By the early 1980s, Land Rover had pushed the Range Rover so far upmarket, yet done so little to the Series Land Rover that there was a door left open for a practical family SUV that was more affordable. The Mitsubishi Shogun filled that brief successfully enough to prompt Land Rover’s hasty release of the Discovery, but Paul reckons the Shogun could be the better bet...

I recently got ahold of a 1988 2.5d lwb. And its an absolute beast! Only 115k miles on it, and an absolute joy to drive! Recently towed a 3.5 tone boat on a 1.5 tone trailer over 250 miles. It preformed amazing, genuinely was happy to tootle along at 50mph. And it genuinely wasn't to bad on fuel!

Some 80s graphics on the side and it would look the business! Very interesting classic I must admit I’ve never even thought about

I daily drive a short wheel base 1988 Pajero NE Sport fairly similar to this that I've owned for the last 20+ years. It's done over 315,000km and just keeps going.

I own a 2.5TD Pajero since 1991. The latest MK1 version with basically all available options. It’s in mint condition with always a virgin MoT since the beginning. Never one single oil leak, never one single issue with this car. Most of all, it passes PUC pollution test too way under the average! That car is amazingly built and it’s a fun and sporty 4wd car. Love it ❤

Good review... thanks, I've had my 1992 Daihatsu Fourtrak for just over a year now and love it to be fair, done a bit of light restoration with a few little jobs left this year.

Great video. And definitely a great Monti. Love this clasic. I own a 1988 with a 2.6 and I honestly love it. My kids love it as well. I get so many compliments on the streets. People always ask what it is, since this is very underrated vehicles. But when It goes toe to toe with a jeep they immediately admire.

I had a 1997 Discovery that was sadly totaled in an accident. Thinking about getting one of these to replace!

Proper off roader and used accordingly by working people . Loads of farmers used them around us because they were reliable and dependable.

From the mid 1990s until the Autumn of 2001, I had a blue Colt Mitsubishi Shogun SWB 2.6. I really liked that 4x4 (they weren't called SUV's back then!).

Sad to know that it's being auctioned by Mitsubishi UK among 13 other heritage cars. Sad to see the current financial status of Mitsubishi motors. I have an 89 swb 2.6 pajero and it's my late father's first brand new car. It's the first car i drove and it's been neglected fog very long. I was lucky to find the same 4g54 engine for it in 2020 and I'm slowly restoring it aside from another 1997 2nd gen lwb one.. oh this one was my father's third 😂 after totaling a 1993 gls pajero. Anyway thanks for this awesome review.. it brings back good memories and you're right about the long throttle paddle travel and how this little beast responds to it ! Wish me luck on the restoration i really need some support 🥲❤

I do like a Shogun, although I prefer the Mk2 (with the SuperSelect all-singing-all-dancing 4WD system), but that one is such a time capsule. The comparison between a SWB Shogun and a Moggy Traveller is spot on - nice and supple at the front, then crash-bang-wallop at the back! I have to point out that Paul's Land Rover knowledge has some gaps - the Landy on the 'middle of the range...rover' advert is an early One Ten with all-round coil springs, and by the time the Shogun hit the UK's shores the Land Rover was available with a 2.5-litre 4-pot (all iron, pushrod, Weber carb, definitely no balancer shafts - a long way from the Mitsubishi motor!) as well as the V8 in terms of petrol engines. An LR Ninety (beam axles and coils on both ends) isn't as harsh but is much more bouncy. At least it's not a Fourtrak from the same period, with leaf springs all-round. Completely indestructible, but comfortable they are not!

We had a LWB model (1990 model year) as a company pool car many moons ago. Never drove it off road, but I must say that the steering was simply awful - vague, too many turns lock to lock, and it was very agricultural (as I suppose it should!). It galvanised my lack of love for off readers! It did though have a nice gear change (albeit with a long throw). It somehow managed to look more rugged outside than it felt inside.........
