I have been using tin foil to cover bowls for such a long time (when we have some types of leftovers) and I just never thought of buying bowl covers like that. Just ordered a couple so we dont need tin foil anymore lol, thanks for the inspo!

I'm still going through non-reusable dish sponges that I've had forever, I can't wait to get rid of them so I can use the lovely dish sponges that my mother crocheted for me. They are reusable, washable and sooo cute :)
@andthedragon3 жыл бұрын
I too have made the switch to crocheted scrub cloths. I make them with the scrubby yarn - not the easiest yarn to work with, but not too bad if you use a simple stitch! The change came when I was washing my usual fabric-encased sponges with my kitchen towels one day and I noticed that weren't getting pulled down by the agitator... they were just sitting there, floating above the load. I was horrified!

I say rubber band for the kind that come on veggies. Although for the ones that go in your hair it's hair elastic.

I tried not buying plastic bags. But with little kids and packing lunches, not all my reusable bags made it back home.

Elastic band!! I always save them too from broccoli, spring onions, post, you can get all sizes. I also save bread bag tags to use as labels and the wire tags that come on some stuff.

Ha :), totally agree on the towels and the rubber bands (probably don't count that, I am a non-native speaker^^) I even use hair ties I find on the street that are not quite functional anymore instead of rubber bands. Before I had found a possibility to get a soap bar for dishes package free, I started making my own liquid dish soap. Because I can get grated curd soap package free from a bulk store. I mix that with hot water, some baking soda and then I put in some "flavor": I save orange or citrus peels or take dryed lavender and make a kind of infusion with hot water having let it sit for several days in a closed glass jar.

I have found that rubber/ elastic bands is used differently in different regions of the country. Where I grew up it was elastic bands then I moved to Cincinnati and found it was rubber bands. The sales clerk was really confused when I asked for help finding elastic bands in the store. She took me to the sewing notions section to find the elastic you use for waist bands.

I also reuse the "rubber" bands that come with produce. I use a knife to cut up most every fruit and vegetable so no specialty items for me as well. Love the idea of soap and a brush for dishes. I already use Dr. B's soap so I guess I will just be needing the brush. Thanks for the great video!

Same with the rubber bands. For some reason, our mail will sometimes come with a rubber band around them, so between those and the produce ones I actually have way too many.

I've been wondering for a while where you found your dish-soap bar holder! I like that it has raised edges so the bar won't slide around when using a dish brush or loofa on it. I think you may have had the same one in your bathroom video?

So, I use rubber bands to refer to the office supplies. I don't think I've ever used the phrase elastic bands, but I have heard people call hair ties hair elastics. Guess it depends on where you're from. Kind of like saying pop, soda, cola depending on your region.

Rubber bands. I think of elastic for the hair. 🤔 Garlic press is one thing I DESPISE/LOATHE. I rather just rub up against a zester .. same effect in my book. I do that with my ginger too. (My fingernail biting is decreased afterwards lol)😂 I just hate trying to clean it up afterwards. I use cloth (yarn) washcloths and scrubbies my mom makes .. bottles do get a plastic brush but rare. I have to use gloves because of neuropathy so I can do hot temp. ($1 best ones for me)

As a passionate cook I can tell you garlic in a press is not minced garlic. Some recipes call for minced and some for pressed. It makes a difference. Cooking after all is a science.

I’ve been wanting to ask you for ages now but I get so mesmerised by your videos I always forget 😭😂 Question, are you officially married because you refer to Murphy as your husband. If you are... did you have a minimalist/sustainable wedding? And.... do you have a wedding ring? I noticed you don’t wear one. Thanks for answering 😊😊😊🙏🏻

The one thing I struggle with is using glass containers for school lunches. They are heavy and breakable! We do use fabric wraps, parchment paper, and reusable snack bags, but messy foods don't work with those. Any ideas for kids?

Hey Rebecca! I do the same with rubber/elastic bands! Question about the dish brush. It looks kinda hard. Do you use everywhere? I'm afraid to use it on my non stick pan and plastic cup of my blender..these kind of things..

I’m not a scientist at all, but I believe if your glass Tupperware are Pyrex or borosilicate, I don’t think they’re recyclable. But, glass is inert, so doesn’t cause problems in landfill.

I'm leary of freezing in glass,what is a good guide line,rule for this?I have had a mason jar to break from using in freezer.
@jawbreaker81253 жыл бұрын
Maybe you put too much in the jar? Ideally you should leave some space at the top so whatever you're putting in has room to expand when it freezes. Also you could try to leave the top unscrewed for the same reason and only tighten it when food inside is fully freezed. Final tip: never put glass straight from the freezer into the microwave/oven unless it's something like Pyrex. Let it thaw on the counter for 15-20 minutes and then you can safely put it in.

I wish my Dr. Bronner's bar of soap cost only a few dollars ($3?). I just paid $6.99 for a bar. That's too expensive for me so I actually grate it and add water to make a liquid dish soap that lasts much longer.
@keishamatthews-downing84123 жыл бұрын
What do you use when you are camping over a flame? This is the one time I religiously use tinfoil (and pack it home when I leave).
@sarahthatcher1233 жыл бұрын
I would use an old pot. Unless you're talking about hiking with a pack way into the wilderness ( then I'd buy a special metal camping pot just for that purpose). But if just camping at a site with vehicle or camper a pot. If you're thinking a baked pototo then I'd cook it ahead of time and just heat up in the pot. A cast iron pot ( though heavy) could sit on a grate right over the fire. Just some options...just try ...you can adapt.
@marionnieder16553 жыл бұрын
Can you tell me how many bottles of liquid dish soaps can be replaced by one bar of dish soap? I really thought about buying one a couple of times, but the price always holds me back. One bar costs as much as 10-15 bottles of liquid dish soap.

My husband uses so much aluminum foil to put leftovers in the fridge or cover plates and it drives me crazy 😅. I just see him do it while I stare at the cupboard with the glass Tupperware right beside him...but I choose a happy marriage over trying to force my ideals on him. Just by my example he has adopted some more sustainable changes.

There’s also a footprint from eating non meat substitutes too. It uses a lot more fossil fuels than animal products do. If you buy straight from the farm or a farmers market that’s a different story

I use a stainless steel coffee filter, it works well and takes no space at all. I also keep the rubber bands (in French, we call them "élastiques", so you had it right 😁) from produce. I don't use glass jars because they are too heavy to carry on the bus (now that I work from home, they could become an option) and I usually keep the plastic jars of peanut butter because they are a good size and stack well. And I ditched the garlic press, couldn't use it properly. I buy my garlic pre-minced, in a jar 😬
