Video was very informative and helped me gain the confidence to pull the lower unit apart. Like any video I guess, I think it could have added more info, but it had enough to help my troubleshooting mind understand how it is supposed to work and hence figure it out. He talked about testing the armature for continuity which is good as it confirmed mine was fine. He also mentioned looking at the brushes for wear, but someone who has never had a motor apart to know what a worn brush looks like, I could not confirm. He also spoke about making sure the brushes make contact with the armature, so this is when I started trying to manipulate my brushes with my fingers and one would not move. Upon pulling it out I found it somehow melted a hint and "welded" the brush to the brush plate. I could likely just have cleaned it up and it likely would have worked, but since my motor is over 10 years old and don't want it to fail at a critical moment, I decided to "rebuild" it buying new brushes, brush plate and springs. I had to order the seals anyway, and this totals about $30, so I just ordered them per the parts diagram for my motor on Minn Kota's website. Support really was not helpful other than confirming that my tracing of this by testing voltage at every level between battery all the way to brushes was appropriate, and to look for water. Between this video, and other videos allowing me to understand the path, I was able to do this myself and now know more about these motors than I ever cared to learn.

👍 I'm going to be doing the same. I feel I can do it after watching this video but do not have the handy brush spreader tool... But I should be able to improvise.

How much of that nose cone is solid? If I needed to trim 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch off of the nose is that possible? Or is the nose hollow all the way to the end?

when I disassembled my used motor, there seemed to be a significant amount of grease. do I need to reapply or was this possibly added by the previous owner?

During disassembly, I had a smaller lower unit seal paper bore fall out and I ca not find where it goes…. Any idea???
@whitetrashgarage8110Ай бұрын
That's called the "brush retainer". It's used during assembly to hold the brushes back so the armature can easily be installed. It confused me as well, but that is literally all its for. As the armature gets pushed in, the paper ring is pushed out of the way and allows the brushes to spring in to place.

@@whitetrashgarage8110 Thank you sir. Much appreciated. I was close to losing my mind on where it went.
