In yet another beautiful studio room at the Funkhaus in Berlin, we saw a preview of the Model 15 - a lovingly emulated Moog System 15 modular modeled on iOS - sounded pretty tasty - Geert Bevin takes us through it

I love these premium apps, even when they're premium-priced. Something that I love about iOS is that independent developers can create beautiful, usable, great-sounding apps -- many of which with unique design concepts -- and put them out into any price-range. For the big boys like KORG, Moog, etc., it'd be very easy to capitalize on their brand-name and put out simple apps at relatively high prices, but when they actually use their resources to create something that sets them apart from independent projects -- that's really great, I think, and fills an important niche in the mobile software market.

Once more, instead of innovating on the modular interface they decided it's a good idea to use patch cables.
@CaalamusTube8 жыл бұрын
+aceyage A lot of people really like cables. It's a big part of the workflow. Ever notice how the VCS Pin Matrix isn't really a thing anymore... yet cables still are? Besides, this was a deliberate recreation of a specific Instrument... which would've really missed the mark, nostalgia-wise... sans Patch Cables! What would've been your alternate solution?
@lemonslice22338 жыл бұрын
+Caalamus Something "innovative", whatever that is. Seriously what else can you do besides drop down menus which are nowhere near as cool or visual.
@CaalamusTube8 жыл бұрын
LemonSlice Reinvent the EMS Battleship idea? Put a pot under every feature... which corresponds to a pushbutton assignment matrix. The pot controls amount... like FXSpansion... but this wouldn't do a Modular like this justice, really :[ I don't know. Although his presentation was confrontational & negative... I actually wasn't mocking him. I was genuinely interested to see if he had any ideas :]

There's a reason a lot of more 'pro' audio apps don't appear on Android...only a few Android devices have the ability to do it w/o severe lag issues. That, and iOS users are generally more willing to pay for apps than Android device users. If they made it for Android and limited it to the most recent versions of Android and had a disclaimer that only half a dozen or so devices handled it well, they'd just end up with a lot of complaints from Android users saying it sucks because it doesn't work well on their device, oblivious to the fact that it's their device's problem.

I bought it. It is good ok.. But.. If you close your eyes and just imagine that these sounds are being produced from an $0.99 app instead of an $40 moog like UI, you probably feel that you hear sounds that could be created by any other AppSynth. I don't want to say that all the Apps sound the same, just that a lot of the Apps do not sound so great as they advertise. It is just our brain that lets say "synchronize" visual with the "great moog audio" expectation. Its something like a placebo. So for me the moogs 15 app UI is great and educational for sure, in the other hand the sounds are compressed and flat and i don't think that its worth the price for the sounds only. Bloody marketing.. :)
@slakk50937 жыл бұрын
It's most likely the headphone DAC on the ipad, have you listened through a high-end soundcard like a focusrite interface?
@zambination117 жыл бұрын
I really don't know sorry. I exclusively use an Apogee quartet with the iPads for the last two years, which has the quite exceptional sabre 32 DAC, powering a pair of DT-1770 headphones in most cases.

I support Apple in everything, and will always do but I am sad there is the planned obsolescence strategy being used. And maybe ios apps developers are threatened to bind to the planned obsolescence strategy orherwise no app for them.
@renascence2397 жыл бұрын
Dunno if planned obsolence or not, but the Moog says it needs 64 bit device to run it because of Metal graphics engine. So, it is sad that this amazing synth doesn't work on older devices (not my problem, but I still feel for people who cannot use it). Now if you want blatant example of planned obsolescence, there is an update for GarageBand with integrated Alchemy. It runs only on iPad Air 2 and newer, and old standalone Alchemy app works like a charm on my iPad Air. Disgraceful move by Apple.

What's the point of this IOS crap? Any pros out there working on the IOS platform? I work on a mac pro tower and pro tools in a proper studio. I can't think of anything worse around me than phones and pseudo-computer based devices. VST format is tolerable but now we need to accommodate more software formats? This platform doesn't even make sense. It hasn't the potential of a fully blown computer in a sense that it hasn't the processing power so you end up having to compromise on the emulation quality. One selling point for VSTs was the platform. It's powerful and usually cutting edge so some of the downsides can be excused but the IOS can't offer this feature.
@TheSteveSteele7 жыл бұрын
rudiger I am. The iPad Pro is very powerful. There are a LOT of great iOS music apps (synths, notation, DAWs, etc..), and the iPad connects digitally to my farm of Mac Pros. The iPad Pro is more powerful than you might think. The A9x CPU is about as powerful as a recent generation i5. One could say it's the music industry that has the best iOS apps. I use Cubasis for my DAW, Notion for notation, AudioBus and a too many synths to mention, but stuff from Moog, Aurturia, Waldorf, Korg, and many more. Plus gestures on iOS based synths allow for completely new music making devices.
@Screaming-Trees7 жыл бұрын
It's very tempting I'll admit. The form factor and the touch interface make it very attractive. Especially if one is use to hands on control. Not the same as a knob/slider but pretty good. There are some big downsides though. If not the processing power then it's the whole redundancy thing (how many devices does one keep around). Another problem is, and this one is a killer, asset renewal cycles. Apple would have you buy a new one of these every year. My mac pro has been around for 7 years now and it won't die any time soon. In contrast I've burned through several iphones in the last 3 years. The build quality of most of these Apple devices is still questionable. It would seem that Apple's strategy here is to treat these as disposable units. My Neve 1073s are decades old. My retro STA will go on and on. My mac pro has had a long life already and fingers crossed will carry on. Even my macbook pro has clocked in 4 years now (it's a late 2013 so not quite 4 years I guess but getting on). Are you going to keep replacing these ipads every year? It's a pretty high annual cost. I just think it's a risky platform in a professional setting that's all (for the reasons I've outlined above).
@harmannsmith56536 жыл бұрын
i dont like DAW approach for ios apps. treat them more like standalone synths and drum machines.
