My grandparents had one of those back in the 80's. They used to fill it full of beer and ice. I've camped in it as a kid. The bearings went out and the last I recall seeing it, my cousins were using t as a swimming pool. So many good memories!

Great mod! I had the larger version (4x6?) that I purchased in 1977 to add some "trunk" room to pull behind my new 77 Firebird. It had a brown steel lower and a cream colored clam shell top. Man I used the heck out of that thing for years and it held up well. There are times that I wish I still had it but not as much as I wish I still had that beautiful Bird! Firethorn red inside and out and it flew like its tail feathers were on fire.

The 8” tires can be swapped for 12” tires, same bolt pattern. May have to flip axle, did that 50 years ago on a small camper. The 12” last a little longer. Also place the spare tire on the tow bar preferably under side . The weight needs to stay low. 12” to 18” longer trailer tongue will smooth out the towing vehicle as well as backing up.

I had a Coleman boat in the early 80's. It was made from 2 shells (Lexan plastic), filled with foam. It was light, yet tough. I really enjoyed it for a few years, and gave it to a friend who needed a fishing boat, but was flat broke. 15hp Chrysler motor made it run pretty good.

Its nice to see you put this video together, 2 weeks after you rolled the trailer. Now I can see why its so unstable. Just like I thought, you overloaded it on top and with the top heavy loading it was just a matter of time before the poor thing rolled.

If you're going to be in those drag and drive events, then I have a suggestion you might want to consider... Build a trailer specially designed to be efficient, store more, can take a roll over, and has two spare tires. Make it out of sturdy aluminum. Be sure that everything is easily accessible from the outside, and can be organized to hold more. When all that you need to use on each segment of the route has to be protected, then build a trailer that is compartment. Give the trailer a wide stance to match the width of the car. And... build it so you can use the same trailer year after year.

My grandfather and grandmother had one. They both had Honda gold wings in the 80s/early 90s when they retired and my grandfather pulled it with his motorcycle. They went to all 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Mexico, and Canada with that little trailer. I never knew what color it was because it was completely covered in stickers of places they had been. So cool to see one again.

Try to add a piece of metal underneath the plastic lid where you had the bolts on so you can have some rigidity in the trailer because the bolts will eat through the plastic when you drive and expose the trailer to the roads and vibrations ,, just sandwich the plastic between two piece of metals with some bolts 👍

I would suggest putting the fuel in front of the trailer mounted on braced mounts on either side of the tongue for more tongue weight and a lower center of gravity on turns. Also put guards in front of them so things don’t kick up and puncture the plastic. Would add more storage on top when you relocate also. Just a thought.

Hey Derek - Love your video's & get lots of tips and fun watching. This old gear head loves to see a young whippersnapper who knows how to bring the old stuff back to life. I did something similar with an old Harbor Freight cargo trailer kinda like your Coleman. Diff might be you have tougher plastic shell. I spent a great deal of time planning, Mig welding, burning fingers, etc only to see that after the weight of may fabricated cage I could place maybe 16-18 ounces of cargo on top before it was clear that road vibrations would trash the lid. Hope you had better result as mine was a fail.

Hindsight is probably 20/20 here, but you might consider swapping those slick tire mounts with a spare set of front hubs for the car. Probably would have been convenient if a feller had 10 extra lugs, studs, and a set of wheel bearings for sick week. Always a good idea to use a spare trailer hub to mount your spare trailer tire, too. You might not always smoke the wheel bearings on the trailer, but when you do the parts store won't have the right one.

Cool to watch, that trailer is neat! On the tire mounts, I built a lot of them when my dad and I had a trailer dealership. If you get a bolt that's the same thread as your lug nuts you can use lugs to retain the rim to the mount and then weld the bolts to the mount. Easy way to carry a few spare lug nuts along as well.

Just a little hint. You have raised the centre of gravity on a lightweight & narrow wheelbase trailer. So it could be worthwhile adding some sort of ballast plate underneath the trailer to compensate and bring the c of g lower again.

May want to consider a Dual Mini-split for the garage. I know it's not insulated but it will heat the garage pretty good and you can get them pretty cheap and install is DIY on some units. Better than having to deal with the fumes on the heat maker you have. Maybe one of your viewers near near will help you out?
