This scene still messes me up. Imagine exorcising hostile spirits is your job, one that you're used to at this point. But there comes an instance where a man is begging on his knees for you to let him and his family continue existing, since there is nowhere else for them to go. It puts you in a situation that forces you to recognize the spirit's autonomy, that it has desires, just like you. This isn't just a spirit, it's a man. You're not just exorcising a group of spirits, you're killing a family. And you're just 14 years old.

Yeah it forces him to abandon the simple mindset and humanizes the spirits. It's a way tougher job description than what he signed up for and is liable to traumatize somebody if they can't come to terms with it. Thing is though if he was OK with his emotions he could just go with the flow because there's no reason not to, but at this point mob can't accept his feelings as a reason to do anything. Quite simply he doesn't trust himself at all.

@@kekero540 He's been doing it to evil spirits. And when Mob defeats them, he doesn't destroy them. They get stripped of their powers at least (like Dimple), or go to the afterlife at most (The biker, the pervert in the girl's school). That's what is supposed to happen anyway. Besides, I think it's fine if they pass on as long as they have no regrets. The bikers seemed really thankful and happy when they left. The pervert didn't, but that is because he was bad. Unlike the Bikers, who went into a light, he went into a darkness. If the family was banished by Mob, I would assume they would go into light as well. To be honest, absorbing them, like Mogami, is worse than defeating them.

This scene is so beautifully written. In Mob’s perspective, spirits are just as real as humans, and he acknowledges them as such. For them to try to make him exorcise them would be like putting a gun in a middle schoolers hand and ask him to execute an innocent family. Reigen first sees it as a mere moral dilemma for Mob, when really it’s so traumatic it’s making him have a panic attack. Shows how innocent Mob is, and how much Reigen cares when he realized he pushed Mob too far. Best episode so far.

Also, let’s not forget the previous “exorcism”. The apartment lady thinks a spirit is haunting her, which terrifies her and she calls Reigen. But when she finds out it’s just a creepy neighbour, her attitude completely changes, more towards disgust. IMO this surprised Mob, because to him a perverted spirit and a perverted human should be viewed in the same way. Such a great character building episode!

God I love dimple's actions in this scene. He tries to provoke the dad because if he turns out to be a dangerous or evil spirit, then mob can exorcise him without feeling guilty. After all, if he had left him there, then what's to say he wanted attack the next person that came along? And, if he turns out to be guilty and Mob takes care of it, then Dimple would have also given Mob an easy out for his panic attack. Dimple was not only testing the father, but also trying to help Mob, even if it meant he had to be the bad guy. Absolutely brilliant writing.

I love how this reinforces the mindset that Reigen instilled within Mob. This would be harming innocent souls who genuinely want nothing more than to be left in peace. To exorcise them would shatter Mob's emotional stability, and Reigen knows him well enough that he can immediately tell the general gist of what's going on. Reigen then acts accordingly and Mob's mind once again establishes that he made the right choice learning from Reigen It's okay to just listen to what your moral compass tells you at first glance

I think Reigen did understand Mob as soon as Mob explained his dilemma. Reigen saw it that this situation is harmless, and doesn’t need any help at all, but rather he saw that his clients were the ones that needed exorcising. If spirits are capable of change, then so can those clients.

Not exorcising the spirits was an option as well, and Reigen did told Mob it was okay not to do the job. However, Reigen didn't really understand exactly why Mob was so unsettled until the last moment. The clients were simply there to add tension, instead, the real conflict here is Mobs inner kindness against his own morality and professionalism. He's not worried about those three students, but people in general who would get hurt by the spirits he failed to exorcize.

@@craziestgolem4209 That's probably a more extreme interpretation of it. The more immediate concern for Mob is that once he accepts the possibility that spirits can be good, he doesn't have a way to tell which spirits are good and which ones are evil. If Mob cannot discern good and evil, he might mistakenly let off an evil spirit in the future which ends up hurting future clients.

Looking back, it really makes sense that Reigen would blame himself for Mob's torment here. After all, he's the one who emphasized to Mob the heavy responsibility of not using his psychic powers against people, while _also_ telling Mob to exorcise ghosts as part of his chosen practice. For the first time, Mob has encountered spirits that he *sees* as real people. It really does all tie back to how, for all Reigen's good intentions, him getting in over his head and pushing into places he doesnt understand leads him to really hurt Mob. And in season 3... Ho boy

I'm not 100% sure what happened to Mob here and I'm hoping to clarify. Did being put in the position of executioner to an innocent and peaceful family of spirits cause Mob to momentarily lose it and have a panic attack? Normally when that happens we get a percentage increase or a full-blown emotion overload, but here he just started hyperventilating and shaking. Or did he suffer from an incredibly unfortunate circumstance of seeing too much over the years? He has literally been taught to blast away spirits for the benefit of humans since he was a young child and while learning about the complexities of emotion and life and an entirely new world (which only he can see) at once; he may very easily have gotten wires crossed in his head about how to rightfully handle these situations. He's banished thousands of spirits over the years without batting an eye but now when its expected of him as an older boy in such a specific and tragic circumstance he has to completely flip the way he looks at spirits as a whole because he can no longer do it with the same carelessness or innocence ever again.
@germsspices
@germsspices 4 жыл бұрын
The second explanation is closer, but it has nothing to do with unfortunate circumstances In Season 2 episode 1, Mob told Emi that he was going to face his emotions and value them as part of himself. Since emotions are so heavily tied to his psychic powers, this also meant that he was going to have to deal with the morality of how he uses his powers. Instead of following everything Reigen said much like a robot, he deliberately chose to think about the consequences of those actions on his own. Recall from Season 1 episode 3 that Mob tried to lock away his emotions along with his psychic powers. In season 1, Mob followed everything Reigen said at face value and casted emotions out of the moral equation during exorcism. To Mob, anything supernatural was considered to be evil. When Dimple revealed himself in s1 ep3, Mob said: "thank goodness you're a ghost". In that instance, Mob was initially unwilling to hurt humans with his powers, but exorcism was suddenly justified simply because the target turned out to be a ghost. Likewise, Mob tolerated Dimple's presence not because he's redeemed himself in episode 4, but simply because Reigen deems him harmless. However, following Reigen's instructions doesn't meant everything was fine. Mob typically handled evil ghosts without problem, but complicated situations put him on the spot. Mob was obviously bothered about breaking up Dimple's cult and consulted Reigen at the end of the episode about it; similarly, he was bothered by the degree of abuse he put Teru through, even if it was in self-defense. For Mob, the ethical confusion was similar in previous situations but the wrongness of it is more obvious here with the ghost family. What's worse for Mob now is that he consciously refused to throw away those concerns despite Reigen's assurance. Opening his eyes to the world of ghosts in season 2 led to a chain of philosophical and moral pondering on Mob's part. As Mogami had said in S2 Ep4, Emotions are tied to psychic powers in the Mob-verse, and psychic powers are intertwined with the supernatural world. With his emotions in tow in episode 2, Mob witnessed various situations where humans behave the same way as evil ghosts, as well as situations where ghosts behave the same was as humans. In reality, Mob's emotions werent so different from your average empathetic kid; the difference was that Mob had always been able to see and communicate with ghosts whereas other people couldn't. Mob had tried to "act normally" like other people by shutting his emotions out until that point; however, re-introducing those emotions-- compelling Mob to "think like a normal person"-- meant that he was going to "act differently from a normal person" given his unique position.

@@MRXDS1989 Nobody could possibly be that perceptive of what goes on in the mind of an antisocial teen. From Reigen's perspective, Mob had been doing the same exorcism on a daily basis with absolutely no problem. And if you go back to season 1, it's not even the first time Mob felt discomfort in his presence. In S1 E5, Mob was freaking out about what he did to Teru even after the fact that he had done it. There's simply nothing Reigen could've done at this point; Mob is going to experience that discomfort sooner or later on the way to growing up.

@@germsspices I like your explanations but no. Reigen from the beginning has been using Mob that's a FACT. Mobs growth will make him more aware of that....ridiculous to say he wouldn't come to terms with that when he clearly notices mob changing

So Im a little bit confused by his dilemna before Reigen threw the salt, was Mob considering the fact that HE would have to hurt the clients to protect the ghost? Or was he just thinking they would be hurt superficially if he didn't go through with it and was having a dilemna because he was recieving conflicting orders of "stick up for yourself" & "the customer is always right." ?

He just realized something at that moment, If he had lived his life exorcising dispiriting spirits to protect civilians, Then shouldn't he hurt disturbing people if he wanted to protect the spirits?

@@NonCrazyNorGamer Even from a more passive standpoint, if his decision not to exorcise these ghosts essentially led to people getting hurt, then he's gonna see it as his fault. That he killed those people.

The clients were adamant about the spirits being exorcised, they couldn't stand the idea of those spirits continuing to exist. Mob knows he's not the only psychic in the world, even if he refuses to exorcise them, the clients could find someone else to do it. In that moment, Mob believed that the only way to stop that from happening would be to get rid of the clients

Serious growth here for Dimple. He didn't seem the slightest bit surprised that the father didn't want to hurt anyone. He provoked him to show Mob that some exorcisms aren't clear cut, and that the dead don't suddenly become evil. He forced Mob to show authority or at least a form of self-reliance.

Reigen only had psychic powers for a brief moment at the end of season 1, since Mob believed in him so much that some of Mob's power temporarily transferred to Reigen. He loses that power but Mob's power going through him made him able to see spirits like Dimple

Reigen’s power is quite literally being a responsible adult. He’s Mob’a life coach more or less, teaching Mob to be a good person, lest he end up like those in Claw. Quite possibly the best character of the show. Really shows One’s capacity for writing relatable characters.
