Thanks for this. Passed my mod 1 today first time. Very anxious during my training day yesterday so i was quite nervous. The test centre was an hours ride away so i think that helped a bit. There were 2 of us and i was second. I passed with one minor. Thought id struggle most with the slalom and figure of 8. All went well. Came to the hazard avoidance and i thought id screwed it up. First pass, i was concerned with speed and completely missed the hazard. Apologised. He said no problem as he knew i was nervous. Second time i was slow at 41kmph. 3rd time i thought id let off the throttle too early, but had gained enough momentum so it got me at 50kmph. Phew! Very pleased with the 1 minor. Looking forward to booking my mod 2 asap and finally ditching my l plates and selling my 125. Im 50 so better late than never 😊

God knows when I'll get to take again 😕
@C9S13 жыл бұрын
At least we have dates for lockdown to be over now which is great! Don't be put off or disheartened, just remember it basically all comes down to nerves. Exactly, you'll pick it up in no time again - all the skills you've learned is there 👍 Treat / pretend the test is like a practice runs, that really helps Btw for the slalom, common mistake people do is swerving in and out to narrowly next to the cones (it's the natural thing to do). The best thing to actually do is to go in and out using as much space as you have - it makes it so much easier. There are technically no rules with how wide you can go! Let me know if you want more clarity on what I mean by that

Passed MOD 1 today with no minors (yay). Really helpful vid dude, you seemed calm. I was a bag of nerves! Thought I would add a few tips which helped me. 1.Get a good instructor - My instructor has been brilliant and all of the manoeuvres were performed in a smaller space than the test, i.e. cones in slalom were about 1 step closer together. 2.Get good with the back brake - Back brake is your friend at slow speed, really helps balance the bike. 3. Figure of 8 - Give yourself lots of room, and go a little faster (1-2mph) than you think. The bike will lean further and turn tighter (strange I know). 4.Look where you want to go, SS SS is great at that, check the video out spot on! With the Slalom, look at the cone after the one you're heading towards. As soon as I learnt that, had it nailed. 5. ABS - If you don't have ABS on the emergency stop, don't use the back brake. Moto GP riders don't ever use it. Obviously use common sense, if it's wet you might need to. But compared to what I practised on there is soon much room and loads of grip (in the dry). Definitely practise with cones closer together than they will be on the test. Honestly felt like I had so much room with everything!! Really enjoyed it in the end and found it easy (can say that now). Good luck to anyone going for a MOD 1. Now... on to MOD 2.
@C9S17 жыл бұрын
Congrats, you clearly know your stuff too and mastered it! Everyone's different at handling stress but being calm and collected makes all the difference, especially when you hear that gate slam shut. Really appreciate you dropping all those extra tips for other people, they're all very helpful. Especially with 5 - it's such a common failing point for new riders with little experience doing their test locking up their rear wheels because of that, and they don't have full appreciation that it needs to be applied gently. While some might not agree on 0% use of rear breaks for it, I guess it's a fool proof way of not locking them up haha! You should be looking forward for the MOD 2 then, it will just be a nice ride out for you - good luck with that
@oliveranthony70127 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No problem, thought that one would be controversial (no.5). The bike I was riding (Z650) was a twin and that has so much engine braking when left in second. Day to day I would use the back brake. Put to pass the test, nice little trick ;). Keep the vids coming, have a nice delivery! Olly

its still the same for anyone wondering now. also if you struggle like i did with the wheeling it back using the seat i pushed it forward using the handle bars turning it so it was infront of the box then just wheeling it back again using the handle bars. also with the figure of 8 I had to REALLY push the guy to admit i could go between the first set of yellow if needed but he said it wasn't good control though so it does seem as if that one is down to how the instructor feels. Its also helpful i found to ask what the speed was on the control stop just so you have a rough idea what you were doing for your 2 that speed matters so you know to go for the same feeling if its right and do not look at the speedo its what failed me on my first one i hit the blue cone on the swerve because i glanced down to check my speed.
@Tuppoo946 жыл бұрын
In Finland the handling test goes like this: 1) 20 meters (65 feet) straight on, stop, then a U-turn to the left, stop again, then a figure eight starting with a U-turn to the left again. All of this is done at a slow walking pace, using the clutch and the rear brake to maintain speed, and the rider is only allowed to put their feet down at the stopping points. The turns are done in a space that's roughly the turning circle of the bike plus 1 meter (~3.3 feet) in width and 19 meters (~62 feet) in length. 2) The rider accelerates straight on to 50 kph (~31 mph), then swerves around a traffic cone obstacle that's 8 meters (~26 feet) away from the starting gate and 1.5 meters (~5 feet) to the either side of the riding line. After swerving, the rider has to return to the original riding line within 19 meters (~62 feet) to go through the end gate. Counter steering is required to complete the task. The rider has to climb up to third gear or higher, and their speed is verified with a radar gun. 3) The rider accelerates straight on to 30 kph (~19 mph), then leans in order to avoid a traffic cone obstacle placed 15 meters (~49 feet) away from the starting gate and 5.5 meters (~18 feet) to either side of the riding line. After clearing the obstacle, the rider immediately returns to the original riding line within 15 meters to go through the end gate. The rider has to climb up to second gear or higher, and their speed is again verified with a radar gun. 4) The rider accelerates straight on to 40 kph (~25 mph) changing up to third gear or higher, then brakes to a complete stop without locking up within 12 meters (~39 feet). While braking, the rider changes down to first gear. After stopping and putting one or both feet down, the rider immediately accelerates again while avoiding a traffic cone obstacle that's 8 meters (~26 feet) away and 3 meters (~10 feet) to the either side of the riding line. After avoiding the obstacle, the rider returns to the original riding line within 8 meters. Stalling the engine is not allowed in the task,and speed is verified with a radar gun. 5) The rider accelerates straight on to 50 kph (~31 mph) and brakes hard and straight with both brakes to a complete stop within 14 meters (~46 feet). Speed is verified with a radar gun. If the student already has a car driver's license before the handling test, there are 6 hours of theory lessons, 6 hours of riding lessons, and a 30 minute theory exam with 50 picture questions about traffic situations, 15 about motorcycles and riding a motorcycle in general, and 5 about the risks involved in riding a motorcycle. The student can have 7, 4, and 1 wrong answer in each section respectively. Also, the student must be able to demonstrate or point out the function or location of key equipment to make sure that the bike is safe to ride. After the handling test, the student also has to pass a 25 minute road test in normal traffic conditions.

Two of three most common fail points (third being avoidance) so not to worry man it happens a lot! Get yourself re-booked ASAP if you haven't already done so as wait times in summer can be long and get some extra training in when you're waiting. Look at the comments below on locking the rear wheel, I've got into detail on it and other people have mentioned very helpful advice. With the U turn you most likely put your foot down as you didn't have high-revs in combination with good rear brake use. If you feel the bike is dipping having high-revs allows you to stabilize the bike by letting go of the clutch which gives you enough power to straighten the bike up (momentum). Also as I mentioned in the video make every inch of space between the white lines at the start and look where you are going in the end so you don't undermark the lines (have a tighter turn = more chance of putting your foot down) or overmark the lines.

@@C9S1 hi mate. Just want to say thanks for your help with the videos. I've been in a travel lodge for the last 8 days in Glasgow at bikerite it's 4 hrs away from my small home town in the NW of Scotland. Yesterday I passed my mod2 so so happy. I found it really hard as my town has one small roundabout and that's it, so driving in Glasgow was a challenge. Your videos kept me cool before the tests all week. Getting my insurance sorted out today & I'll be out on my Yamaha Tenere 700 today. Cheers mate

Passed inside the yellow cone as my instructor told me it would look better as you do it the way o the diagram. Didn't know you could pass outside of it. This helped me warm up for the U turn excerpter to do the figure of 8 tighter.
@C9S17 жыл бұрын
With the figure of 8 you can literally take as much space as you want - as long as you don't hit any cones / put your foot down but in reality the examiner will usually make you go around once or twice extra if you take it wide. And remember with the U-turn to edge right up to the left white line (wheels almost touching) before you're about to turn to utilise all the space you have - you'd be surprised how much this helps.

Not keeping your nerves under control is the main reason you will fail, I did mod 1 when it was raining very heavily, nothing like doing emergency stop and hazard avoidance with limited visibility and wet surface, but I was determined to pass and I did it 🙂

Great video - thank you! I have watched riding school videos on the test and one insisted that you had to do two lifesavers before turning the bike in the u-turn - is this true? They justified it by saying that by the time you have travelled further down the road the original lifesaver from moving off wouldn't be valid?

I was doing really well then the front wheel came off the bike during the emergency stop and I got launched over the handle bars. Only impression I left on the place was the two gauges the front forks left in the tarmac. I retook the test a week later on a different bike but it had been raining a few hours earlier. I was getting up to speed on the bend for the emergency stop and lost the bike and hit the fence. Front wheel just let go completely. I now ride a moped on my car license instead but I've had eight accidents in twelve months.

great video bud. I went for my mod 1 training yesterday. I've got it booked for the 9th. feeling confident enough to pass, although even doing the training made me feel very nervous.
@C9S17 жыл бұрын
Thank you man. What part is making you feel most nervous? Focus and practice on that manoeuvre/s until you've perfected it and hopefully that should make you feel less stressed on the test day. Good luck with it!
@mrunknown41577 жыл бұрын
ss ss hi bud, it's probably the emergency stop. when I was doing my practices I kept applying the back brake without even realising and skidding the back wheel. I'm doing my test Friday morning, as long as I focus and try to calm my nerves I'm sure I'll be get through it.
@C9S17 жыл бұрын
Ahh another one with this problem - I've seen this so many times now with the emergency stop being the main issue to new riders where they lock up the back wheel. Look at Oliver Anthony comment below (I've hearted it) he explains how to avoid this perfectly and also my response to GTADoctor. Should really help you out.

ss ss well, yesterday went well. I passed my Module 1 & only had me minor, which was because I was slightly under speed on the hazard avoidance. module 2 booked in next week!

Just to give you a update, I passed my theory test so now having lessons then going to book my Mod1. my friend passed two weeks ago and said he didn’t find it that hard, he said it’s all about controlling the bike, and he said make sure your always doing shoulder checks when your going in and out of the gate.
@C9S17 жыл бұрын
Not just in and out the gate but whenever necessary during the whole duration - as soon as you get on your bike to when you get off you're being assessed. Also if you treat the whole test as if you were on an actual road (as hard as it is!) it'll help you not to forget to do your life savers and correct observations. And that's true Mod 1 focuses on how well you can control the bike. Do your lessons, have fun, be relaxed and good luck with it!

I just watched this even though I passed my test 3 years ago - still have nightmares about the avoidance one at the end. We practiced it with my instructor and every time, I kicked a cone. Came to my Mod 1 and I was so nervous about that - but didn't kick it. Great video though and really helpful for anyone preparing for Mod 1. Have you done any figure of 8s or a u turn in one complete go since you passed? nah....me neither! ;)
@C9S17 жыл бұрын
Haha isn't it much nicer watching it when you've actually passed. The avoidance really is the most evil one out of all them, and thanks for that as long as it's helped one person not go through the misery of failing I'm happy. I actually hav-no, no I haven't and I'm still waiting for the day I do!
@omugz94447 жыл бұрын
ss ss I initially failed on Mod1 - on the hazard avoidance- I fixated on the first blue cone and clipped it. I knew my fault straightaway... having had to wait 4 weeks to retake Mod1... I promised myself I would not do the same silly mistake again. Wahey... Mod1 passed 2nd attempt.
@oakstrong17 жыл бұрын
I have done very tight complete U-turns a few times... with one foot on the ground. And parking, I could always lift the back wheel it the bike ain't straight when I park it. LOL I'm sure though that I will fail just about every part of module 1, including driving as fast as 25 kmph: my bike was too old to cope with such speeds and the traffic for most parts won't allow fast driving where I am; and since I have never learnt for a test, I can't do any of the other maneuvers either. Where or when do you weave for example, what's the point? The most I've done is to move a little to the side when avoiding some other vehicle that's come too close - but like I said, only in slow speeds. I will most likely fail module 2, too, because I'm not used to drive the speeds you do in UK and for the bad habit looking over my shoulder too far and too much: I haven't had mirrors on the bike for 3 years as they just fall out. (Edit: I should have said that I rode my bike in a country where you don't need a driving licence for bikes - and even for cars a licence is just a formality, which you can get after 1 hour driving lesson that teaches the controls. I'm amazed how few accidents there are, even considering the slow speeds.)

I did my Mod 1 in Birmingham in 2016 when i did the figure of 8 i was told to go around the blue cones i could go round the yellow but would have scored a minor . I did pass my mod 1 that day with a couple of faults one was sometimes not in gear whilst doing my observation checks and second was not at quite the right speed on avoidance .
