Have you seen or experienced any of these mistakes in Indigenous self-identification?

First, you are amazing. Second, a major problem I run into with self-identification is that I run the risk of being criticized, attacked or simply being misunderstood. Thanks to Mom of English descent I have pale skin. Dad was brown being Portuguese-American and Native American. His mom was born on the Sisseton Wahpeton Reservation in South Dakota.

Thank you for your kind words, Whitecrow! I understand your concerns about self-identification. It can be challenging when external perceptions don't align with your identity. Remember, your heritage is valid and unique, and you should embrace it in a way that feels right for you. It's unfortunate that misunderstandings or criticism can occur, but standing proud in who you are is a powerful way to shape the narrative. Keep honoring your heritage in your own way! 🧡

As someone who works with intertribal native urban youth and families in Bay Area California, this hits home. Here in the Bay there is a big movement lot of “self-identification ” in organizations, circles, email signatures, zoom norm video calls etc. I will say peoples behavior, tone of voice, energy projection speaks louder than their words and questions. Many organizations mesh self-identifying “inclusiveness” as cultural humility. Practicing cultural humility from the roots methodology does not require a person to self-identify as a cultural norm. Having a beginners mind, open mind, being genuine curious to learn about others peoples cultures vs projecting one’s intent and unconsciously at times people are being forceful to ask people to share about their identity. I appreciate your video and addresses the shift in perspective so everyone can be themselves without being persuaded to participate in a cultural values that does not contribute to one’s authenticity irrespective of how people express themselves.

Absolutely, your insights are spot on. True cultural humility should come from a genuine place of respect and curiosity, without any pressure for self-identification. It's about creating an inclusive and open environment where people can be themselves without feeling forced into certain cultural norms. Keep doing the wonderful work you're doing in the Bay Area - empowering intertribal native urban youth and families is a truly meaningful endeavor. Much respect and gratitude for your perspective! 🧡🙏🏽

Hi Mallory I am 1/4 turtle mountain Ojibwe. I have brown curly hair. My mother was 1/2 Ojibwe/French and was sent to boarding school. She was always called a half breed when growing up in North Dakota. So, she didnt want to say she was indian. My Grandmother told me stories about my great grandparents and I loved it. Here where I live in Oregon I am around the Klamath tribes and they think im too white to say im native. So, its difficult, although I identify with the native ways deep inside.

Hey Deborah! It's wonderful that you have such a strong connection to your Ojibwe heritage, even though navigating your identity can sometimes be challenging. Remember, your connection to your roots is valid regardless of what others might say. It's all about how you feel inside. Keep embracing your heritage and the native ways that resonate with you. Your story is a part of your identity, and nobody else can define that for you. Stay true to yourself! 🧡

Could you give a definition of Ally? And even better, maybe some examples. Thanks And great videos!
@MalloryRoseCo
@MalloryRoseCo Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you asked, Steve! An "indigenous ally" is someone who supports and stands with indigenous communities, even if they themselves are not indigenous. They listen to indigenous voices, learn about the history and challenges faced by indigenous people, and actively work to combat stereotypes, discrimination, and systemic issues. For example, an indigenous ally might attend cultural events to show their support, educate themselves about indigenous cultures and issues, and use their platform to raise awareness and advocate for indigenous rights. Being an indigenous ally means fostering respectful relationships, amplifying indigenous voices, and contributing to positive change for these communities.

The main place I am asked if I self-identify is at the hospital ER. when triaged, I am asked. They say it’s so we get “proper treatment” but after my experience at the hospital I think it’s because they want to know who they can discriminate against.

We were talking about this at work today. We have members that mark Mixed or Other rather than Native at schools because maybe they don't feel "native enough".
@MalloryRoseCo

It's a common sentiment, many face this dilemma, marking "Mixed" or "Other" due to not feeling "native enough" Encouraging open conversations and sharing personal experiences can help build understanding and empower people to embrace their heritage in a way that feels authentic to them. 😊🧡

I have a question even though we are not indigenous . Why do I feel more native than I do my own race
@MalloryRoseCo
@MalloryRoseCo Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, Kim. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, such as personal experiences, values, beliefs, or even a deep appreciation for certain aspects of the Indigenous culture. Sometimes, people might feel a stronger connection to a different culture because it aligns more closely with their own values. 😊

I don't get it Mallory, what are you looking for?= 1-that nobody should be ashamed of being an Indian, 2-to create a support group for Indian culture... I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. I know that in the Anglo-Saxon world there are no mestizos like in the Hispanic world, but wouldn't that be the solution? equalize through miscegenation, adopting things from one and things from another. And Mallory this is very funny to me Do you ever notice how a lot of Christian run a round talking about Jesus forgives But has no deeds I am not a Christian but some thing is not right when they think they are forgiven and they are still doing the same shitty things that they ask for forgiveness funnyuhh

Christianity is a man-made religion designed to control people thru fear, intimitation and murder.. The name of Jesus means earth pig/horse in the Latin language and Jesus means Hail Zeus in the Greek language. They will never have forgiveness. Millions of people were killed for Jesus's name and this so called virgin Mary. Over 111 million indigenous men, women and children in Canada and the US were murdered, raped. Over 200,000 children were taken from their parents here in Canada, not many made it back home. Jesus is the devil himself.
