Yes! Perfect timing for this mod pencil. Actually, better than the first one where you used a single long tube, which I don't have. And I love the veneer method. On a slimline pencil tutorial on IAP (by J.Blanchard) it instructs you to turn that pesky middle band between centers in order to shave down the center ridge and make it flush with the stems that fit into the tubes. He then connects the tubes via this middle "band" as per the instructions and the tubes, now connected, act as one long tube. BUT, as I think you demonstrate here, you don't need the tubes connected. They're not even touching inside the turned wood! Excellent! Now I feel a lot better about making my son this pencil. Great to have you as one of the experts in this field. You are correct on the Mahogany veneer but I'm 99% sure the lighter one is oak which has large pores like the lighter wood used here.

Just wanted to thank you for all your videos. Bought my 15 year old son a Rockler lathe for Christmas and we both turned our first pens last week. My second was a slimline that I did as a modified one piece like this pencil. I have another one piece blank to turn tomorrow. I am working my way up to an olive wood pen and pencil set doing this method and using the slimline kits. Mine will be the brushed chrome or satin chrome. I have a fountain pen kit on the way. It is so addictive, my son is already on acrylic blanks. Anyway, thanks again, your videos have been our main instruction. You certainly are the pen guy, looking forward to where you go next. Was just planning to do some very similar blanks to this. Glad I found your video. One thing I have considered trying when I do mine is to cut the veneer with the grain perpendicular to the grain of the blank, or essentially 90 degrees from the way you cut your veneer. That should allow the veneer to very easily curve to match the curvature of the wavy cut. It is much easier to bend the veneer perpendicular to the grain than to bend the grain strands themselves. I'll let you know how they come out.

Just a quick question Bob, when you did that haring bone pen and had to use ca glue to put all the pieces together, how long did you let it dry before you trimmed the edges and drilled it out? I'm sorry for the basic questions but when I try my first pin I don't want to mess it up.

Nice pencil! I don't care for the center band either. I've made some two piece slimline pens without a center band. I just make the upper tube a bit longer to account for the width of the center band. I end up turning the two blanks without the center bushing. I have to give the laminations a try, it came out looking very nice.

Good you didn't do it like the tut of the IAP. That person's way was to put the center band between a dead and live center and turn the metal down to make a tube coupler that when done the two tubes were touching. This assembly was now glued into the blank. I see this as causing two problems, first the pencil would be a tad short but I think the cap at the end would still cover the eraser, but second you couldn't use a normal pen mandrel since the coupler gets in the way. Only issue I see with this style is that you can't make a traditional "slim" slimline. It could snap in two or get crushed between the tubes.

Hello Cliff, I have purchased some long tubes that I believe I can cut to the proper length and inserted into one single blank. That would let me make the pen slimmer. What are your thoughts on a single tube slimline mechanical pencil? Regards, Bob

Great idea to eliminate the center ring. I think I would draw lines each side of center to keep the veneer in the blank. Congrats on the new shop, did I miss the tour?

Hello Bill, I thought about drawing lines but I wasn't sure just how fat the pencil would be. I just kept tight to the center line and thank goodness it worked out. I did a shop update a while back, the address is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHzHdmd_p9icd5I I'll do another once I have everything cleaned up. Right now, it's a mess. I unboxed everything and now I need to finish putting it away. Only problem is the lathe keeps calling me and I'm not getting my work done. :^) Regards, Bob
