I highly highly highly recommend watching the live at Madison Garden to get a full picture of what they are about. Also, Theo Katzman is a wizard interchangeably killing it on vocals, guitar, and drums like they each are his main instrument.

The drummer, Louis Cole, in addition to being a phenomenal solo musician, is part of a duo, Knower, that does a similar thing to vulf- they write the songs and then play with a larger group of phenomenal musicians, often live recording at home. Their latest album has phenomenal bass playing from Mono Neon and Sam Wilkes. Highly recommend checking it out some of those videos- Abyss, Nightmare, I am the President. Any of them really.

As an active rock and pop drummer for nearly 30 years with a somewhat respectable repertoire of chops, I've always been fascinated by these jazz drummers and their effortless 16th note triple strokes on the ride hand while they're simultaneously doing intricate 16th ghost note patterns on the snare. Never could do that and I most likely never will 😅

That compressed sound is pretty much a constant in Vulfpeck. Jack Stratton (the frontman on keys wigging out) whipped up this “Vulf Compressor” back in the day, and it’s a consistent element in their signature vibe

Another great reaction! I really do enjoy these. You really know what you´re talking about when it comes to all the little details i´d probably miss. I really recommend checking out more Vulfpeck, especially Dean Town. It is an instant classic and over the years millions of bass players will learn it, just like millions of bass players learned What is hip by Tower of Power. Since Louis Cole is playing drums in this video, i have to recommend him too. His band Knower is absolutely fantastic and also in this new funk/jazz realm. The song Overtime (the live band session) is really insane and Sam Wilkes is tearing up his P-Bass.

I can't remember who it was, but a jazz great was playing with Miles Davis and played "the wrong note" and Miles just added it to his part in response. After the show he said something to Miles about the "wrong note", Miles' reply was something like "MFer, if you played the wrong note then I played the wrong note, and that's just not possible now is it?"

I'm a nube in bass playing, and rather old for this, but the one thing i get about all bass lines and especially funk bass lines. You can't just play your part, you must dance your bass lines through your body, science you feel it you'll get some results Look at Joe Dart he literally dancing his bass lines

It's insane that a musical internet creator doesn't know about Vulf. They broke the ceiling, sold out Madison Square Garden as their first show. The Fearless Flyers opened. By the time you figure out what Joe is doing, you're way behind. They're all jazz musicians and iirc, that's Louis Cole behind the set.
