"Inside Out feels like the type of story that you could keep expanding on forever" I have said this for years. Pixar could continue to show Riley's life without it feeling like a cash grab.

I appreciated that they didn't make Anxiety a full out villain. She's a regular emotion, like the others, but she goes to extremes in her pursuits. She reminds me of Joy from the original, in that both were concerned for Riley.

I liked that too! Her over eagerness to please when first introduced felt so real, anxiety isn't just being nervous and scared all the time about bad things, it's being nervous about how you come across, being pleasant enough, friendly enough, making a good impression, egar to please, etc.

Having a few things that regularly make you anxious like a presentation or so is normal Being anxious by just leaving your house every single day is not Anxiety at trying out for a team or meeting new people or starting a new job or school year is normal Anxiety that gives you heart palpitations at the thought of going to school or seeing someone you already know is not In some instances yes, anxiety it normal and a part of life, it's just when it's chronic, or causing anxiety attacks, or is something that happens everyday say that it isn't I have an anxiety disorder and until I was 13 I thought it was normal to feel overarching doom or that something was always wrong, until my doctor explained that while anxiety is normal in some instances what was happening to me was not, and that was why I needed to get checked out.

I’d have to disagree about Joy regressing as a character. She didn’t seem as controlling as she was in the first movie. She let the other emotions take charge, she was welcoming of the other emotions, and acknowledged when things aren’t ok. Sure she made the Back of the mind machine, but the other emotions agreed that it was good for Riley. And at the end when they got back to headquarters she wasn’t immediately trying to retake control. She just wanted to stop Anxiety
@lxncexzs
@lxncexzs Ай бұрын
i honestly also thought that Joy was regressing as a character in that scene where the other emotions praised anxiety and she was only pretending to be amazed by her. At first, it was as if she was jealous of the fact that she’s not the heart of the group anymore but that quickly dissipated in the scene where she admits that it just hurts that maybe she really isn’t what Riley needs anymore. It wasn’t jealousy or control issues that made her act that way, it was hurt in her realization that Riley doesn’t need her as much anymore.

I think the reason envy is more bubbly is because envy and jealousy may go hand in hand but they are completely different emotions. Envy is all about wanting what someone else has while Jealousy makes you feel threatened by other’s success. But i would of loved to see Pride that would be a good addition

I appreciate the effort in putting in new perspectives or new ways the filmmakers could have approached the movie (because obviously this movie isn’t perfect), but I feel like your criticisms are going a little too far than past videos: I don’t really remember a lot of positive comments about the movie itself even though you mentioned in the beginning how you were going over the negatives AND the positives. Personally, I resonate with the sequel a lot more than the first, and although the plot wasn’t the most perfectly- made script in the history of animation, it was a great film thats now going on my comfort-movie list.
@herryami
@herryami Ай бұрын
yeah i noticed that too 😅 i think, even though she said she did generally like the movie, the reason the criticisms take so much time (or feel like they do) is because discussing how something could improve tends to take more time than stating why you like something, at least from my experience 🤷🏻‍♀️ edit:typo

Agree. Typically I enjoy the criticisms but this video was a bit overboard suggesting almost a complete rewrite of the movie + ignoring the positive things that many people are resonating with. Definitely not a perfect movie but have to disagree with a good amount. Framing the story within the hockey context added a very relatable/specific scenario for anxiety to shine.

The anxiety scene made me cry my eyes out like a gasket as my heart raced. I struggle with suppressing emotions which became a thing in my early teens. But seeing this movie in my late teens made me question whether the premise would apply to me or not because of the huge gap of time between the first and second films and me not being thirteen anymore. But it was very good at conveying the panic attack scene, especially for me who struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. Normally movies don't make me cry, but next to Soul and UP, this one had me fighting back tears because of how much I related to Riley and her experiences. Especially concerning suppressing your emotions and the literal avalanche that comes along with that which I experienced earlier this year. My mom held my hand during the last few scenes which honestly just made it all the more impactful because this is a film not only for kids or teens but also for adults and it's truly amazing how people of all ages can come together and relate to and learn the different emotions and how it affects a person especially during their teenage years. Nice job Pixar, the bar was kinda low but you raised it.

I enjoyed hearing a lot of your critiques! The only one I disagree with is Joy regressing as a character. I actually feel the complete opposite and immensely enjoyed her development in this film far more than the first. Her annoyance and first outburst at having to deal with the other emotions constantly turning to her for leadership had me laughing so hard. Seeing her accept that she may have less of a role in Riley's life is a great motif that builds on the first film. In addition to that, Joy wasn't the only one deciding what memories to throw to the back of the mind. Fear, Disgust, Anger, and Sadness all had memories that they wanted to get rid of as well. If Joy was the sole emotion getting rid of these "negative" memories, I would agree that it's a regression, but since it's something that the emotions do collectively, it's not entirely a regression.

I actually like that they didn’t include potential crushes in this movie, because I feel like that’s always in most coming of age movies which can be relatable and I have nothing against it but it makes it a bit different, especially since not all people experience crushes that often especially as a tween where friendship is a lot more important

as someone who's the same age as riley in inside out 2, i have to say that it portrayed puberty and "the early teenage years" in almost perfect accuracy. the only thing i didn't like however, was how easily the sense of self could be pulled from the pedestal. in my opinion, even a diminishing sense of self remains for quite some time before fading away completely. all in all, i think it may be better than the original inside out. i really enjoyed the character growth and storyline.

12:02. I think the other reason is because it is a kids film and Puberty does have some physical stuff that requires adults to talk to kids that depending on the child’s age (young children) might not properly understand without the right education. So maybe the BO and the zit on Riley’s chin were the only things Pixar could talk about (although they attempted the puberty subject matter with Turning Red).

Inside Out 3 Theory: I think this will cover Riley and her emotions saving another person. Riley’s dark secret is that she accidentally harmed one of her classmates in the past which was overlooked by the other emotions as they did not see the long-term consequences of the action due to Anxiety not being present. As a result, Riley will meet the classmate again but this time the classmate’s emotional turmoil is what allowed that classmate’s Anxiety to win unlike Riley’s which gradually leads to self-destruction. The emotions saved Riley from the inside, now they will have to save someone from the outside.

I don't think the back of the mind machine was Joy being controlling, because all the primary emotions seemed to agree of its importance. I view it as emotional immaturity, literally not thinking of unpleasant things and prioritizing feeling good. It's the definition of being a kid. When the avalanche of bad emotions is processed by Riley, it shows she's growing up and requires more complex reflections from her own self.

omg! I was not expecting a video review on the movie! Im so happy to hear your take! I love the first movie and I was SUPER excited for the second one! After seeing it, I have to agree with a lot of the points in this review. The thing about this franchise (that I think was even a weakness in the first film) is that I think the writers are not strong or commited enough to give the films more time for ALL Riley's emotions to interact with one another. To me that's the heart of this franchise, is seen these very specific characters beaker with each other in what they think should being done in a given situation and learn how to work together, which is just visualisation of every day life That's what I really enjoy about this franchise, yet in the 2 times around, I always left feeling dissatisfied and wanting more. I heard rumors of a possible TV spin-off, which I will argue is actually much fitting for the concept as they will give them the room for more interesting and hilarious interactions among all the emotions and to flesh out the world building. Which the ladder being another weakness of this franchise since the first film. Like the Personality Islands didn't matter in the second film, like AT ALL, which left me puzzled in how the Believe System and the Personality Islands work together if they are part of the same whole. They do a lot of visual metaphors for the sake of humor yet i think it always making the film weaker because open so many question of how things work upon closer inspection and a film can only explain you so much in a way that feels organic. i think is shame because the concept is so rich, yet it seems Pixar always ends getting overwhelmed with all the creative possibilities that they end up cherry-picking for the sake of having a product they can launch as soon as possible vs a film and a franchise that can hold the test of time. Im really curious to see what a third installment in the franchise would be like that takes the concept of Love, which I will argue is not a single emotion yet an experience that involve a lot of emotions at once which can set up an interesting situation for all the characters to once again figure out how to work together as a team that makes up Riley's mind.

RE: the puberty thing: The gross, physical parts of puberty (particularly for girls) was addressed in Turning Red. I think the puberty factor in Inside Out 2 was done extremely well and in a way that is a bit more universal. Doesn't matter what part of the gender spectrum you land on, your emotions are tinderboxes around this time, and they portray it in the movie as beautifully as the anxiety attack.

Despite that I knew it's not going to be as good as the first, I still managed to find a lot of enjoyment in it and I didn't mind that it was the sequel that we got. Yeah, the villain was pretty lame but the family dynamic is the one that kept me hooked from start to finish

I reeeeally like your ideas 😮❤ I personally would have preferred if fear evolved into anxiety instead of being a new unrelated emotion. So that there aren't any or at least less new emotions introduced but the ones that are there growing with her 🤔 fear becomes anxiety, sadness becomes depression etc

Your analysis was amazing. I watched the movie with my 10y/o daughter and didn't hate it but something seemed off. You were able to put into words how I felt and point out why the movie seemed lacking and almost unfinished. You are absolutely correct that they could have chosen better emotions that boredom. I will say the movie did really help me talk to my daughter whom suffers from anxiety due to trauma. It helped to put a face to her feelings. I think they explained anxiety very well in a way that kids would understand and connect with.

I would love Inside Out 3 to not be about Riley's love life, but instead to be about Riley having a child and them having their own set of emotions[Curiosity, Mischief etc.]. That way, motherhood could be the main theme of the third film. First movie= family, second movie= friendship, third movie= motherhood.

As someone with anxiety disorder, this movie hits so close to home. The depiction of anxiety attack, the build up to it, and the way her core belief kept on speaking on her head over and over while she was having an attack. It's all too real. I cried so hard when they all hugged her and when they finally accepted Riley can be all of that. I love this movie.

I have always thought that Bree and Grace didn't feel that important, i think it came down to their introduction feeling rushed and them being sidelined for most of the film. If they made more scenes with them interacting with Riley, and making their personalities more different from one another would've helped it a lot And i also feel the new characters (specifically Envy and Ennui because Anxiety and Embarrassment are fine) weren't given that much to work with, while i do really like Envy and Ennui's designs (i feel Ennui's similarities to Fear might've been intentional) i feel like their concepts weren't executed very well when it comes to how they made Riley act. Neither of them did that much, and the stuff they did didn't feel that true to what their characters are supposed to be. Envy's personality is alright, but they could've made her a bit more yearning and jealous, because while envy and jealousy are different, they do share a lot of traits with one another and i think that could've been portrayed here Ennui is more egregious due to her making Riley feel more sarcastic or whatever the heck she was doing, instead of boredom like her name implies. They could've made her interact with the console whenever Riley felt bored, because that makes sense. The way Riley acts when Ennui is controlling her feels really random and out of character for her, the other new emotions fit the feeling of puberty quite well, you feel anxious or embarrassed and that makes sense. But whenever Riley acts '''''''''bored''''''''' it just feels forceful and, dare i say, cringy Yea that's all, love the movie, it's not perfect, won't stop me from loving these silly goobers

Huge confliction if Enui was Grey instead of Indigo: Memories Riley no longer cares for turn Grey. It would also shatter the illusion of all the memory orbs looking like rainbow marbles. If Enui's memories looked just like ones she doesn't care for anymore, Riley would lose some marbles! I do agree that Envy should've been less of a tag-along and should've been just as perceptive as Anxiety and Embarrassment about other things that were happening around Riley. The only D.A. excuse I could make for her is that the new emotions might not know much about Riley's personal life before they arrived, which is why it was so easy for them to brush off her friends. I would've liked to see a scene of the new emotions reflecting on older memories. Heck, I was a bit disappointed when Anxiety told Envy she could bring a memory down "next time". However, we never see that payoff 🤷🏽

Interesting takes, I don’t know if I agree that your version would’ve been better than what came out but it’s still interesting to hear nonetheless. Although I have to disagree with your take of Turning Red because that movie hit me so hard and I think it’s such a well crafted window into what it’s like to be a tween while also being really creative story that was fun to watch. Also gotta disagree with you about Incredibles 2, as I did find it to be really funny and fun to watch thus making both movies noteworthy movies within the pantheon of Pixar movies.

i dont see your idea about envy being jealous about her other 2 friends is because at the start of the film after riley got out of the car that she will focus about that situation about her friends after the hockey camp and film makers focused on the bigger picture about riley being more anxious about her future instead of friends, considering that shes a freshman she probably thought that highschool was a hugeeee deal because we saw riley being anxious about scholarships. but i do agree that envy was super bland and extremely chatty instead of being the negative emotion that it actually is in realm life

I thought inside out 2 was so much fun to watch. My only nit pick was that I wasn’t sold on fear and anxiety being so different that they were 2 different characters.
