I think learning from the perspective of a foreigner is useful since i can understand the explanations much better than when native speakers try to explain how to make the sounds. The video was really useful, specially the part about the ending sounds ^^

I teach English and we have a fair amount of non-native speakers teaching. While it is necessary to have exposure to native speakers, this video is a really good example of how someone with my native language (almost! I am from the US), is really helpful in explaining this challenge

Great video again, This gave me the realization that ngh at the beginning of a word is just written that way because some dialects will pronounce it ng and some will pronounce it as nh, right? Also i am still confused because when I see Vietnamees people pronounce words like không it seems like they close their mouth at the end and look like blowing their cheeks, sounds like khôm to me

Chào anh 😊 “Ngh” is completely similar to “Ng” in terms of pronunciation. And with the word “Không” you are correct, we have another rule for pronouncing the combination of “O/Ô/U + NG” 😄

it is similar to Khôm but once u know the difference its pretty hard to miss ;) Basically when u say "Khôm" you wanna push all the air out while for "không" you wanna trap the in in, hence the fish mouth. "Học" and "họp" is the real deal tho.

Ng and Ngh are actually pronounced the same. From my teachers, it's only written as Ngh for aesthetics sake.

I am teaching Vietnamese for a 12 years old American kid. I'd say that I don't use the same explanation to the boy but I found it really helful for me to percive the situaton on the side of an English speaker. I mean, I got "that exact what I said" all the time. I guess, it just like the first day I learn English, I can't tell the different between my "right pronounciation" and the wrong one.

I highly recommend the Vinh dialect. the Hanoi is close, but they get more consonants than you: r is not z; tr is not ch just to name a few.

Again, awesome video!! Thanks guys! I'm curious as to why you say that you "should" learn the Northern accent. Is there some practical reason for doing so, or was that just a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that Tieng Viet Oi focuses on the Northern accent?

Nếu học giọng nam thì Chữ "V" sẽ đọc thành chữ "D" -> Thay vì " Việt Nam" lại thành "Diệt Nam", "Về" -> "Dề" và còn rất nhiều từ bị lái đi khi phát âm (cái này là do thổ ngữ bản địa) làm cho người nước ngoài càng trở nên khó khăn và hoang mang hơn khi học tiếng Việt.
