I personally think he intended to miss despite it being very close. As a starting pitcher you'd hate to face the first hitter in the lineup wi th a guy on base. He probably just wanted to give Clemens a warning pitch.

@mrtrek64
@mrtrek64 5 жыл бұрын
If anyone here is wondering what it feels like to be a Met fan, you need not know anything more than what you've witnessed here in this video. This team/organization, ownership can't even retaliate correctly against a player who threw a spear at the Mets marquee player. At the time the incident happened during the 2000 World Series, all you heard were the talking heads bringing up the fact that Piazza CANNOT chance getting ejected from the series, or injured. This certainly is correct. So what do the bench players, bullpen, coaches, and assistant coaches do? NOTHING!!! NOTHING!!!! Where was the self-proclaimed tough guy John Sterns who should have been body slamming Clemens to the floor while the coaches ran their spikes across his face. Imagine........Clemens hits and knocks out Piazza with a fastball to the head and the next time they meet Clemens throws a spear at him as if to say "yeah..I'll do what I like to and you'll like it". Why the umpires didn't eject Clemens on the spot for throwing the bat baffles me to this day. I thought it was the ball" Clemens proclaims. Well, if you thought it was the ball then why didn't you throw the bat to first base? Unless it's common practice for players to field grounders and then try to hit the runner with the ball? Now enter this Mama-luke Estas, with Clemens standing 60 away and he can't even hit him in the leg or ass with a fastball. He MISSES Clemens. Warnings go out. And what do the Mets do? They heed the warning and don't retaliate. At this point, the warning should have been ignored, take the ejection, and you HIT Clemens. The outcome? Clemens knocks out Piazza, throws a spear at him with absolutely no repercussions. The Mets? Pathetic as ever. In a strange sense, Estas not only embarrassed his team and organization but Clemens as well. Clemens looked at him as if to say.."bro..you serious? You couldn't even show me the respect I deserve by hitting me for I did to your player?" At least Synderguard showed the organization how it's supposed to be done in the 2015 World Series. Oh, the pain of following this team.

I hate Clemens, and his bat throwing thing was ridiculous and inexcusable, but I have to give him credit here. He just stood there and accepted it, and moved on. I don't believe it would have been any different if he was actually hit. I don't even think it was needed to give warnings. Everyone knew exactly what was going on.. it needed to happen.. it happened... and it was over. Done and done.

It is fun the Mets beating the red sox game 6. Clemens was shown nervous. Hoping the red sox would beat my Mets. Calvin struggled. It shook him hearing the Calvin chants. Bob Stanley wild pitch Mookie at the plate. Then Mookie hit it error on buckner. The Mets win it.

The Mets were really a bunch of wusses. When Clemens threw the bat at Piazza and the Mets sat there like potted plants the WS was effectively over in game 2 second inning. Was Clemens' act intentional? Of course it was. It was rage fueled by steroids. It was a baseball hulk moment. Clemens went on to dominate the Mets that game. Series over. 3 peat 4/5. Dynasty established. Jeter MVP. Parade. Story book stuff. New York sports may never see such utter dominance by any single team for a millennia.

Shawn Estes, a marginal player thrust into a prime time spot fails under the pressure. If he had no intention of beaning Clemens then what kind of pitch was that? If he had intention, it was all lost and anticlimactic with the miss. He accomplished the worst of both worlds. Clemens is a bully, and a punk. I hated his being on the Yankees, along with Wade Boggs. We needed Bob Gibson on the mound for the Mets that day. This coming from a lifelong Yankees fan since 1978.
