This is the story of bootlegger Big Bill Dwyer , The king of the rum runners in 1920s New York. Partner of Frank Costello . Owner of two NHL teams and an NFL team , until a tax evasion charge took him down.

This is my great grandfather. My family was interviewed (mom, aunts, uncle) for a documentary on him called 'Only The Dead Know The Brooklyn Americans.' My maiden name is Dwyer, of course. Thanks for covering him!

I ain't seen every one of your videos yet but I'm working on it. My old man joined the Coast Guard back in the 40's chasing rum runners on the St Lawrence river, he said the runners boats were too fast and had such a shallow draft there was no way they could catch them.

So many other mob classics & articles track back to Dwyer, Johnson, Thompson, I mistook him for a politician-unless there is a political O’Dwyer I’m just getting this gentleman confused with. Maybe that’s what it is, O’Dwyer is the politician, Big Bill is the bootlegger. Such a shame that this Bill Dwyer never stashed his earnings out of reach, outside the state would’ve probably done the trick, back then. Or just south of the border or some island chain, in the 1920s. But given The Great Depression, so many just lost everything anyway, & it lasted 9-10 years’ time. In the day the US recognized a three-mile limit for waters under US jurisdiction. "Rum Row" was located just over the three-mile limit out of reach of US authorities. There were "Rum Rows" outside of various ports and inlets. As you described, fast speedboats - many custom built - would sneak out to the mother ships, load up, and head back home. Stealth was favored, but occasionally a Coast Guard cutter with an honest crew would attempt an intercept, and then speed was necessary.

The aircraft engines were Liberty engines designed and built in the US for WWI. The Liberty served on many US aircraft, but so many were surplused after the war they were handy for the rum runners' speedboats

Man I like how you put these shows together. You focus a lot on the backstory which is truly the main story. I’m a new sub and definitely gonna wack out all your work. If you ever come across the name Lenny Europe in your travels, do a work up on him. He was the most feared black stickup man in 50s Bronx/ Harlem. He only robbed black gangsters and even after his death would make the jukebox shut off simply by the mention of his name. The old guys told me that if he had to open his mouth to tell you to give up the money you had a problem. He’d walk in the spot and light up a cigarette and all the money would land on the crap table. Then he’d just look at someone and they would gather it all up and give it to him. Never saying a word. Real, Name brand, black gangsters from the Bronx who were old legends in the 70s but were still nobody to play with, didn’t wanna talk about him. One told me he was like the angel of death to the streets.

Yeah I've seen all of your videos, it's good that you started with the Jewish and Irish Mob, they were sorta here first after all. But I can't wait until you get start on the Italians, especially the early ones waaaay before Organized Crime truly became organized....Anyway, being Canadian, this particular episode is kinda interesting to me. I've heard and read about his criminal exploits but I did not know that he actually had an Hockey ownership career. An official one too. Not surprising because a lot of early hockey ownership have ties to the mob, especially from the 20's to the 50's. And some of these guys are actually in the HOF, lol......
