I always say it is literally constructed like a passing storm. The quieter reprise at the end of the storm moving off. Rain at the start, wind, lightning, the song has it all.

26:10 you've just helped me figure out why I love this band so much.. Each instrument plays it's own story. While they might connect at points, they each have a different perspective on the song while still maintaining balance within each others parts. Probably why you often will hear them play somewhat dissonant at times

Fun fact: The intro riff is pretty directly referencing the main riff of "Frame By Frame" by King Crimson, a massive influence on Tool. Danny Carey just finished a tour with BEAT playing the 80's KC catalogue with Steve Vai, Tony Levin and Adrian Belew 🫡

I've felt for a couple of years that Maynard is also alluding to Aldous Huxley's Antic Hay, written a century ago. One part he wrote "Seven million people . . . in an empested atmosphere". - Seven Empest
@Some.Canadian6 күн бұрын
This fits way too well for it to be coincidence, the deep reference (what else do people know Huxley for aside from The Doors of Perception and Brave New World), the allusion to a contagion (empest), and thee classic fuck you buddy. You might be on to something here.
@ericgoodwinart6 күн бұрын
The “payoff” you were looking for, to me, are the guitar solo dances over the bass and drum rhythmic backdrop, through the eye of the storm that is a tempest. Ironically, this happens at 22:20, right before you say you are looking for the payoff haha. Also at 23:46 feels very climactic to me. The Tempest is also a Shakespeare play, and in the play as well, this violent storm is a metaphorical one inside of oneself. And the end of the song brings so many disparate parts of the song together, creating the final flashes of lightning and thunder and wind, with the glimmer of hope and sunshine poking through, until it fades into a peaceful resolution and aftermath of a tempest.
@ericgoodwinart6 күн бұрын

A lot of this song plays around 21/8. The "5" you kept counting; you stopped counting one bar too soon sometimes. It is 5+5+5+6 which is 21. Then you have the 7+7+7 which is 21 as well.

7empest is a nice epic piece, but I certainly wouldn't say it's the standout on the album like you've been told. Tracks like Fear Inoculum or Pneuma itself for example, are on a higher level from a musical/compositional point of view. My favorite on the album though, by far, is Invincible. Invincible isn't super complex, but it's a monumental piece that gives me chills from start to finish and has boldly entered the ranking of my favorite TOOL songs (and consequently my favorite songs in general). If I may give you a piece of advice, you should try to make a video about Invincible if you want to continue discovering this album.

15:30 It isn't random. Justin is just playing an over-bar phrase/pattern over everything else. It's the same thing Meshuggah have built their whole sound on. There's a pattern that you can lock into if you just think about the bass part, but in-between Danny's accents and Adam's extreme legato playing, it starts to shift around.

Hey so the Bass part that confuses you at 12:23. Its groups of 6-5-6-4. So the reason it sounds weird between Danny and Justin is because the 2-2-3 is repeated 3 times during Justin's 6-5-6-4. So 2-2-3 / 2-2-3 / 2-2-3 is 21. Justins riff going 6-5-6-4 before it repeats is also 21. So Danny has to play his pattern 3 times before Justin's riff pattern starts over again. The pattern as a tab is 12-12-12-0-0-0 then he shortens it with 12-12-0-0-0 then back to 12-12-12-0-0-0. And the tail end is 8-8-10-10. All picked at the same tempo.
@Janokins7 күн бұрын
for that 7/8 section in the middle I always imagine the bass pattern in the groups of the notes 3, 3, 2, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2... if people could hear me counting it in my head they'd think I'm mental lol

Even with the pauses you made, that did not feel like a 16-minute song. I got that same feeling from The Pot and Vicarious where they felt shorter than they actually are 😆 always visualize a circle being drawn over and over with their music, because it feels like it's played in a circular motion, if that makes sense.

Now that i'm focusing on the bass i notice how they sometimes "set up" the listener for the next part, like a little preview, Justin will sometimes start spoiling the next guitar riff then when it eventually catches up and comes together it's a satisfying resolution, and then obviously Danny's doing whatever the f***
