Cowl patchin' time! In this episode of the Yard Art Model A Build the sheet metal patching begins! Starting at the front of the car, all of the holes get filled in on the firewall, the front pillars get patched at the bottoms, and the lower cowl patches get made and installed. Also made a new header panel over the windshield, arched it to match the original, and welded it off into the roof line.

My dad who is now 86 going on 87, owned a 1930 Model A. He owned it before I was born. In recent years he sold it to a man in Kansas City, Missouri.

I really love to watch you work your "magic" with all of that metal repair. I used to be a sheetmetal/structural repair mechanic with United Airlines way back in the day on old DC-6s and Convair 340s. You kinda remind me of some of the stuff I used to do with the metal. Only I got to use aluminum, which is a lot easier to work with I'm thinkin'.

1: I love that welding helmet. 2: The patch and re hole idea for the firewall is a good idea, and will be safer in the long run. Those doors are gonna be tough.

Even those small patches on the cowl and replacing the screen top make a huge difference to the profile of the wee beastie. You're right - those doors are going to be super fun to do.... Hope there are enough reference points left to see where the lengths start and finish and / or butt up to! I must have missed an episode when you decided what she was going to have as a driveline (or I have forgotten), so I will have to go look back and see what I can find. All the best!

I like the way you modernize some details and approach here and there, this is kind of a really great restoration. Keeping authenticity to the smallest nut would be pointless. Also really like the idea on engine improvement with a carburettor. Would love to see this beauty running

Until I stumbled across the video when you first got the A, I never watched many resto videos, even though I love old cars so much. I've been a fan ever since and love watching this old girl come to life. Question though, and I apologize for my ignorance on this type of work, what was the black spray paint for when attaching the cowl? Is that for proper alignment?
@rottersgarage
@rottersgarage Жыл бұрын
Basically I just coated the bare metal where the cowl bolts to the body, seeing that it's never going to come off again. When the car gets painted you will never be able to get paint in there so I just hit it with Rust-Oleum so it doesn't rust inside in the future

exactly the video I needed. thx. The radius on the header is that the same radius as the one on the original piece or is the radius of the wood different?
@rottersgarage
@rottersgarage Жыл бұрын
Basically the original header panel was an inch shorter and square, the wood was an inch taller at the center and radiused down to the roof line, in my case I just added the inch to my header panel and put the radius of the wood into the steel. Usually if the panel is good, I just put a piece of one inch square tube on top and notch the last foot or so to achieve the original radius of the wood.

where did you get that Brake I love it
@rottersgarage

Yeah it's quite the unit. I bought it and the giant shear in my back room through an online auction a few years ago. The brake is pretty wore out, could use a bit of work on the folding arm, but it does the job!

I'm starting to think this car, other old vehicles and old car parts you have have lead paint and other things that are also toxic
@rottersgarage

They do, and I grind it, and weld it, and touch it, and then inhale all the fumes on a daily basis. It's great! 👍

@@rottersgarage its not a good idea to inhale lead paint fumes, they're not good for health and can cause lead poisening
