To be honest yeah that is the big difference in my opinion they are not fighting for their own sake, they are fighting because the Fire Nation attacked their nations and killed their people, and they are not even fighting to eradicate the Fire Nation they just want to bring things to how they used to be before the war began, and to end the bloodshed and suffering as fast and as simply as possible, I think that at the end of the day it is a good cause, but to the Owl spirit it doesn't matter, to him it is just humans fighting humans and one side trying to abuse the knowledge of is library to beat each other.

I wouldn't call her a major character in terms of HxH itself though, not in the slightest. She's had a very large role to play for sure, but if you take literally every other arc into context with her specific arc, she's pretty irrelevant. You can have important minor characters, not everyone is destined to be immediate throwaways. Wing is super important but ultimately he's more or less only relevant during the Heavens Arena arc.

Myla from Hollow Knight only has a few lines spread throughout the game but her story arc is a really powerful message about what greed can do to a person. The Nailsmith is another minor character with a very deep message. God I love Hollow Knight’s characters.

I would argue Hollow Knight is a Mastercraft at this. Aside from like, Hornet, Quirrel and Zote, most of the characters in the game have maybe a dozen lines of dialogue, some of it very contextual so you might miss it. But every character in the game is memorable for one reason or another.

i love these types of characters, i started really appreaciating them in the Dark Souls series, there are a bunch of minor characters with potent if obscure archs. The catarina knight from dark souls 1 is one of them, hes on a quest like you but you if you dont save him in all the places where is gets in trouble he dies, everytime you save him he loses confidence on himself and even tries to sacrifice himself to try and regain his confidence but if you dont want him to die you take that away from him too and he goes hollow, and so his daughter, who came looking for him to tell him her mothers dying words has to kill him, and so he dies in ash lake one of the most beautiful places in all of soulsborne. There is also Leonard, kirk, solaire, big hat logan and lautrec all of which have thir own tragedies. But definetly the best is the cut arch for Oscar, that guy that dies within the first 5 minutes of the game. You were suposed to leave the asylum with him and he makes it to the end of the game, he is desperate to feel important, to be the chosen undead, but you beat him in every objective and even kill gwyn before him, and so he opposes you in whatever ending you pick saying whatever justifies his vengeance to himself and tries to kill you, and yet you kill him too, his life only served to give you a chance to do what he wanted to do and was a failure when it came to everything else. Vaatividya makes great lore videos for most of these.

Main character are usually the windows into this world that we learn to relate ourselves to for better or for worse. I think this opens up minor characters to have more creative or extreme personalities that steal the scenes that they are in. They don't have to have that longevity of the leads, they can just be entertaining for short periods. The cabbage vendor for example is one of the most iconic Avatar characters who steals every scene they are in but it's because of their scarcity that makes them lovable. The Avatar writers are great so I wouldn't say an entire episode lead by the cabbage vendor would be unwatchable, but it for side or minor characters it's better to leave the viewer thinking "I hope we see that character again" than "oh god this character again".

Agreed, Kamugi was a brilliantly crafted character for a brilliantly executed manga and anime. Those 148 episodes go fast, then you’re stuck in a “show-hole” where you search and search for something as fulfilling to watch but nothing fills that void. Be wary of masterpieces... oh, the emptiness...Then you just find joy in watching other people’s reactions to their first time watching Gon try to do math, Killua ripping out a heart, discovering Kurapika is actually a dude and the king lose to a little blind, board- game ninja. Sigh....

Okay I strongly disagree with Komugi being a 'minor character'. She's pretty much the driving force behind all of Meruem's character development and half of what happens in the 2nd half of the Chimera Ant arc is centered around her. Pouf trying to kill her, Killua trying to keep her from dying to use as a hostage, Gon actually looking like a villain while Pitou tries to heal her and is totally vulnerable. Minor characters are defined by not getting much screentime and not having their own subplots, and Komugi not only has both a bunch of screen time and her own subplot but she's also a major focal point of the main plot of the arc as well as a bunch of other character's subplots. Minor characters can be removed without much changing, like the dude you first listed who just gets eaten at the end of the episode. If you remove Komugi, the entire arc falls apart or is just completely different. ...Also when I watch the end of that arc i cri evrytiem. Oh and I really enjoyed the video despite my point of contention lol. Thanks :D

Minerva was one of my favorites in TWDG, looking back. I remember screaming when she let out that roar, "Clementine!" I swear, I could feel the pain from her, and it was a blend of horror, sadness, and pure insanity every time she started losing it. She was kind of boring at the start but seeing her story revealed and her descent made her surprisingly memorable. It shows what kind of monsters can be born in a zombie world. Seeing her on the thumbnail made me click.

The one and only counter to the owl guy from avatar is the fact that the fire nation committed genocide on the air nomads and they were planning on doing the same exact thing on the earth kingdom. Not only did they genocide once, they were going to geocide AGAIN on an entirely different scale. Once one side has put genocide on the table, being against them pretty much puts you firmly on the right side of the war. However I doubt the owl guy knew that.

There is an episode on the 2006 TMNT cartoon. Its spinoff and filler but it was amazing. Dontatello goes to check up on a tenant at April's building. And he finds the man there drawing and LITERALLY TURNING HIS DRAWING INTO REALITY. This charcter is based on the late Jack Kirby. A revolutionary cartoonist and all around badass. Kirby and Donatello end up going through a portal and finding a world filled with every drawing Kirby has made. This includes the villains aswell as the heros. So they end up having to help the heros because they are getting their ass's beat. But they defeat the villains with the power of kirby's amazing imagination and his drawing skill. But oh no the portal to the real world is closing and they have to run to get through it, but there isnt enough time to do this so kirby sacrifices himself to push donatello through the portal. But when he was pushing him he put a note on donatello saying that he should believe in himself and keep on imaging greater machines. Soooooo basically this episode was just so they could mourne the loss of Jack Kirby. Which let me remind you was at this point a little of ten years dead.

I don't exactly count Komugi as a side character, because she is vital to the second half of Chimera Ant Arc, with the obvious being Meruem's character development, but the second being Gon's downfall as a happy go lucky/good boy character personality. Had it been Gon from the previous arcs, he would have ditched Pitou who was visibly healing Komugi from a previous attack, but in this arc, Gon was so close to intervening with the healing process had Pitou not break her own arm and Killua telling him to wait. Also, the ending where Meruem was so close to killing two other side characters but lets them go because of Komugi's influence, besides literally scaring all the fur off one of the characters because of his jokes.

one of my favorite moments of a minor character is from haikyuu season 2 where some of the date team are talking and you see the super tall one walk by hinata and there is a break in the window where the sun doesn't shine.
