’re not sculpted in way that this is easily done without a lot of green stuff work fixing afterwards - they’re so closely ranked that you’d be re sculpting arms on both figures where the cut was made. I think there’s going to be a free Infantry sprue on Feb Wargames Illustrated, maybe worth a try then, but I wouldn’t risk it.
@leonleese49193 жыл бұрын
The rules that I have are “Rules for Napoleonic Warfare” by Trevor Halsall.4th edition. The figure scale is 20 : 1 ground scale 1” to 20 yards. However I’ve been using them since 1976. There is a fair bit of accounting but as I’ve played solo using a roster sheet for a division with battalions of 600 men (30 figures) but as my new battalion are going to be both 10mm and 28mm figures so I’ll try 10mm first (1” warlord would have been better) I’ll have to play a little more with ground scale probably 2mm = 1yard or pace (30”) for 10mm figures And 1mm = 1yard or pace (30”) for 18mm figures. Once you go below 2 figures per company with a 10 company battalion it might look odd but I can try. I’d like to get it done fairly quickly because at 77 I may start loosing concentration needed. At leat I’m enjoying myself now reading drill manuals or regimental suggestions for AWI, Moore and Dundas. Oddly enough the rules are easy to play, just follow the sequence and the point at which fire is available because this stops disagreement 🤐
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
That’s really interesting, I started with rulesets of that kind when I first played the Napoleonic period in the 90s.
