I had a opposum sneak up into my engine and wrap'd himself around my intake to stay warm. Scared the crap out of me when I went to check my oil the next morning! Great vid,Dave!

Hey Dave, I am big fan and a student of your school I am enjoying this series on trapping, but what I like the most is your love and respect for nature you didn't mean to catch that critter, but you didn't kill it or harm it, that show the mark of a true woodsmen and I am honored to be apart of your school.

Thank you Mr. C! This series gives me enough information to try some trapping myself. I will make some mistakes, but you give me a place to start from, so I can begin to learn. You are a gifted teacher and you have the ability to inspire folks to step out of their comfort zones to try something new. Thanks Pathfinder!

I liked the way you handled that animal with respect, care, confidence and obvious experience. BTW, side note, I magnetized my first cloth sail needle today, and tested its polarity in water.

Thank you, Dave for continuing to show and set a good example of the correct mindset of a hunter/trapper in that If we kill, we want a clean kill. If we miss, we want a clean miss. Either way, we never want anything to suffer. Kudos Brother! :)

Song "living good" Badhorse band, gun I think is a survival rifle .22lr over .410 decked out in camo. I love the fact that opossum just played dead for you the other night I had two under my truck and throwing sticks rocks yelling and they kept charging me. If I had on my steel toe boots instead of sneakers they would have gotten kicked but had to give room until they moved enough for me to get in my truck.

Hey Dave, You have talked about other things to cover the pan with. My uncle taught me to trap 30 years ago, and we used crinkled up wax paper for the pan cover, and it worked perfect. Do you know if this is a common practice? And i know you have said this will be a long series, and may answer down the road, But when the ground starts freezing will you switch technique and cover your set with peat moss with a light dusting of natural dirt? Nice series, John.

You should give poly fill a try in your dry land sets. Its really cheap and you can just tear off a piece and use it under your pan and then you don't have any thing over your pan. it won't collect water or freeze.

Oh man, this is like being out trapping myself. Can't wait for the next update when you catch a coyote. How much does the coyote fur sell for during wintertime? 100-200 dollar? I guess you'll skin and stretch those you catch? What kind of animals can you target for trapping in your area? Do you have bobcat?

I'm glad to see that you are showing people that you don't have to kill an animal just because we can. I've been hunting for years and nothing makes me more angry than a killmonger. I have seen a lot of animals killed for no reason other than someone wanting to kill. I always stress that you should never kill something that you're not going to eat or use. Our wildlife is to precious to just kill off. Who knows, that animal you let go today could be a future meal when you need the most. thumbs up

Now you talked about resets in this video, I have a question. If a trap works in a location like this one did. Will you repeatedly reset it in that location because other animals scents are there and it will attract more? Also do you plan on carrying more trapping equipment on your site? Thanks for the great vids keep it up brother Jeremy Jeremy

Mammals seem to be the only thing discussed for these traps. Would a Turkey be attracted to the bait? What can you do if you catch a turkey in one? According to furbearer laws you could dispatch the non target animal, but what about something non-furbearing? Just curious.

I can see moving a trap closer to a dirt hole set since the coyote would be likely to get close enough to paw at the hole, especially if he sees fur down in the hole. But for a scent post type of set where there is nothing to paw at I suspect that the trap should be moved back a little further since the coyote will likely stay back and only stick his nose out to sniff the post. I could be wrong since a lot has to do with the average size of the coyotes in a given area.

the only reason a coyote might chew their foot would be while biting at the trap, they might chew on their numb foot thinking it's the trap. but they won't chew themselves out since they'll bite at the trap or numb foot inside the trap, not higher up since they can still feel that and know it's part of their body. most states now require offset or cushioned jaws to prevent numbing of the foot and prevent foot damage from trap chewing.

There's no doubt in my mind if I were to start trapping in my area, 80% of the time I'd find a skunk in the trap. The stinky little suckers are abundant in this area. Other than, "very carefully", anyone got an idea how to remove them from a trap without killing them or becoming a victim of their cologne ?
