I agree that it is a gem, but cannot help but believe it is derivative of the 1958 film "It, the Terror from Beyond Space." It's a low budget film with cheesy special effects, but the plot is remarkably similar, down to the demise of the creature. BTW, another film may have used "Alien" outtakes, including the giant pyramid and a scene showing how Captain Dallas may have been unable to see the creature that was being tracked to his location (it was sliding along under a catwalk). Look for "Galaxy of Terror" (1981).

It is. It was amazing to see this movie when i was a kid, teenager, then, in my 20's, 30's, and it still is an incredible movie well into my 40's. Better than most science fiction movies released today. It's the movie that you want to see and re-see, and that first time you saw it... ah, the first time was just out of this world, of feeling amazed by it. Talk about a well made movie... with such and incredible, perfect, production design, script, casting, the soundtrack is extraordinary and remarkable; but there's more, the editing, cinematography, photography... every professional that worked on Alien was a master at it's craft. It's a perfect movie in every level.

Same here. I was ten, at the time, and never got to see it on the big screen until its 45th anniversary showing. I was hoping it was the Director's Cut, but was happy nonetheless to finally get to see it where it belonged after waiting 45 years. (Even though I knew the film shot for shot, having watched it on everything from HBO to ABC to VHS to blu-ray, my eyes darted all over the screen, taking in as much detail as I could. The Nostromo and the Alien looked gorgeous on the big screen) Only about 5 people at the showing I caught, but, it was the first showing of the first day of its rerelease. Kinda glad, in a way. because it seems that movie theaters, lately, play their movies at a much lower volume. Glad I knew most of the dialogue by heart, because if this had been the very first time ever seeing the film at all, I wouldn't have heard three quarters of what they were saying.

Alien's Nest and fate of Dallas and Brett - new scenes that deepens the drama (slapped Ripley!) - hearing the signal - Ash being one of the crew instead of a couple of weeks
@mnomadvfx6 ай бұрын
#1. It isn't the best edit - it breaks the tensions COMPLETELY near the end when she is supposed to be literally running to avoid being blown up by the reactor explosion, and she stops to stare at cocooned Dallas and burn him as if she has all the time in the world rather than literally less than 10 minutes before kablooey. This part was cut from the film BECAUSE it's not necessary, and breaks the flow the of the film. People only gush over it because it fits into Aliens which was only plagiarising that unused scene of Alien anyway. #2. It's not even the directors cut - the theatrical cut released in 1979 is the only directors cut. The film was not squeezed for runtime by the studio, Ridley Scott cut the edit exactly how he wanted it to be, right down to throwing out a significant amount of Jerry Goldsmith's original score.

Sort of. The original book and the scene filmed (and added into the special edition) actually shows Dallas cocooned and his body beginning to mold into an egg shape, and an egg just like the ones from the Alien ship (supposedly Brett having transformed into an egg). This would allow an alien to reproduce without needing another alien or another egg from the derelict ship. It also shows why the alien captured Dallas and Brett instead of just killing them.

@mnomadvfx6 ай бұрын
Oh 1000% he did. Point of fact (and this is going to blow your mind) he actually used ALL of Alien to write Aliens. People love to gush over Aliens, but in reality it's just a soft remake that changes the major genre to action instead of horror. Just like with Terminator he switches from a slasher in the first film to an action trip for the second. Seriously guys - break down the plot of Aliens into its bare essentials and you will find that most of the major plot points are just Alien rejigged with different characters. A quick rundown I posted on another video: Aliens = Alien #1. Newt = Jones the cat. #1a. Initial Newt scene is like an alien on the movement sensor = Initial movement sensor sweep of alien finds Jones. #1b. Ripley endangers Hicks and Bishop to go look for Newt = Ripley endangers Lambert and Parker to go look for Jones. #2. Hudson = Lambert. #3. Burke = Ash. #4. Atmosphere processor reactor = Nostromo engine reactor. #5. Derelict space ship in Aliens special edition cut = derelict space ship in Alien. #6. Message from Burke to LV-426 = Message from The Company to Ash. #7. Stowaway alien queen on drop ship 2 = stowaway alien on Nostromo life pod. #8. Final fight with alien queen ending with ejecting into space = final fight with alien ending with ejecting into space. #9. Hicks basically = Parker without passive aggressiveness masking his attraction to Ripley. #10. Team commander Gorman dies in an air duct = Nostromo captain Dallas dies in an air duct (in the theatrical cut). There is a scene which is even more egregious than those above, because it not only lifts the same visual/plot elements, but also lifts Jerry Goldsmith's score cue titled "The Recovery" wholesale from the Alien soundtrack as the background music for this scene in both cuts of Aliens. The scene in question is when Ripley and Newt are making their way out of the atmosphere processor waiting for the elevator to arrive just prior to its explosion, and the xenomorph queen pokes its head around the corner. At the exact moment the xenomorph queen appears the Goldsmith score cue plays. In Alien the score cue plays when Ripley is on the way to the life pod/shuttle with Jones in tow before the Nostromo engine explodes, and the xenomorph appears causing Ripley to drop Jones and run back to the engine control room. For time reference (H:M:S) the scenes in question happen at '01:37:24' in Alien Theatrical Cut, and at '02:18:35' in the Aliens Directors/Extended/Special Edition Cut.
@georgeheilman8857 ай бұрын
It's a pity they had to drop the scene before Ripley discovers the truth, where they almost trap the Alien in the airlock only to be thwarted by Ash. Still, the pacing of the final film and the balance of build-up and tension is masterful.

At least we have the DLC *"ALIEN* *Isolation: Crew Expendable"* where Ellen Ripley, Dennis Parker, or Captain Arthur Dallas try to lure "Kane's Son" into a airlock, but something goes wrong and the lone alien gets away, knocking out the playable character. And after the character regains conciousness, we see Science Officer Ash apologized for the plan not working.

This is one of those "core memory" movies for me. There were a few movies, including Highlander and A New Hope where my Dad said "Sit down, watch this, you'll like it." and those movies transformed me into the nerd I am today. The odd thing about Alien is that Dad wasn't ever into horror movies, that was Mom, whom we can blame for the macabre little goth I turned into later. It was late Saturday night, about 11pm I think. They're going to bed, I'm probably 11 and they're letting me stay up till almost 2 when we had church the next morning. "Did you like it?" "Yeah that was great." "Was it scary?" "No, not really." Mom had me watching horror movies with her since I was 8, so of course I was used to jump scares and things. Unless it's Kathy Bates with a sledge hammer, I was cool. I've always loved the franchise, with Aliens being my favorite. Though I still think Resurrection was great.

Interesting thing that I've heard is that the cast (except for John Hurt) weren't told how "big" (for lack of a better word) the special effects were going to be for the chestbursting scene were going to be because director Ridley Scott wanted to get as natural a reaction from them as possible (so the scene was filmed one time, and when the xenomorph bursts out, their shocked and horrified reactions were indeed natural). Also, in the U.S. the NC-17 and X ratings are essentially the same thing (X came first, then got a little bit of tweaking to become NC-17 in September 1990; neither one is "higher" than the other)
@RichFoster-zk3jo7 ай бұрын
The "pyramid" has been suggested to resemble a human breast in many of the books and articles I have read. The "Director's Cut" restores the "cocoon" scene which also shows Kane in a much more advanced state of "cocooning". Scott allegedly removed the scene originally for pacing issues. One article I read around the time Alien released had the life cycle of the Xenomorph (as it has come to be know) was based somewhat on that of the spider wasp and had a complete life cycle of it's own - no queen was yet concieved. The Xenomorph getting more slimey as time progresses was supposed to convey the idea that it was continuing to age/morph with time. I just saw the recent short run theatrical cut release - still looks great on the big "silver" screen. I had seen it back in 1979 with a friend on opening day and loved it so much we sat through it twice. Some other friends told us that some of the props including the "Space Jockey" were in front of the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. We went there later but no "Space Jockey", just some garbage. We later learned that some religious freak set fire to the prop because it was the "work of the Devil". For many years the "Mother" set and some props like the Narcissus were on display at the Aerospace Musem in Exposition Park Los Angeles. I wonder what happened to them.

Elgyn from Aliens: Resurrection got the death scene @ 15:10. He falls and catches himself before he falls completely under the floor, but a xenomorph kills him by punching through his chest with the inner jaw.

It's amazing how different movies could have been. This and the original Terminator script.

11:18 - This scene was also in the Novelization of the movie. Yet the 'relief' concept itself wasn't there (as far as I remember)

When I heard of the 3-4hr brutal bloody cut I was 🤯. Always referred to Alien as a Master Class in Suspense…. and it is, just not in the OG version.

A talking Xenomorph, sounds like it would fit more in Spaceballs

Two words: “Ripley’s Panties” To a teen boy this was a scene worthy of an Oscar! Oh and the rest of the movie was real cool, too

I’m pretty sure if anything popped out of somebody’s chest in the middle of dinner even a golden retriever puppy… Would be horrifying.

Yep, he actually reprised the role in Spaceballs (hence his one line in the latter movie of "Oh no, not again!")

I think it was a good move that they didn't give the alien a sentient intelligence. That way, in the sequel, they were able to reveal that, while they do indeed possess intelligence, they're also part of a greater hivemind, so their wills are not really their own. They're like ants or bees, a natural hierarchy that the audiences could understand and accept. It made it more creepy knowing that they were basically workers with one purpose, and that was the preservation and expansion of their species at any cost, whereas humans are more about self-preservation. A fact that gave the aliens a bit of an edge at times. The first two movies were brilliant, but the franchise started to go downhill after the third installment, in my opinion anyway. Thanks for showing us what could've been, Minty! It definitely wasn't as good as the final product.

In 2002, Alien was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. In 2008, it was ranked by the American Film Institute as the seventh best film in the science fiction genre, and as the 33rd-greatest film of all time by Empire.

They should have put him in stasis like Ripley said. The crew would still be alive and the Weyland Yutani company would have got their alien.

I think that Ridley Scott brought back those flying mice in Prometheus didn’t he? It’s been so long since I watched the film, but I thought they had a flying camera drone.

The whole 'relief' subplot makes no sense, since it's pretty clear the crew spends most of the trip in hibernation.

One of the most influential movies as a kid for me. I remember seeing it at the classic RKO Keith Theater in Flushing, NY. I was 8 years old at the time. I remember finding the view master film camera. I would go frame by frame and marveled at the action and look. I dived into the production design of the film. I credit Alien and Star Wars as the start of my love of art , illustration and comics. I eventual also was taught graphic novel art by the legendary Walt Simonson who also did the Comic Adaptation of Alien for Heavy Metal Magazine. I still draw comics and those films especially Alien made love drawing detail in my own work.

My understanding was the actors reaction to the chest burst were genuine because they were so shocked
@forcewielder20007 ай бұрын
Yeah, I heard that too. Apparently Ridley Scott deliberately toned down by a very large amount what they were told was going to actually happen in the scene to make it seem like it would be a lot tamer than it turned out to be because he wanted their reactions to be as natural as possible (John Hurt would have probably been the one exception among the actors, since there was probably no way to fit him with the necessary special effects gear without him having a pretty good idea of just what was going to transpire during filming), so when they seemed like the characters were shocked and horrified by what was happening on-screen, it's because they actually were!
