Hey Starsky, great video. Quick tip, if you hold another finger on an empty front panel area or on the wood while tweaking a knob, the app switches to fine mode. This makes it a lot easier to dial in precise settings.

Considering the price difference and how close the app gets to a physical mini moog is just crazy! It’ll be extremely hard to tell the difference in a song when you have other instruments playing all at the same time (: But then again who wouldn’t want a physical unit? Lol. it’s more inspiring and human

I imagine if I had a Minimoog I would love the app as a guide. Think about it. You have a preset manager of sorts with previews of all the sounds. Yea some will be different, but you can tweak by ear. Part of the difficulty with old synths to me is never remembering what the sounds I like are.

I wonder if you could eq the Moog app a little to get it closer 🤔 I mentioned in the Boog video I had two original D's from 1978-1988, and the two of them sounded a smidge different .. one was 'brighter' than the other .. but I could add a smidge of eq in my mixer and get em pretty close. Anyway another good video .. and remember that app is polyphonic! If someone had come to me in my Minimoog days with an iPad with this app on it and said 'I'll trade you straight across for your Minimoog' I would have done it in a split second! 😁

Sooo close! Gotta give credit to Moog. Their software is strong like their hardware! In a mix, 9 out of 10 folks wouldn't know the difference. Plus some good compression etc., and in a song good luck hearing the difference. The filter section of the app is so impressive...nearly identical to identical.

The Arturia audio playback issue could have to do with the audio pass thru settings on the different apps. Turning it off (or toggling on and off) sometimes clears it I've found on my old iPad Air 2. My new gen Pro iPad has the issue less often.

At first I thought the moog app sounded like crap (delay on every patch) and every patch sounded the same, but it was actually also triggering another app in the background the whole time. For some strange reason MIDI out is enabled by default on the Moog app. You have to go into the settings and turn off 'output - send midi' on the midi tab.

Thanks for this! my Arturia Mini V3 from my V-Collection V drifts out of tune as well. It's very strange. I recorded a tune in ProTools and the more times I play it back the more out of tune it gets. I close the file and reopen and it's in tune again for almost one playback. I gave up eventually as I asked about it at the Arturia help forum and never received a response. I ended up duplicating the patch on my Moog Sub37TE and used it. I've never tried the Mini V3 again but I will at some point (there was an update) as I liked it fine for the cost which came out to about $25.00 because I bought the V-Collection V for half price at $250.00. Thanks again for what you do, Starsky.

Nice video; thank you. I've watched a few of these and it seems clear that Moog missed something with the app. It just doesn't have the muiscality of the real thing. It's missing the secret sauce. I wonder if running it through an amp would help....
@wrmusic87366 жыл бұрын
As usual - when filter gets engaged is when the software loses. But it's not just the real thing's filter that sounds superior, after all it just gets rid of harmonics and frequencies and the rest are still produced by oscillators - which sound more full.
@sibbyeskie2 жыл бұрын
Did some analysis, on top of the ear test, and the analog Minimoog definitely sounds a lot nicer. The bass comes out considerably more smooth and present despite not taking up any more headroom (you can actually see clear natural compression occurring on the analog vs iPad). Also the top end is never harsh. The iPad comes through with a lot of harsh overtones. Those details are the kinds of things make mix engineers have to reach for EQ, compression and all sorts of tricks just to get to how they would prefer. And despite average people saying they don't notice these things, they very much do in aggregate. It's like anything else that involves fine detail. Consciously, people aren't aware, but those details add up and can make a piece go from a subconscious sense of "good" to "perfect." I don't actually own any analog gear at the moment, so I'm not just some fetishist. Bottom line is just about any sound coming out of analog gear will sound great right away and be inspiring enough to make a good mix.
@XanderEwald Жыл бұрын
Did some music, on top of ear test, and the app did just fine ;) Seriously, these are instruments that are meant to be played, be it the analogue hardware or it’s software equivalent. Nobody can keep you from nerding out and hyperfocusing on finest sonic details (I do so too regularly), but keep in mind that for 99% of people who use these things as intended, it absolutely doesn’t matter.

Brilliant comparison. I've been waiting for this. I'm also very impressed by the app. Moog makes great software as well. Great thing this app. Do you think it´s better than The Legend. But yes that overdrive isn´t in any of these emulations (not that you could use it without peaking over to hell in a track).
@StarskyCarr6 жыл бұрын
I think the filter section is the best I’ve heard on any app/plug-in. It really behaves like the hardware and sounds so close. I don’t think the resonance goes quite as high and maybe the filter doesn’t open as much as the hardware (possibly a reason for less harmonics at the top end of the frequency spectrum). But that’s as far as I’d test tbh - it has the right feel and sounds so good it gets a big tick.
@cinebient53436 жыл бұрын
Thank´s and i agree. I compared it to all the plug-ins and it is the best to my taste. Only P900 is still better for me (but it´s a modular). I even find the feedback really good on this app and it really pronounce sounds, especially at the low end if you gain stage it to the max. It´s from all these emulations the most musical feedback if that makes sense. I´m impressed and hope they do a VST/AU some day since it feels a bit lost on my iPhone. Thank´s for your great videos.

@0:50 The Arturia iProphet did the same thing to me this week. I plugged an Arturia MiniLab 3 (midi controller) into my iPad and just tapped the keys before I opened as app, AND SOMETHING WAS PLAYING! I swiped dwon from the top right corner to get the Control Center to see what was playing, and it didn't know. There was no active app for music listed. So, I started going through apps one by one, not really knowing how I'd find which one was the cultprit. GarageBand, Sunrizer, Moog Model D all played different sounds when I pressed their on-screen keyboards. Finally Arturia's iProphet was a match. There is no OFF button, though, so I had to swipe up slowly from the bottom to see all my running apps, and then I swiped up on iProphet, force-closing it, and finally closing this weird, still-5-year-later bug.
