This is actually an entirely valid way for someone associated with "honesty" to lie, to me. Honesty and truthfulness can be used as synonyms but don't actually carry the exact same meaning- from Applejack's point of view, it'd be more dishonest to come back with nothing after raising everyone's hopes, than to tell a small lie while she fulfills the expectations of the money another way. It's still dishonest, but you can see how she'd justify it to herself as the lesser of two evils.

I hate Hasbro and everybody else's treatment of Applejack. RD can be shallow, Pinkie can stop smiling and Fluttershy can be the jerkiest jerk of jerkville, yet they are loved by millions. Applejack is not only an element of Harmony, but she's also a virtue for life, and she's not perfect, but people seem to forget that and keep regarding her as a background pony.
@Fanimati0n9 жыл бұрын
+Igorcastrochucre well, she's exactly where she wants to be in life. She's got great friends, a steady job, loving family, her life is just great overall. That's boring. If you're at where you want to be in your life, then there's not much conflict going on, and conflict is the backbone of all great stories. Don't get me wrong, i like A.J., but it's hard to write conflict for someone who's life is going exactly how they want it to.

The episode itself is good. I'll get to my thoughts on the elephant in the room in the episode in part 2 of this episode review. The humor is great, I like the chase scene, Applejack's reasoning, while predictable, is justified and the moral itself is pretty good. The only issues is being too predictable, which doesn't hurt my enjoyment and the fact that the town kept pressuring Applejack that led her not to come back to Ponyville. That just bothered me a bit. Overall, this was really good. 4 Out of 5 Stars Gold So Far: 54/130

Applejack definitely needed more focus in this episode, and the whole "You're gonna get it, Rainbow Dash" I'm sure is because Rainbow Dash refused to turn back the wagon for them. Okay Rarity likely didn't hear that, but she could assume Rainbow Dash was more likely than Fluttershy to leave them in the dust.

And some people think that Dash's injured wing in 'Read It And Weep' was her comeuppance for this. Although Rarity wasn't the one who made Dash 'pay,' she WAS there when Dash crashed. It makes the fact that the injury happened somewhat less vindictive, although knowing how durable Dash generally is, it also makes it obvious that she was only injured for the Almighty Plot.

The reason I don't buy that whole "honest liar" deal is because of Apple Jack's wording. "I will tell you tomorrow at breakfast" does not become true just because you didn't go to breakfast. It's still a lie because you didn't tell her at breakfast. There are ways they could've done that much better, but they didn't think the diction through.
@carlbloke87978 жыл бұрын
Shady Doorags you're actually wrong But the thing is AJ still used logical loopholes so yeah she was still doing honest lying
@ShadyDoorags8 жыл бұрын
Carl Bloke "You're actually wrong." Um... care to explain how? The phrase :"I will tell you at breakfast tomorrow." does not become true simply because Applejack didn't go to breakfast. It is still a false statement, ergo, a lie. Had Applejack said "When I come to breakfast tomorrow, I'll tell you." THEN it would've been manipulation and not a straight up lie, because at that point, what AJ said was true but her intention was false.
@carlbloke87978 жыл бұрын

I just don't like Applejack's attitude towards her friends when they find her, not the fact that she was lying. She carried this annoyed expression the entire time, like she just didn't want to see them in general, and it felt like she was trying to convince them that they were the reason she left. That feeling intensified when her fake reason for leaving was that "She needed a change of scenery." If one of my friends did what Apple Jack did, I wouldn't be mad at them for losing or even for lying, but just for being willing to never see me or anyone they knew again and acting like it wasn't a big deal to keep that lie. Apple Jack just came off as extremely selfish to me in this episode.

For me, it's not a matter of Applejack being dishonest, it's a matter of Applejack abandoning her family and risking the lives of other ponies for something she probably should have known better. The mayor and the prize money seems more like an afterthought to her. Again, I understand the idea of facing family and loved ones out of fear of failure, but even though they were building her up as the best, I felt it was obvious that they'd accept her no matter what... and "honestly lying" about it feels like it would strain their friendships far more then revealing the truth would. Also, I'm sorry, but Pinkie Pie is just SO OBNOXIOUS in this episode!
@avinashtyagi210 жыл бұрын
She didn't risk anyone's life, she didn't ask them to chase her Heck she didn't ask them to come looking for her. They chose to do so. As for her family, she didn't abandon them, she planned to return once she had earned the money. Also she didn't lie, she skirted the edge of honesty, but she never actually performed the terms of her agreement with Pinkie which was to come to breakfast. You can fault her for being stubborn and perhaps even running from her problems, but not for those other things

This episode leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can understand being so hard on yourself and having that really obnoxious mayor breathing down your neck about the prize money, but I dunno, I just don't feel like abandoning your friends AND FAMILY, while also risking your life and the lives of 4 wagon-pulling ponies is worth it just to save face and avoid admitting that you DIDN'T come in first (not the fact that she lost, but that she didn't come in first). The fact that the ending it so sappy and ham-handed just made things worse for me, and I REALLY don't like how Amy Keating Rogers characterizes Pinkie here (as well as in A Friend in Deed).
@avinashtyagi210 жыл бұрын
Why did they chase her if it was so dangerous? No chase, no risk. She didn't abandon anyone, she planned to return once she had earned the money.

I know that not everyone tells the truth about everything, but like, she's the ELEMENT OF HONESTY, that would be like if vanilla extract sometimes tasted like blackberries
@SitaraAleu9 жыл бұрын
+bob manperson I guess you're right. So because Pinkamena exists, Pinkie can't be the element of laughter, and we can't forget Rarity's occasional bouts of selfishness and greed. That wouldn't be the element of generosity. Fluttershy losing it now and again and verbally abusing her best friends? Can't be the element of kindness can it? Rainbow Dash putting her own goals and ambitions ahead of her friends' success on occasion and letting her egotism take over once in a while? Loyal, that ain't. Twilight often realizing she has much to learn as Celestia's pupil and knowing she may never know all there is about magic? Well, if she doesn't know it all, how can she fully represent the element of magic? Do you get the point I'm trying to make? Mr Enter has said it himself multiple times; perfection is a flaw and nobody is perfect. The other five certainly aren't perfect, no one can tell the truth 100% of the time, and Applejack shouldn't be expected to be perfect. The ponies are likable BECAUSE they aren't perfect.
