This took a lot of courage Kraig. I can highly relate to your search for the ideal “filtered” life. Through divorce, parenting, new relationships, and owning/running a business I’d like to think I’ve made a really intentional go at life. And now this is coming full circle and it feels like I have an inability to connect with people that aren’t aligned with beliefs of my own in turn. This has all been really enlightening and I’ll just leave you with this. Keep up your pursuit. Keep pressing into these introspective and honest thoughts. And it’s ok to cut yourself some slack sometimes.

@@ssaini5028 Well, I wouldn't be able to talk about my weaknesses and mistakes like that in public, so at least for some people it requires 'courage'. He's not a hero for doing it, of course, nevertheless it's inspiring for some people.

SSaini Rescuing a grandma from a house fire is courageous. Opening up to other people, in person or on KZbin, is courageous as well. Most people, most males especially, are afraid to open up and feel vulnerable and talk about feelings. Talking about feelings and rescuing grandmas are clearly completely different actions, they both frighten people, therefore, they’re both courageous.

Well said, and I’d add: keep the introspection, but ultimately, if you realize you’ve lost the ability to connect, then what you need is to add some “extrospection” i.e., direct your energy outward. Reinvest in new relationships, put yourself in situations that require you to compromise for the sake of harmony with others. That is the antidote to a perfectionistic isolationist life.

Personally I love how open you have become and that you are putting yourself out there. More and more I feel myself relating to you and so it's nice to hear what you have to say, never stop that. As a recent wedding filmmaker, and after recently also discovering the minimalist way of living, I can't help thinking you might be inspiring me a little too much though ;). Love your way of life and it's something I am striving for myself so it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Keep up the amazing work dude - the biggest thank you.

I've been following you for a long time Kraig and all I can say I'm grateful for "knowing" you and for what you do. Been married and got divorced not long ago because of me second guessing myself in all I do and choices in my life. I feel lonely but still grateful for what's happening to me because is giving me the light I needed in my thinking process. Maybe we need to do therapy too, I don't know but all I can say is this is a beautiful time for introspection and trying to do what's right. Love from Argentina.

We love a self reflecting influencer! When you said "narcissism" I was like "THANK GOD he realized it!" :) . From a fellow perfectionist minimalist I've had to develop some mindfullness around when I'm obsessively decluttering in order to avoid something I'm overwhelmed by. Say I'm behind at work or something - because I'm a perfectionist I don't think anything less than perfect is going to cut it so if I think something looks too daunting to do perfectly I just avoid it. I've been trying to be KINDER to myself - just TRY. 80% is fine - GOOD even. I concur with other commenters. Don't be too hard on yourself. Anyway when I realize I'm urgently decluttering (or any of my other coping mechanisms), try to pause and figure out what you're actually stressed about. Another tip is to not do anything in the heat of the moment (be it buying something or throwing something away). Whatever it is can wait a week! Good luck Kraig!

Thanks for this, Kraig. Yeah, my story has a lot of similarities, from the aeropress --> espresso machine --> aeropress --> espresso machine routine to full-time travel only to realize that it wasn't filling the void and moving back home (where I now have something like two dozen houseplants and way, way more stuff than I could ever travel with). Realizing that it was time to just pick a place and put down roots took way too long for me, but I'm definitely in a better place for having done so. Sounds like NYC probably isn't that place for you (I realized the same pretty quickly during my two years there before moving out west), so I hope you find a home that feels right. Nowhere will be perfect. Thanks for sharing such a personal story and not glossing over the raw and uncomfortable bits.
@Ψυχήμίασμα
@Ψυχήμίασμα 4 жыл бұрын
I think I put down roots before I grew out of my childhood. yeah, I'm that type.....never saw the need to fill any voids.....I guess I've always treated life as "boy am I glad I'm alive and not in a concentration camp" and I usually go about my day being fine with myself. I do have a manual espresso machine, however, and I grind my own beans. I just enjoy the art itself for its own sake. Could never live in NYC myself. I think my general reaction to the place was a series of "wtf," "really?" "oh, so that's a thing" and "people talk like that in real life." But the things you can't enjoy, you tolerate, and put out of mind. That's minimalist living. Clearing the mind. Nowhere is perfect, which means everywhere is perfect.

The blunt force trauma in this video!!!! Dude, i feel it and im loving the honesty. My pivotal moment was when i took up hiking. Because from there, I worked out as a result to how fit I was getting from hiking in NY/NJ. Which transformed my body, so I started eating healthy, and now i feel really good about myself. That's bled into my work life. I actually create videos now, have a schedule, client calls, and man... I wish there were more hours in a day and that certain things didn't take so long. But... here we are. Minimalist, hiking filmmakers. Maybe that's a stereotype, but I truly believe I'm as happy as I've ever been.

I discovered your video on Picos de Europa a few months ago and it's haunted me with its beauty ever since then. It is an absolute masterpiece and made my boyfriend and I go hike in Picos this summer for the first time (we live only a few hours away from it, in Spain). You've touched people's minds and hearts, Kraig. You might feel alone but you are not. I felt that way a couple years ago and it's taken me so long to understand that I need to embrace the marvellous person I am, and so do you. When you accept yourself as the amazing and imperfect human being you are, everybody else starts seeing it as well. Thanks so much for your work and honesty.

I discovered your channel a few days ago and I already love the kind of content you put out there. Knowing that this difference compared to the usual travel videos could come from something that does not make you fell well is saddening. Already it is obvious how the journeys you show us are way more complicated than what it is filtered to the viewer, due to the amount of physical and mental job behind. Like, you are not on vacation and only have to enjoy the view. But in a sense, this minimalism did something contrary to what you say: you give us at least as we give you as followers through appreciation. I am in a phase of my life also when I am trying to find my balance. I can just say, stay strong, we love what you do, don't just watch the views and likes, it remains special and a gem on KZbin, and focus on what is not going as it should also.

I've been watching you videos for years now and I have always enjoyed you minimalism videos especially your digital minimalism video so much that I have followed in your footsteps and it's so reassuring having everything you need with no distractions. I've noticed over the past years or two that you have been putting out less content and was genuinely concerned but I saw it as you finding yourself when you put out hiking videos that were like 40 minutes long. It's unsettling as a content creator trying to be financially stable especially during this pandemic and I'm so happy to see that you are thriving and I support you 100%. I think what people like is authenticity and that's what i see in every one of your videos. For you to open up about your lifestyle in this video is refreshing and it shows that you care about your audience and we appreciate it greatly! I love your videos and I always reference back to them when I have a question about how you do things that could help with my personal workflow. Keep on keeping on Kraig!

Kraig, I began watching your videos at roughly the same time as this video - early 2017. I loved watching your lifestyle in New York and the aesthetic you presented in your videos. But over time, I slowly stopped paying attention to your content, like so many other creators similar to you. I didn't know it at the time, but I was suffocating myself with aspirational content that told me the story of the life I didn't have. But in the last few months, I have come back to your videos and I am moved by the beauty of your adventures. More than that, admire the honesty you have displayed in this video. Thank you - this video has definitely pointed out some big questions that I have to answer in regards to my own journey with minimalism and narcism.

Keep moving forward Kraig. You do help others by being true and honest. Being authentic is refreshing in social media. I have a KZbin channel, but have not put anything out there for fear of the feedback that it was not good enough. I find joy in creating. I first found you when I was searching out drone videos. You are young and super creative. I went along for the ride on your many hiking videos. I was always blown away by the shots you captured and your editing style on your travels. Keep being true to yourself on the road to discovery. It's the journey... none of us know where it ends. Wish you all the best.

Great thoughts and words, Kraig. You're doing some (simple to you, I'm sure, but not to most people) things that will ultimately prove to have created a more fulfilling life when you look back on it. One, and most important: reflecting in a total, open, honest way. That's the only thing that will allow you to change, or improve, or grow, or whatever you choose to call it. And two: seeing the entire world, every corner, every trail, every height and depth. And even though you film and share the parts that are spent alone, you still interact with people at every step, from airports and planes to rental car counters to hotels to shuttles to people you meet at a hot spring. You're making your own life, with active and purpose and intention, and you are examining it as you do so. I'd say you're doing it right.

Kraig! Firstly, I almost never comment on youtube videos but almost felt obligated here. I've been watching for years, I think around right before your last wedding video? You inspired me to get a camera to begin with. Might have subconsciously helped me cut things out of my life, or explore minimalism more. I will say, I think experiences are definitely meant to be shared. I understand that youtube has been your outlet, but humans have evolved for millions of years to feel the need to be a part of a tribe. There is nothing wrong with that! I'm glad you shared, I'm glad you are evolving and learning, keep doing what you are doing. But evolve, change, and try new things. You are far from a one trick pony. You're beautiful. You make beauty and share it. I often cuddle my daughter as she falls asleep warching your hiking videos. It's a sweet time. Thank you for that. I recently read that happiness is the feeling of the expansion of the self. Makes sense and maybe explains why creatives are often unhappy, bc we are more fine tuned in looking for expression. That's okay. It's not narcissism. Instead of happiness, seek joy which is the feeling of transcending the self. And as you have rightly deduced, this is best done in relationships. Take good care Kraig. Bless you.

Great video Kraig. Im a big fan of the hiking videos. You have been an inspiration for me, in my own adventures. We share minimalism, hiking, introspection, and New York in common. I appreciated this video as an origin story of sorts and one that contributed towards the context of why you do what you do. I also appreciated you showing both sides of your philosophy and lifestyle. That's how life is. Every decision made or path chosen comes with positives and negatives. The social media age has created this general unhealthy filter, where a lot of content providers only present a glamorized view into their lives. While that may provide their audience with a form of escape, I believe the vulnerability you shared here is what really connects with people. My only advice would be to continue to listen to yourself. Your mind and body will give you clues to what it needs. It appears you are already synced into this. I loved your analogy about how weeding is just as important as growing and I believe that analogy could be applied your philosophy at large. Allow those beliefs to continue leading you towards your idea of happiness and being content in life...but be aware, ready, and courageous to pick a few weeds and make adjustments when needed.

You can see how much you've grown and matured through your videos. I think that's why I like them so much, because it's not just about the destination but the journey. Your journey. That's why they're so inspirational. You've touched on the idea for a bit now, but when you're ready for the commitment you should look at bringing a dog into your life. I think it would be very hard to find another creator on KZbin who is as open and honest as you. This video is quite honestly a masterpiece. Firstly the story telling of this video is wonderful I always find myself drawn through your videos and I do not even notice the time go, you truly create a wonderful story that doesn't just rely on nice shots but also great hosting and well put together clips. Secondly your honestly is powerful and refreshing in a world where social media is used to disguise you often use it as the opposite and shine a light on your vulnerabilities. Although I cannot fully relate with everything you are going through I truly emphasis and hearing you talk about your troubles with self; helps me in a strange way feel more comfortable with my own problems. Hard to describe but I think everyone on this earth has issues and the more we are open and honest about that the better we can all feel, knowing we are all just trying our best to navigate the life we were born into. Beautiful video and you are definitely my favorite creator on this platform.

Thank you for your honesty, Kraig. Please know that you're not alone in what you are feeling and struggling with. And don't beat yourself up about the past! Each day is a new opportunity for you to build and live the relationships and life that you want. On a personal note, your hiking videos have been helping me tremendously with my anxiety throughout quarantine. Hiking is one of my favorite activities but I've not been able to do it because our park gets too crowded and makes my anxiety even worse! So your videos have been a balm for my weary soul. Thank you!

I am equal parts wanting to tell you to not be so hard on yourself and also so keep going with your journey being hard on yourself. Even though you may not feel it at the moment, I know that you know deep down that you are proud of yourself and what you have done. Everyone with any self-awareness feels that they could have done something better in their lives, but MAN, the mistakes that you might have made have been for good intentions. You have only meant to be the best person that you thought that you could be; you have inspired a large amount of people to go out and do the important things in life in that they may have been afraid to do. Never stop trying. Keep changing, keep being uncomfortable-- these are growing pains and they are so incredibly important.

I've been watching some of your hiking videos as i'm looking to start getting into big trips and came across your solo hikes... but the last few minutes of THIS video is amazing. Thank you for showing who you are and not hiding behind the persona.

I really appreciate the honesty here. It's refreshing to see people actually and sincerely criticize themselves without any narcissistic agendas. You're flawed just like the rest of us and yet create these hugely inspiring videos of the beauty of nature and solitude. It's somehow comforting to know that someone imperfect can create something as close to perfection like those videos. It's also really fascinating to see your growth (in 16 minutes, this is an awesome edit). It's making me want to do a similar introspective activity for myself too. Thank you for this video, Kraig. Excellent, as always. Hard to imagine I'm now somehow emotionally invested in the life journey of someone from the opposite side of the world but here we are lol

Hi Craig - I was listening to your last podcast and wanted to pass along some thoughts. First - your content is valid and I really look forward to your video tutorial. I am a still photographer in need of a jumpstart into film and what you describe sounds perfect for me. Your videos are some of the closest I have seen to capturing the essence of what hiking offers - and understanding there is likely a large segment of your audience that cannot or will not be able to get out there themselves, the value of what you produce is maybe even more than you think. It is not selfish to do what you are doing - keep evolving it in the direction that pulls you and the authenticity / devoted audience will remain. Lastly - yes - get out of that apartment, go where you think you want to be, and maybe even get that dog. The rest will follow.

Your authenticity and the capability of yours to show this side has amplified my respect for you. Heavily inspired by this transparency of this video. Honestly people think that once a person becomes huge and famous they become invincible but it's not true. They can go through troubled times as well. Thanks for making this video! You helped a lot of people without even knowing. I hope my comment makes you feel great too because you did fabulous 💜

I consider myself to be a Minimalist but I have many things. I've culled and filtered what brings me happiness and value. I think you are right that some of the videos you did about Minimalism were trying to fit what a person in that sphere does. Getting rid of everything is not the goal of Minimalism, but as you mentioned briefly, about filtering what you keep/bring in that makes you happy. I've seen so many people beat themselves up because they are trying to fit this 'Minimalism' mold and struggle. Hopefully you find what works for you.

Found your channel because I've been thinking about streaming my own hikes, and realized that I mostly enjoyed playing my own footage, vs music, while I worked on writing. I decided to see if anyone else already was streaming hikes and doing it better than my videos. Viola! I found yours. You have amazing videos of your hikes. I love the creativity and almost ASMR aspect to them. I found this video, specifically, very relatable. Thank you for creating content :)

Kraig I could write an entire paragraph of how you changed my life and gave me courage to go out and do what I love. But as you said, it doesnt matter that much what we say about the work, it's about YOUR experience on the path, on life, listen, you are not wrong for having these problems! everyone deals with their shit, you certainly didnt choose to feel unhappy about what you do. I sincerely hope you get some help for your problems (maybe therapy? has helped wonders for me), I used to be deep down on the sh*t myself, and talking about these things is definitely a good step into becoming a healthier human being. Love you brother, take care.

I certainly been on this point in life, it's like when a bunch of cables get tangled and you feel tired and annoyed by it, but you just have to untangle each one at the time, one day at a time. I recommend you a book that has changed my entire life, even the way I perceive moment to moment in this world. "The power of now" by Eckhart Tolle

This was great Kraig, I feel like this process of trial and error, self-reflection and ultimately growth is something a lot of people in their late 20's to early 30's have struggled in new and unique ways because of the climate we grew up in. We started life without instant gratification built into our everyday experience, we then rapidly grew to adapt to social media, the internet, mobile phones and during all of that we had to grow as healthily as we could through an ability to have what we wanted when we wanted it during our formative years (those of us who grew up as middle-class 'Westerners' for the most part). I feel many people in our generation have been spending the last 3-5 years working through the challenges of reconciling our narcissistic tendencies. The parts of us that grew through the adoption of social media as a core part of our lived experience. We're now finding that life is always going to be disappointing if we expect continuous growth; of following, of friends, of things we own and so many of us have looked to minimalism as a solution to that problem. I feel many of us have struggled with the idea that sometimes we have to go backwards to go forward. Sometimes the only solution is to become quieter, withdraw into ourselves, into those closest to us and find comfort in the idea that if all we had is our health, love of friends/family, a place in the world and a purpose, that it could be enough. Thanks for sharing so openly. Really looking forward to following your journey into finding your own place and the evolution of your hiking videos. I can't speak for others, but your hiking films are a core part of my life and bring me a great sense of calm and peace when I can't get out on the trails myself during particularly busy times.

Thanks for continuing to share your journey. The timeline of this video reminded me how long I’ve been following you, and I know it’s been since before you hit 10k subs. While you’ve been on some ups and downs, you clearly have self awareness and that will take you a long way in personal growth. I’ve also felt like I’ve burned some bridges or personal connections by neglecting relationships, but not all are lost if you reach out and make the effort to reconnect. You can also take those lessons into future relationships as to not make the same mistakes. You’re young, and you still have countless connections to make, if you’re open to them. Thanks again for making and sharing your videos.
