I remember VGG when it was a very small channel w/ just a few thousand subs and when he said "I'm just not that guy" is the EXACT reason Ive watched pert near every video since I found the channel. Derek, while you're at it please consider beefing up your drainage system. That little 4" corrugated pipe is not gonna be adequate to carry the water from the french drain and the gutters, especially with the extended drain and double sized building. It should be larger, and probably the new sections should be rigid drain pipe as well for longevity and resistance to clogging. Minimum 6 inches. Maybe add a couple of cleanouts on the backside somewhere. That stuff is important and you only wan to do it once! You're getting a Mulligan on that first installation, this is a great opportunity. That's kinda what I was thinking, too. My thought was, since I know he's trying to keep this cheap, he's already got the road above the shop that the contractors had to make; if he made that road permanent, he could dig a lined ditch or a French Drain on the uphill side of the road that would catch a lot of the water coming down that hill and divert it away from that slope. He could then extend that road to curve downhill beyond the end of the riprap wall, and have the ditch peter out several yards beyond that point. It'd take a lot of the load off that drain tile and help keep the area behind his shop from getting inundated when it rains. Hell, sloped properly, if he left the downhill side of the road sloped high, it'd help keep the water flowing into the ditch and not down the riprap wall. And all he'd be out is gravel, some HDPE liner, and a little more dirt work. That's kinda what I was thinking, anyway.

Also do not drain your gutters into the french drain. It needs to go into solid pipe separate from the French drain or at least after the French drain.

Derek, after they have dug that site out, consider having them grade a swale into the ground above the cut on the hill. It will catch most of the surface water and divert it to the side of the building. Won't cost much as it is now, already dug up and softened by the truck.

Being a guy that does the construction thing, it’s ok for the beams to be laminated 2x6. Just make the bottom 4’ treated and stagger your joints. 4x4 just isn’t beefy enough. I would recommend 6x6 if you want a solid timber.

Your drain pipe for the gutter downspouts off the back side of the should be routed in solid pipe and separate from the perforated French drain pipe. Also the gravel should be separated from the nearby soil with a filter fabric.

Agree! gutter water tend to flush down biologic materials in the drain pipe clogging it up ,this can be partly addressed installing leaf grades where the roof gutter pipes dumps out into the ground pipes. But dumping water in the drain pipe is also keeping the French drains/ ground moisture . So separate pipes is a good idea even with leaf grades.

Correct. And the Bieris are facing a wall of water. That's the red clay from north Florida through Georgia, becoming the sand-clay mix. Much more stable. But look uphill. It looks like there might be roof, or pavement upstream. None of this stuff slows water down and a French Drain is a band aid. That's why the building is caulked and has a stain line on it. Do y'all get where the late-stage of hurricanes drift off, after the coast? Raleigh. Tennessee. There will come 12 inches of rain in 24 hours. This is the Lodge. You can interrupt that. You have diverted it, with a berm. My opinion, you need an elongated pond, just after the berm. With diversion walls, or berms. The point is to have reins on the runaway horse. It could be done, with a shunt for storm events to let the water go. I would be happy to help, I will reach out to engineer friends, we could maybe fix this. The amount of water this property has to receive and manage is far beyond the capacity of a 4" Perforated Pipe in a French Drain. Cook some hot dogs for some storm water engineers. Peace.

Just to let you know. Before dumping dirt. Scratch the top soil off first. Top soil under fill dirt will always hold moisture. Meaning your berm will never be stable. Then use that top soil to cover the berm

Looks great Derek! It's good to hear you talk about your reasons why you chose to show the build. I lost interest in a lot of other channels just because it became unrelatable to me. Channels that were doing cement pours that cost more than my house. Derek, This looks like a great project and will be perfect to meet your needs. About 15 years ago I built a 24X60 foot pole barn on my property in west central NJ. The main purpose was to store a 42 foot diesel pusher motorhome and not have to winterize it. I opted to use concrete poles below grade that clamped onto 3 2x6 sandwiched lumber to make the poles (8' apart). I used conventional wood trusses and a conventional shingle roof. I'm glad I did. No rain leaks and very quiet inside when it rains. I used about an inch or spray foam insulation on all the exterior metal walls plus 6" fiberglass. The ceiling has 12" of fiberglass insulation. The 14x14 foot overhead door is insulated. 100 amp electric sub panel was added. The floor is 8" thick concrete. walls and ceiling are sheetrock. I contracted out the construction of the pole barn and concrete floor. To save money, I did the interior framing, insulation, electrical and sheetrock myself. The hardest part was in hanging 4x12' pieces on the ceiling 15' off the floor alone (used a drywall lift). The insulation and thick concrete floor has allowed the interior to stay above 35 degrees even when we have had nights below zero and highs below 32. So far I've never had to add heat to keep the interior above freezing and never had to winterize the motorhome.

Way back when I first starting watching you- I think because you made it work with very little- and the items you did buy like you would say “because it was on sale or the cheapest” you showed us all how you could get something with very little and that is why I still watch you today! The build contractors ran into a perfect storm when they took on this project. There was a sufficient amount of rock on site to build a good solid retaining wall plus by removing the fill in one area and using it to transform another part of the yard needing privacy and security is absolute genius. The contractor saved a bundle on fuel with the short hauling distance, it was indeed a win win situation for everyone. Good luck DB/VGG! You don't have to remind us bro, we all know you are a humble guy, thanks for sharing and making it an interesting watch, looking forward to the rest of the build. On another note..., With present roof height, a fella might consider building an upper Mezzanine area on either end for storing parts, this will free up all kinds of wall and floor space, more elbow room on ground level for wobble pops, swinging ratchets and whatnots, .

Do are least 4"×6" post, 6"×6" would be better. How you can probably buy laminate posts, (laminated treated on the bottom spf the rest of the way) cheaper than treated and straighter. I built poll barns in Michigan for 22 years. you can get your overhead door tracks to go farther up the wall (high lift kit) and even to follow the pitch inside the roofline. Gets them up out of the way, might be helpful with those Wildfire lifts that you can move around

I can't believe they didn't use treated lumber in the old part, and that asphalt is so thin like you said. Do it right the first time, you got that right. I even used pressure treated lumber for my shed. Hard to believe that older part is only 14 year's old. I have a 2 1/2 car barn, with an upstairs, and thick cement. I believe it was built in 1986, but it was built with treated lumber. My grandpa always taught me that if you build, do it right once, and do it right, or you will be patching or doing it over. I saw a video where some tweaker stole from you, know it was a few week's ago, but sorry anyone would do that to such a kind and giving family like you and your family. I hope they caught them, because being robbed really violates you in a personal way, and I've been there. When you don't know if it's a tweaker trying to get money for the next high, a fan a bit far out there, a casual stranger that just saw your stuff outside and helped themselves, or a guy needing a psrt. No matter what the issue, they could have asked for your help. I hope you have some good security, because Jessica and the boy's will feel safer when you are away. God bless.

The asphalt was thin but asphalt gets most of its strength from the underlying well draining aggregate base. Asphalt needs a seal coat about every 7 years to lengthen its life. Sadly now VGG has to deal with poor drainage on the entire site because the initial construction failed to design for good drainage.

I don't know much about buildings, but I helped my pop put up a 20x30, using pressure-treated 6x6's stuck into concrete. That was in '91 and it's still solid as a rock and it has taken some major wind and snow abuse over the decades.

Derek I just had a great idea for a video series. Once the barn is finished, you know you're gonna need to acquire a few more vehicles to fill it up, right? Well my idea is the 'Sea to Shining Sea' series. Basically you pick up a car, sight unseen, from the four corners of the USA and drive them all back to Tennessee. We're talking Maine, Key West, San Diego, Seattle (or Alaska if you really want to up the ante). And if you want to extend the series you could add on a car from each state - would absolutely love to follow those journeys!

That excavator operator has a real nice touch and pretty good smarts as to what material to put where. It's obvious, even at this early stage, that a ton of skull sweat has gone into this project. This has been a pleasure to watch.

I believe you (and J. Beer & Sons) are some of just a very few honest, modest and humble (& humorous) people on YT. That early part of this video, where the excavator is working in time-lapsed (fast motion) video, looks like a sentient creature (an intelligent robot dinosaur). That operator is very skilled. Maybe he played a lot of video games as a young boy and learned to become an integral part of the machine.
