Modern HE Washers Suck!!! (Part 2)

Back from the Home Depot, with a replacement drain hose. They don't even have decent drain hoses anymore, you'll see what I mean in the video.
We start this POS back up, and then I noticed that the idiots that brought it back in the house and hooked it up, hooked up the hot and cold backwards! Morons! It's marked!
Then the gas line and vent were hooked back up to the dryer. I don't know what to say about modern dryers really, they have one function and it's pretty hard to mess that up. Tumble clothes in hot air.

The two videos in this series are hilarious. They really prove that these modern appliances are awful. I made sure that when my parents unfortunately replaced our 2000 whirlpool direct drive that they replaced it with a speed queen.

+jaykay18 Definitely worth it. My parents wanted to get one of the awful HE washers. I amazingly got them to listen to me. Too bad our whirlpool had too many issues to be worth repairing.

It's amazing how fast the quality of washers went from something that would provide good service for 15-20 years to providing mediocre at best service and your lucky to get 5 years without a major failure that will cost almost as much as the machine to repair. Everything went downhill around 2010.

+tallboyyyy That's exactly right. I'm finding similar things with electronics today, I always hear stories about "the old Dell computer that lasted 11 years, now this thing I've had for 6 months and it's been in the shop 3 times". Wait a minute, the computer I'm using IS that 11 year old Dell!

My parents bought one of those lid locking belt drive whirlpools labeled Kenmore. The one they bought was the very first model of this style that Sears sold. My mother hated it from the first time she used it. They had it at their summer home so only being used 6 months a year by 2 elderly adults the motherboard failed maybe a year and a half out of warranty. Including 2 service calls needed to replace the board it cost them at least 3/4 what they paid for it to get it operational again. The replacement board lasted about a year and died again. This time they bought a new one again, only a Hotpoint with a mechanical timer but this time got the 5 year service plan. So far so good and they are about 2 years in and no problems so far. Keeping fingers crossed but expecting the worst in the next year or two.

tallboyyyy I feel bad for the "old folk". Years ago, if they needed a washer, they'd go into the store, talk to a salesman, pick a machine, got it home, and it worked! If there was a problem, by some stretch of the imagination, the store would send somebody out so fast. That's customer service. Now it's the same story except the machines are junk and the stores don't care. I've had good luck "reflowing" chips on computer motherboards with a heat gun, but in a washer with exposure to moisture I'm sure it's a different story. Was just in Lowe's the other day with the wife and walked through the sea of spaceships they sell now. I actually found a Hotpoint that had a mechanical timer, but unfortunately the rest of the machine was junk! Oddly enough my old GE washer had an electronic control board/timer, but that never failed. The rest of the machine failed around it though. But it came with the house so it was what we had. I's going to grab the next old-school washer I can get my hands on, whether I have room for it or not. And probably grab more thereafter, just to have. Even vintage washers break, but after 25 or more years they're allowed to!

***** Yeah, things have gotten too complex for their own good. I remember when laptops came out with built-in webcams. China thinks everyone wants this stuff, but that's not true--you have no idea how many I've seen with a piece of black tape, a sticker, or even a band-aid over the webcam! Just extra stuff people don't want, making the machines more complex for no reason.

+Jerome Davis That would depend on your definition of better, HE washers are definitely better at breaking down so they have that going for them. They are also better at leaving clothes smelling musty and mildewy so if you like that smell an HE machine is what you need.

Kinked hose, almost invisible labeling of water input and a host of other problems. Looks like a typical install. Now I wonder why some have a fear for flying.

Don’t forget, some H.E. washers actually fill to the top on small loads. How is that saving water?. They also make washers with a Deep Water Wash/Deep Fill option which is designed to fill up the tub with more water but often times it doesn’t even work. Most washing machines made today do in fact have a deep fill option. Even the Speed Queen classic washer has auto sensing and deep fill, no manual load size options. I think Amana had an H.E. washer that literally filled to the top on TINY loads or just water. Don’t forget, they blame the dry spots on the high spin speed although they are just not getting clean. Also the classic Speed Queen does fill to a higher water level every time. Even Speed Queen got affected. New washers either use too little water or too much water.

When the machine tries to be smarter than the operator, that's where I draw the line. I personally will select what size load it is, I will select what cycle I want, I will select what water temperature I want. I don't use the "popcorn" button on the microwave, there's no one-size fits all solution. Though I do have a Panasonic microwave with the "Genius" sensor and it can automatically reheat a small or larger portion without my telling it anything. Nice trick, but I can usually do it better manually. I learned to drive a manual transmission car early on and preferred driving one, they just don't make them much anymore. My automatic lets me shift myself, but it's still nothing more than playing; a real manual gives you full control over the car. I don't have a smartphone, I don't need it to do anything for me, I will do it myself. I am smarter than the machine. These days most people aren't.

HE washers don't do a very good job at cleaning clothes. Old school washer do a very good job at cleaning clothes. Oil spill should get a speed queen washer.

Bad quality machines actually started in the early 2000s but then progressed as time went on. In 2001 whirlpool introduced one of its first he top loaders. Calypso wash action. As unique as the machine was many people including my aunt had numerous problems with the machine. I heard there were even class action lawsuits. In March 2006 whirlpool introduced the Kenmore elite Oasis and the whirlpool Cabrio shortly after. The Cabrio was probably one of the worst washers ever made by whirlpool. We actually owned one and didn't actually have many problems except it did have a control board defect every time we moved the machine from one house to another we had to replace the main board because it would throw code F1. In the end of 2010 whirlpool replaced all their lower end machines (DD) with these new "VMW" washers during the Obama administration.

On a side note I just remembered that one time my mother said the machine wasn't working propertly. She called the company and they asked her to place the phone on speaker and press some buttons The guy said you need to replace the board. Umm Okay.........So weeks later some guy shows up in his personal car no less goes to the machine and replaces the entire board. We were aloud to keep the old board. "Don't know where it is now" Problem was fixed after that...

+Jason Hernandez The only thing it was designed to do was suck money out of the buyer's wallet. Then suck more out when it breaks, then again when it's replaced. The cycle then repeats.

+jaykay18 Yep. The average HE washer customer has to go through this. Once the warranty expires the control panel breaks. Owner calls the Manufacturer. Then has to wait 3 days for a return call. Owner wait 5 days and has to call back. Then has to wait another 3 days which is really 5 for a return call. Finally they get the response and says "Technician will be out in 2 weeks." Once the Technician comes over, they find the problem and order the replacement part which will be delivered in a week. After that, problem solved for one load of laundry. After that the machine breaks again and the cycle repeats. So for an entire month, the Owner was out of a washing machine. That sounds like hell to me. That's basically what happened to +Karl G with his video "Samsung washer POS." I felt bad for him when I saw that video.

Kyle's FireArms Reviews I have a Whirlpool Duet Front-loader that is 10 years and seven months old and it still works fine. The controls on the dryer are going out but it's still able to dry clothes and I've been hang drying or line drying my clothes on the shower rod because I believe clothes last longer if they dry by themselves.

Automatic temperature control is annoying. My speed queen washer will take full hot water. They unfortunately put a flow restrictor on the hot water valve, but it still uses only hot water when set to hot.

+jaykay18 I watched it awhile back. It looked like an interesting setup. The washer in this video forces you to use it because even if you used your setup, the electronic controls would likely produce an error.

The difference between HE washers and old school or speed queen washers. HE washing machine:Hi there I here cuz I'm more Effective and Effcant. I'm a big waste of money and I'm here to give you a good wash by less water. And hours to wash! Old school and speed queen:Yo, got some clothes to wash, ok got it. I will get your Chothes in and out clean in 30 minutes or less.

My house has a heaven forbid LG front loading machine from around 2004. It works flawlessly its amazing how the quality has gone downhill in this short time. But I still think the broken GE filter flo would do a better job than the LG. I may do a short video of my grandparents LG just like mine this week. Something funny is it took me 11 years to find the spin only mode. It wasn't in the instructions or anything. I literally Accidentally found it.

Okay, why is everything made in China (I assume that's where the drain hose came from) so cheap & badly made?? How do you even screw up something as simple as a drain hose anyway!? As for the fill hoses being hooked up backwards, I would like to believe that it was a mistake that they hooked the hot water hose to the cold inlet and vice versa, and not that the guys who hooked it up were environmentalists trying to "save the environment" by making it so you only got cold or "warm" water by selecting hot and warm respectively, knowing hardly anyone chooses cold water washes. I WANT to believe that, but there's a part of me that just can't. Finally, I watched a washing machine buyer's guide by This Old House on KZbin, and one of the reasons the guy doing the video gave for buying an HE washer is that since they have higher spin speeds, your dryer won't have to work as hard, and will use less energy. If that's the goal, then why do we even use clothes dryers to begin with? The GM Frigidaire Unimatic washers from the late 1940's into the 1950's spun at 1140rpm because, and I think you've mentioned this before, that you had to be very financially fortunate to afford a clothes dryer in those days. The reason direct drives & speed queens don't spin that fast is because they don't NEED to. Clothes dryers are much more commonplace in this day and age, and they were meant to dry clothes, so why is the new goal to have them work as little as possible at the task they were built to do!? To me, that's like cutting down more trees by hand with an axe so that the chainsaw doesn't need to work as hard.

You're not going to believe this, but that drain hose was actually made in USA. Probably 1 of about 3 things Home Depot sells that is. As bad as the quality is from China, and everyone saying "buy one made in America", the quality is no better. The problem is Corporate America. They are out for every penny they can get, at the expense of everything. Quality has gone down on everything in this country at the very least, probably around the world. Pretty sure the fill hoses were hooked up backwards by mistake. The monkeys that installed it don't know the difference, misread it, just got confused, or careless. I saw that Buyer's Guide as well, what a joke that video was. Great for a laugh, anyway. I've seen plenty of Unimatic videos and saw what they can do. I fully agree that washers don't need to spin as fast as they used to, but there's still a part of me that says "they did it once, they can do it again". Otherwise I do agree, most everyone who has a washer also has a dryer. The dryer adds fluffiness also, and there is nothing like something warm straight out of the dryer.

Yeah, hot is SUPPOSED to be on the left, but it's not always. I know of at least 4 other instances where it wasn't. I agree,, older washers are much much better, and I have 2 Whirlpool direct drive machines that I use. I will never replace them.

jaykay18 hey I was wondering what is the difference between the newer and older direct drives. Is the only differance the agitator fabric softener dispenser qith the spokes in the middle or what I.dont know

Slightly different designs. It's almost like a car model, one year they come out with a new design of it, and then over the next few years it looks basically the same but there are just a few subtle differences. The fabric softener dispenser is considered a separate part entirely. I suppose they felt it was necessary to include the spokes (or more accurately, cross-bracing) to prevent it from exploding during spin; later on they were removed as a cost-saving measure. If they could save 1 cent worth of plastic times hundreds of thousands of machines sold each year, well they made themselves a tidy little sum just doing that.
