@Jason Tan Mojang is actively hostile towards the community on the recent issue of chat reporting, pretending to care about feedback but completely ignoring any. They also belittle modders when much of their game has been created or inspired by them. Mojang at one point was a studio standing up for its gamers, but that has long since shifted to the opposite.

Here's the best part that nobody is understanding: The world features that are tied to a seed rely on the generator code which changes each time Minecraft updates. What this means is, when the game updates, the generator will change so much that the seeds will eventually generate entirely different worlds (invalidating the NFTs). These are the worst kinds of NFTs because _they won't even work after a few years!_

I mean Mojang/Microsoft is already partially digging their own grave with an upcoming update to Java (basically, global chat moderation, someone reports a message of yours to Mojang mods and you might get yeeted off _all_ of multiplayer), but I think Mojang sees NFTs as the more crucial thing to worry about for now (and frankly I agree with their notion, as negative as the update is looking to be) - Bedrock players already have to deal with chat/text moderation, so they aren't necessarily gonna lose that part of the player-base to the update, but being even just _neutral_ about NFTs could impact the whole shebang

Due to the nature of how much WorldGen can change from update to update. In a few versions, those seeds won't even give the "owner" the world they bought anymore unless they play on a specific version. So they're getting ripped off if they're buying the NFT for the actual seed.
@BKPrice
@BKPrice 2 жыл бұрын
And they're probably not buying it for the actual seed. They're buying it for the magical "receipt" which, in their eyes, is the only value they need. People will pay thousands to buy the receipt irrespective of what it points to. It's basically like selling your farts without even trying to capture them. People can "own" the air particles that came out of your ass, but can't really do anything with them, and for some reason they don't care and are able to sucker other people into paying even more for this air that has long since dissipated, because it was never about the fart. It was always about the receipt, the ownership of some imaginary exclusivity.

However Mojang ultimately has control over everything Minecraft and are within their rights to say "you can't sell this." Also, exclusivity / speculation / FOMO sales should be kept away from children, period.

The more I hear about how these "web3 projects" operate, the more I understand the statement that crypto's existing philosophy is to starve public service. These people think that the way to move society forward is to monetize everything, turn everything in our life into a stock market where you'll have a chance to profit off all of it, to them unmonetized public resource is a backwards way of doing things that they can't fathom other people actually wanting, because to them free public service have no way to "retain value". These are some of the most toxic brainworms I've ever seen in people, and I'm horrified of the future that they're trying to make happen.

@@sunnydong9069 You know what the real sad truth is? I think that a lot of that is actually just obfuscation. Like, that's an overcomplicated take of what is, in reality, very simple. NFTs, Web3, crypto in general, the whole thing is just a sham, a facade, and smokescreen designed to try and disguise what is in essence, just the same old tired pyramid scheme scam as always. Someone wants to sell you nothing, and if you buy it, you need to push it onto others, so you can sell it and get out. And they then need to push it and sell it to get their money and get out. It's all just the most intentionally overcomplicated nonsense, to trick people into thinking there's some 'thing' of substance happening here, when it's just a pyramid scheme.

@Sheevlord
@Sheevlord 2 жыл бұрын
Ahahahaha, holy crap! They really went there! When I thought that NFTs can't get any more lazy and low effort they literally started selling random numbers. The whole thing is a fractal of stupidity. Not only is the whole concept in general silly beyond measure, but every part of it is idiotic. Where do I even begin? With a disclaimer, apparently. I feel like I should admit that I don't play Minecraft (not a fan of directionless sandbox games). Having said that, I feel that I understand how it works just well enough to comment on this issue. If I happen to say something factually wrong - feel free to correct me. So, problem #1. Minecraft seeds have no intrinsic value. Why would anyone (except for people with a terminal stage of brain NFTosis) buy a seed? A seed is just a number used to initialize the procedural generator of the world. So generally speaking any seed is as valuable as any other. Sure - some specific seeds might produce unusual worlds and therefore have some perceived value, but I don't think that these seeds sold as NFTs were chosen for any specific reason. Problem #2. Seeds are no scarce. Not even close. A seed is a 64 bit integer, meaning that there are 18 quintillion (and some change) possible seeds. What is the point of buying them if the supply outweighs demand to an absurd degree? Moreover, there is no way for these unaffiliated randos to prevent others from using the seeds they are selling. I'm pretty sure that you can't even copyright a seed - it's not a creative work. It's a random number spewed out by your PC. This also means that if Mojang didn't shut down this party then someone else could start minting seed NFTs and undercut their prices. Problem #3. When devs change the way their world generation works they break compatibility, meaning that the same seed will produce a drastically different world in the new version. Problem #4. What does it even mean to "own" a seed? What did these people buy exactly? What possible benefit is there to "own" some random seed that is functionally equivalent to any other seed? I wish I could say that I am surprised that so many people bought these NFTs but I am not. There is no idea too stupid for NFT enthusiasts.
@Azzaciel
@Azzaciel 2 жыл бұрын
There's an even bigger joke there. You saw that seeds had some tags, right? like land vs water surface area? Any single Minecraft world is so friggin massive, that if you are looking for X thing, your world will have it, you just have to find it. And from the looks of it, they just set the "world" for their fancy pngs to only show X amount of blocks in each direction from that seeds spawnpoint and tagged it according to what can be seen in that area. We're talking about each seed having around 4 billion square KILOmeters of usable area, where 1 block represents 1 meter. For a frame of reference, Earth has a surface area of 1/8th of a minecraft world. By sheer sense of scale, only the seeds that interact with the worldgen in wierd ways, like looping certain features, will have any significant deviation of every seed having statistically the same % of resources.

There is no such thing as NFT/Blockchain gaming. The entire point of the blockchain is its decentralized nature, and video games more complex than a text adventure are never going to run on a blockchain, they will always run on centralized servers which makes the entire concept of "true ownership" null and void. Like yeah, you can own an NFT of some legendary sword, but I as the game dev can still take the sword away from your ingame account that runs on my server, rendering your NFT completely pointless. Play-to-earn and selling ingame assets for real money is all possible in traditional games, there's just a reason nobody does it. It's a scam from beginning to end, the concept has no future, and if anyone truly believes that blockchain gaming is the next big thing they're delusional.
@jonathanfaber3291
@jonathanfaber3291 2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the other problem: being decentralized means that outside of that one game (and maybe any sequels they decide to make for whatever reason) it has exactly 0 value, so it’s only useful to the people who already have it, and who only go to these games to pay-to-earn, which means they only sell and never buy, which collapses the market as a fact of reality. These things will never be anything except a scam or just absurdly bad investment, even for crypto/NFTs

What I find particularly funny is how quite a few of the attributes these worlds have, which are supposed to make them unique are either common factors for all Minecraft worlds (Salmons, Ship Wrecks and being Multi-Climate, etc) or are not a feature of vanilla Minecraft (Monsoons, Underground Villages and Oil Fields, etc). Not to mention, that these seeds aren't exactly super hard to reverse engineer without buying the NFT. I mean, people have figured out the seed for the original pack png image and deduced the Hermitcraft Season 9 seed based on seeing a tiny cluster of nether roof bedrock with coordinates shown. A rougly 370 x 370 area around spawn, like shown in the collection, is probably easy mode by comparison.

It's not the innovation that's gone, it's the public selling of stolen and repackaged assets that's gone.

Minecraft isn't in the best spot right now, 1.19 didn't go over well with delayed features and 1.19.1 is looking to really mess with Java Edition servers with the chat reporting stuff, but this at the very least is a win. It's a HUGE power move when the single most successful game of all time pretty much condemns NFTs and crypto in its current state, and I can't help but respect Mojang's common sense here when so many other Triple A developers are money hungry enough to embed NFTs into their games (Ubisoft why are you like this). I saw someone say something along the lines of "This is just like when people tried banning books, it just makes everyone want to get into it even more" and I just don't understand the logic there because you can actually gain something from reading a book while buying NFTs has like a .01% chance at best of making even a cent of profit for the average person. Minecraft is the most successful game ever. It does not need to do anything other than provide more updates every year-ish to continue to be the most successful game ever. Mojang understands that and I can only hope Microsoft does as well. also you can EASILY tell how little these people care about Minecraft, at 11:03 they say "Minecraft studio" instead of Mojang when literally the first thing you see when starting up ANY version of Minecraft is the Mojang logo, I guarantee you these guys have never played Minecraft in their life

Or are these like custom maps with extra content such as buildings or dungeons to explore kind of like mods but turned into an NFT for some reason? Regardless of which it is I genuinely don't understand why anyone would want this. Minecraft has had endless world and seeds along side amazing mods for over a decade.

The best part of this is that what you store on the block chain is public, the secret part is just the key required to move ownership of it, so you should in theory be able to find the seed of any of these worlds from inspecting the block chain. The delusion runs deep in the WRLD community... even if MS and Mojang decided to include NFTs, and even if for some reason they would take away a core mechanic of the game and replace it with NFTs, instead of adding something actually new... What on earth would make anyone think that WRLD would be the company they would go with? MS would get nothing from that deal and would have to fulfil obligations made to people who had not paid anything to MS for doing that. Crypto and NFTs could have their place, but people would have to start thinking about them logically first.

I just want to point out I hear people just lump all the decentralised "technologies" like web3 etc as bad based on the NFT etc crowd. The reason I point this out is that there are many applications that aren't remotely on the forefront that most people don't know are being used because they aren't news worthy. That is why I kind of die inside as a developer whenever I hear people lump it all together. For example, I am working on video sharing site, and it is only possible because of the seriously cheap storage not owned by a single company from a decentralised storage infrastructure. It's the fact that I can work on something that can handle petabytes of storage without breaking the bank and the need of selling out to financially bootstrap the whole thing to even just get started. I think this is just one of the advantages that almost no one knows about because it's not flashy and no need to cover it and gets completely overshadowed by the crazy and pathetic uses of a lot of these technologies. This is just one of which I am using, I am pretty sure there is others. Even though I fully disagree with whatever these people are doing, the constant negative coverage does stifle innovation on something that allows people with almost nothing to build things with. I understand the downsides (that is a seperate discussion because I have just included all of these technologies under a single ambarella) but the point is, I don't have to rely on Google or Amazon and that to me is pretty good. Because right now we are very close to a monopoly if not already there on online data storage services for developers, which is literally only Google, MS and Amazon.

So far, what i got out of NFTs is that they make something digital, which needs to be "developed" but not produced per piece and yet some people want to make it scarce as if it was made per piece and what makes it scarce isn't even the product (like the image) itself, just the string behind it, telling you its yours. The funny thing about this is, hashing out Mine* world seeds or *craft world seeds, curating them, and selling that information, seems like an acceptable art project to me. Figuring out world seeds that would work best for a fixed-seed speedrun, for instance; or that have interesting or semi-unique material caches or mob groups. I could see plunking down a few bucks and saying, “Thank you for your effort”, and then having sold that one interesting seed, they stop selling it, and I can then advertise that I have a server with a unique seed. That sounds like the same process here, except that my intention is to use the thing which I have paid for, and don’t believe I “own” it.

What Callum didn't go into is that it's not specifically selling the seed, it seems they believe that a minecraft server constitutes a metaverse, and by buying one of 'their worlds' then you can build a metaverse on their 'connected, multi-metaverse system'. Other gems that truly show that they 'really' know what they are doing. They claim to have a 'portal system' that lets people travel to different 'worlds'(hereafter referred to what they actually are servers), now normally that wouldn't be that big of an idea and is possible, except for the fact that the server owner is able to add in mods which, I quote, "allows popular Minecraft games like "Hunger Games", First person shooter mods, RPG type mods, and pretty much anything you can imagine." Which to anyone not in the know, mod changes require game restarts along with needing the mods to be downloaded in the first place, additionally, minecraft does not have a smart mod loading system so any .jars placed in the mods folder will be loaded. So to switch to a server with a different mod load order, you would need to quit the game, change the contents of the mods folder, restart the game, and then load into the server. Additionally, they claim to have "a packet bridging layer that allows cross-platform play between Minecraft Java edition & Bedrock edition." Which makes 0 sense especially since they admit that they require mods to be installed(what I talked about above was the fact that the server owner could add additional mods) where as bedrock edition has add-ons instead of mods and they are 2 different things.

I find this hilarious, there's so many seeds it's basically infinite, a single seeds holds no value except in some extreme edge cases where it might be used for something like speedrunning within the set seed catagory (for example a seed with a village at spawn and an end portal with 12 eyes pre filled in), you have to show yourself setting the seed and world settings at the start of a submission to be valid anyways so they would become public if you were to ever use these. These seeds however are extremely rare and that's not the seeds they are selling, the seeds they sell are totally random seeds to which you can find a very close equivalent to within probably less than 10 minutes of searching so unless you value your time at 15 thousand dollars an hour these are useless. There's even programs to reverse engineer a seed if you so desperatly want the exact one they list which can get the seed from this render they conveniently show on their site, this is basically the equivalent of right click saving an nft. The only people buying these are crypto bros who have way too much money and think this has value because minecraft is so popular. Skins are equally stupid as someone can just go to your username on a site like namemc and dowload your exact skin for free because skins are in the minecraft api.
