Happy Potato Week from Copenhagen! 👋🏼😍 Do you decorate for Halloween, and did that change when you became an Empty Nester? I hope to inspire YOU to simplify today! 🎃🍂🍏

I loved your playfulness in this video, Diane! You always manage to bring a smile to my face. We don't decorate for Halloween, but for autumn. We buy a few locally grown, small pumpkins and group them with candlesticks and lanterns that we already have. Sometimes we bring in colourful leaves and rosehips to go along. I also love decorating with apples that we're gifted in abundence from around our neighborhood this time a year. This year I brought several huuuge pinecones home from our local arboretum; they'll join the pumpkins now and in December we'll use them for winter decorations and/or crafts. There's nothing wrong with the gimmicky Halloween stuff, but I really enjoy the look of nature inside! Love from Sweden!

Hi Diane! Fun video! We don't decorate for Halloween but for Autumn. I have leaves and little pumpkins and things like that I put around the house. I used to decorate big but now the kids are all grown, I have two small pumpkins on the shelf. That's it. I wasn't really feeling it this year. What a sweet cat looking cat!

Here in the U.S., we do usually celebrate Halloween. The past several years, I have not put out any decorations. I now have custody of my 12 year old nephew and so this year we do have decorations up they are minimal, but it feels festive I really am a fan of going through holiday decorations and decluttering it down to what I really enjoy using. Happy hygge haunting! 👻

I started watching your videos when your channel first began because I was interested in learning more about Danish culture. Now I have circled back for the fly lady content as a mother of seven children just trying to keep her head above water. Last week I put my foot down and said "enough is enough, I am too old to not live in a home that isn't exactly the way I want it to be." Llast Monday I began practicing my morning and evening routines and did violence to each room in my home so it would start functioning as intended. Things were so bad I was clocking 9 hour days on my feet, constantly on the move and tackling every " I'll get around to it" pile and project so my home and the children in it can flourish rather than live in survival mode. I am exhausted, but I can at the very least relax and rest in a tidy home now. It is not totally done, but I am establishing new habits and chipping away at the tasks in the small bites fly lady teaches, and making sure I take care of myself in the meantime. Trying really hard to avoid burnout- I feel it coming! Wishing you a warm uhyggelit season, and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

We just went through Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton (direct hit) and the house sustained no damage. Just debris in the yard, and a couple more palm trees down. Needless to say, I cheered myself up by putting up our Christmas tree! I'm skipping Autumn! Love your videos. I love old-fashioned decorations for Halloween with turnips, candles, apple bobbing/toffee apples, bin liner/make up/graduation gown costumes & the odd prop that makes me giggle/feel dramatic (like a “wand”, Yoric & the hand). Most things have normal uses during the rest of the year but get combined/tweaked around this time to somehow look spooky. I watch fantasy & children’s spooky films, & read something seasonal (Dracula this year). I like to combine Halloween, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Sunday into one big autumnal festival to properly say goodbye to the light & switch to cosy mode for winter. Those clementines are a fab’ idea and Potato Week reminds me of how my parents still always call October half term ‘tatey picking week. I live with my parents but I’m the adult child who almost made them empty nesters & I’m also the “decluttering manager” but we still celebrate things in a child-like way because it makes us smile.

I love your red berries in the white vase behind you. Natural and so cheerful. Thank you for also lighting candles for our coffee break today. I like to put out a pretty platter to display acorn squash, butternut squash, a baking pumpkin and apples as my autumn kitchen decoration. I might tuck in some fabric "autumn leaves". And I eat all of the produce. Every autumn I make a chili and bake it in the pumpkin shell. The aroma is fantastic. Must have it with hot apple cider. Yum. The produce display changes to oranges and walnuts on December 1. My only Halloween decor is 3 ceramic ghost tea light holders. And some seasonal tea towels with leaves and pumpkins but not jack-o'-lantern. I don't pay much attention to Halloween except for giving out some treats. This year I ordered Carmel apples. This week, I am decluttering summer clothes that I did not wear. Next week I hope to start decluttering Christmas stuff. It's finally consistently cool here in Chicago. Today after my lol, I plan to wash all the parts of my window air conditioner and put them away. That's always a dusty job that warrants wearing old clothes. Time marches on and I love the seasonal changes. It's the best time of year for walking outside. And it's a pretty sunny day today. 🍁🌞🍁🌞🍁🌞🍁🌞🍁🌞🍁🌞 🧺🍁🧺🍁🧺🍁🧺🍁🧺🍁🧺🍁

What a fun video Diane, loved your spooky sounds effects 😊 Here in the UK Halloween/autumn decor has definitely become a bigger market in recent years. The shops begin selling stuff at the end of summer hols. It can be tempting to pick up stuff , aside from one leafy garland (bought to save on mess from real leaves) I did not succumb to the temptation. I have used the same Halloween decor from 8 years ago. The rule is it must all fit in one small container. I have been collecting leaves to press and branches from outside this year and we have a couple of real pumpkins. I have also been playing some music that gives me the Halloween/autumnal feeling. Decorating from the outside is what I have been trying to do, glad you mention it. I will also aim for similar at Xmas. Enjoy the season X

Wow! It must feel good to let all that go! Halloween is HUGE here in the Midwest of the US and some people decorate more for Halloween than for Christmas. My neighborhood is full of scary monsters, ghosts and goblins. I decorate more for fall than Halloween, and not really very much at all, mostly with small ceramic pumpkins I bought in the 80s and 90s. For Halloween I have 2 small ceramic ghosts and a couple of black cats and we have a pumpkin that lights up for outside and that's it for me. It's all very old school but they are sentimental items that I enjoy getting out once a year. I decluttered the majority of my fall and Halloween décor a few years ago and have never regretted it.

I am SO enjoying my Halloween decorations and they are helping me with the transition from summer into a colder, darker season, but I am more selective with my Halloween activities and the movies I watch. You are on such a roll with your decluttering! And flinging open the doors and windows whenever the sun shines!

Great encouragement, thanks! If I only have one box or bin of something, I tend to think that I can just keep it, even if it contains some stuff I don't really use anymore. But if I ask myself if I were moving, wouldn't I rather move just the one small box, rather than the big heavier one? Absolutely! I'm going to be more ruthless letting go of unused stuff, even if I have room for it. I know the day will come when DH and I will have to move to a smaller place, and someday after that the kids will have to go through our stuff and deal with it. I've been in Swedish Death Cleaning mode for two years now, but you've encouraged me to go further than I have. Thanks again!

Halloween is becoming more of a thing here in Australia, which is funny as it's Spring here. So spooky decorations in a flowery spring garden, costumes on a 26c afternoon and sunset at 7.30pm. 😂 So trick and treating in broad daylight and half melting in the costume. Its largely an excuse for student's boozy costume parties.😊

I grew up in NZ and could never understand the seasonal symbolism of Easter and Halloween because they were in the wrong seasons!
@katv1195Ай бұрын
@olivemaycards yes! Easter with Spring symbolism and feral-animals (rabbits) in mid Autumn/Fall. People from the Northern Hemisphere look at bit strangely at me when I tell them our favourite Easter meal is hot soup and hot cross buns, and chocolate native animals (Bilbies). Almost no Easter egg hunts as the kids know the eggs will be in the one or two plant that havdn't lost their leaves 😀 yes, the most relevant thing about Easter is the public holidays. And don't get me started on Winter Wonderland Christmas decorations in malls in a hot Australian summer 😀
@katv1195Ай бұрын
@olivemaycards P.S. I think the mixed up seasons to the various European traditions is a part of what give New Zealanders and Australians the ability to light heartedly challenge how something "should" be done. That and our attachment to the sea - no one adapts like a sailor

Looking forward to Kiko's visit, such a cutie. I don't decorate for Halloween, never have. I like the idea of bringing the outdoors inside using natural items that are environmentally friendly. In this area there are a lot of these huge blowup things on the lawns, more often than not they are just lying on the ground, eventually they will end up in a landfill somewhere, definitely not good for the environment . I saw a news item that black plastic kitchen utensils contained toxic material and to get rid of them, so I declutterd what I had. Also plastic cutting boards that were scratched, I had a green one for vegetables, a red one for meat and an orange one for bread, they were scratched so they are gone , so I am now using a wooden one for vegetables and another wooden one for bread, however I don't know what to use for meat as I am hesitant to use a wooden one for raw meat and poultry . I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me. Also, decluttered 2 scratched cookie sheets. Another item in the news said that air fryers that are non-stick are also a problem unless they are stainless steel or ceramic they are not safe . Apparently anything that is coated with nonstick material is a health problem. I don't understand how manufacturers can produce items that are harmful to your health. Teflon isn't used any more but they use other materials that are just as toxic.

Here in Maine in the United States our high school students still have “potato week” but we call it harvest and they have 2 - 3 weeks off to help.

I'm in the northern US, and we have four seasons too, which I love. For our family, it also means watching football season. I liked the idea of making the oranges into pumpkin faces! We're still doing pumpkin patches with our kids but try to get the pumpkins to local animal sanctuaries after Halloween for their goats etc
