Hi Gregor. I had a question for you my friend. When the MP-Molds group buy was initiated, I purchased 2 of the molds. I purchased the .22 (5.52mm) and the .25 (6.35mm). I'm using a 24" LW barrel in my Air Force Condor. The barrel is choked. I'm positive that the choke negatively effects the accuracy of the slugs. It's subtle, but it's there. Well, I always though my barrel had a twist rate of 16:1, as that was the original twist rate for the AF barrels. Well, apparently their research has shown that a slower twist is better for pellets. So they have changed the twist rate from 1:16, to 1:17.7 (an additional 1.7). This completely changes the stability of the projectile when plugged in on the Berger Bullets Twist Rate Calculator. So here's what I want to do...... The current barrel I'm using has the following rifling characteristics (in .22 caliber): Bore Diameter: .215" (5.461mm) Groove Diamater: .221 (5.613mm) Twist rate 1:17.7 I want to purchase the un-choked LW barrel blank designed for the .22 hornet. These are the characteristics for that barrel Bore Diameter: .217" (5.512mm) Groove Diameter: .222 (5.638mm) Twist rate 1:15.4 So do you think the 5.52mm slugs would work in the new barrel, or do you think the diameter of the slugs is too small to make a sufficient seal in the barrel? What are the barrel characteristics of the Huben (bore and groove diameter)? I know the slugs are listed as 5.52mm, but there are a lot of characteristics and contours on the slug. In your video, you said that the 5.52mm slug that the front bands are 5.52mm. What is the diameter of the rear drive band (largest) that seals everything up? Is it 5.61mm or larger? Even if it's close, I can powder coat the slugs and compensate for the loose fit. Which could potentially also compensate for any superficial pitting or indentations from the casting process. Or do you think I need to just go with the 5.55mm mold if I'm going to be shooting the slugs from the .22 hornet barrel? If so, any idea when Miha is going to have a new batch of molds ready? Looks like they are sold out in every size! Also, do you think he will ever machine these molds in brass instead of aluminum? If so, I DEFINITELY want to get some of the brass models. Thanks again for your research and dedication to this project Gregor. I took my gun out to a ranch here in southern California about 3 weeks ago and annihilated some ground squirrels with the .25 slugs. Several were at the 100 yard mark, and they dropped in their tracks. But there were some VERY important lessons I learned about slugs..... I think there are actually 2 factors that negatively impact accuracy when using slugs. They are equally impactful, and equally important to try and overcome. Thankfully, you've already overcome one of them with the shape and design of these slugs. They have minimal friction and high BC making them very true in flight. But here's the second issue.... And I found it to be HUGE regarding accuracy. BARREL HARMONICS! Just the physics behind the slugs and using them in your air rifle will change the harmonic characteristics of the barrel. So for the people that aren't familiar with this term, barrel harmonics are the vibrations that transfer down the length of the barrel after the projectile has been pushed through it. You said yourself that these slugs are designed to be shout out of HIGH POWERED air rifles. I agree COMPLETELY! If you're shooting the .22 slugs, and your gun can't generate at least 75 FPE, go back to pellets. You need to push these pellets with AUTHORITY! They should be leaving the muzzle at 950 FPS or faster to achieve max stability in flight, and retain max energy downrange. The faster you can push them, the more stable they become in flight. But in order to push them faster, you need more energy through the tank and valve assembly. Well guess what happens when you push more energy through the barrel? You get more violent harmonics through the barrel. So in order to maintain good groups, you need to tame the harmonics. This may require some custom barrel bushings spread out along the length of the barrel to dampen the vibrations.... Here's what happened to me. When I first took the gun to the range, I couldn't even get good groups at 25 yards when sighting in my scope. After a frustrating 1.5 to 2 hours of dealing with this, I concluded that I was either going to have to switch back to pellets, or buy an un-choked barrel (which I still believe could only improve accuracy). I was shooting from a bench rest, and had the gun locked into place. So then I started using my buddy Jose's rifles. He has some fully custom big bore air rifles (2 in .257 and 1 in 9mm). I started shooting at targets downrange at 100 yards. Even with his gun, I was all over the place. He told me that he had just sighted in his rifles, and he sat down behind his gun and proceeded to fire off 3 rounds, all achieving 1 MOA at 100 yards. I looked at him and asked what I was doing wrong. He told me you have to really shoulder high energy airguns. At that moment, a light bulb went off in my head. So I got my gun back out, and within 5 shots had it accurately sighted in at 50 yards. I realized that by firmly shouldering the gun, I was dampening the barrel harmonics. I also realized that the last 18 inches of my barrel were kind of "free floating" in the aluminum housing of the Condor frame. So I fabricated a delrin barrel bushing that fits tightly around the barrel and slides firmly into the frame of the gun. So now I have 3 barrel bushings on the barrel. 2 of them within 6 inches of the breech, and one near the end at about 22 inches. I've yet to take the gun back out and test the theory, but I know for a FACT it's going to improve accuracy. I know this because I proved that by shouldering the gun, I was able to dampen barrel harmonics and thus improve accuracy DRAMATICALLY! And if I combine shouldering the gun in conjunction with the new barrel bushing at the end of the barrel, my group sizes should be cut in half (or more). So that would be my advice to your readers and subscribers. If you guys shot these slugs, and didn't get the accuracy you though you should get, go back out to the range and hold that stock tightly against your shoulder and try grouping again. I promise your accuracy will improve. Then inspect your gun/barrel configuration and figure out if there's a way to insert some of barrel bushing to tame the harmonics of your barrel. Then your accuracy will improve even more. Thanks again Gregor!

minimal friction has more to do with velocity than anything else. Gyroscopically-stabilized projectiles don't require any particular velocity to be stable; they require a minimum RPM, and that is a combination of velocity and rifling twist. It doesn't matter how fast you shoot the projectile, if the rifling can't stabilize it. Length of projectile vs its weight, balance, and diameter also has a huge role to play in stabilization. To Give everyone a hint: most air rifles are meant to shoot DRAG-STABILIZED diabolo pellets, so their twist rate is insufficient for bullets of any real weight. Choke Boring doesn't hurt accuracy, in some instances, it actually can improve it by conforming projectiles at the muzzle and offering some resistance to minimize FPS deviation. Most rifled barrels made today are not choked, because it was found that it wasn't enough of a difference in breech loading guns to warrant the extra cost associated with producing them. As far as barrel harmonics are concerned, "eliminating" or "taming' the whipping of the barrel seems to be a fantasy of air-gunners (look at the amount of "stuff" sold to do just that). You can never eliminate or deaden the whipping of the barrel on a gun to the point it doesn't affect where the projectile goes. The key to accuracy is finding a pressure/projectile combo that has the barrel whip around the same way, every time, so that the muzzle is pointing the same trajectory when the bullet leaves. You can slightly modify the gun by changing weight distribution in the barrel. Most Air gun barrels are not free floated, so the way the forearm is supported absolutely affects barrel harmonics. Shouldering the gun, on the other hand, has very little to do with harmonics, and far more to do with eye position; particularly as it pertains to sighting down sights or parallax in a scope. Inconsistent shouldering leads to inconsistent eye position, leading to inconsistent sighting. Basics of shooting any thing with a shoulder stock (crossbow, firearm, air-gun). A gun is a gun, doesn't matter if it uses powder or compressed air. As far as the end-user is concerned, everything that applies to firearms applies to air guns, and vice versa.

Amazing work done like always... Infact you have spoken my heart out... Pellets are best for short range specially residential areas but what if one has to go for long range hunt in wild.. Then slugs with a supporting powerful airgun is the way to go... Despite my extensive search, I was hardly able to find slugs with good BC and good BC means long range with a good airgun... I would say, you are changing the dimension of airgun shooting forever.. Keep up the marvellous work Gregor

Gregor, here in the US, 5 or 6 people have really been pushing the accuracy for slugs in AG' using .257 barrels form TJ's in 14/1 twist. RoachCree,, Duotat -100, tofazfou, KnifeMaker, Rifle-50 and JP. We have achieved stellar results. My .257, using NOE's .257/80 HP RanchDog design is capable of 1/2 moa at 100 yards, This is regularly repeatable. Very accurate, at 200 fpe.. One shooter, Rifle-50 has shot successfully, targets at well over 1100 yards with his .257 bench gun. Bullets are most definitely the future of AG's for long range and fpe. Hi Gregor..... I know you made this video a LONG time ago, but I had a question regarding the dimensions fo the MP-Molds slugs. Do you know the diameter of the largest drive band on each type of slug (5.52, 5.55, and 6.35mm)? The reason I ask is because I ordered new barrels for my rifle with faster twist rates from the Russian Federation. Well, the barrels are slightly different in diameter than the stock LW barrels I'm using. According to Alex (the manufacturer) the .25 barrels has a twist of 1:14", and the diameter of the lands and grooves is 6.35/6.5mm (.250/.2559 inches). If it's close, I can compensate with powder coating. I'm able to add .01 to .015 inched of diameter to the slugs by powder coating. The coating is thin enough that it doesn't impair the drive bands. The .22 barrel I bought is 610mm with a twist of 1:16 inches. The dimensions are 5.45/5.6mm (0.214/0.220). Do you think the 5.52 mold I have will work with these, or do you think I need to purchase the 5.55mm version? I guess I'm just looking for the dimensions of the largest drive band on each type of slug. Then I know that the band will make a proper seal against the grooves in the new barrel. On the NOE Bullet molds website they show the dimensions of every round. Thsnks Gregor. I'd go to MP-Molds, but the NEVR respond. They even removed the forum where we used to post.
@gregorkamensek39235 жыл бұрын
The .22 barrel will probably work best with 5,52 slugs but I would not advise to use 6,35 slugs in the barrel you are describing. Judging by dimensions, this is actually a .257 barre. I have on just like that form TJ and it does not shoot my slugs well... Mp mold slugs have the bigger band as follows: 5,52 has about 5,66 band; 5,55 has about 5,69 band and 6,35 has about 6,46 band. The problem with 6,35 will be that the smaller bands will not engage the lands as they are somewhere between 6,33 up to 6,35. I would advise to use .257 slugs / molds for that barrel. I assume you are not using this barrel in K1 .25 as it has the magazine sized to 6.46... I work with MP molds because it is a local company and I am very satisfied with their mold quality. I do not however influence their sales tactics... I am actual waiting for a new version of a mold that will be flat base, but I am not sure when it will be ready. I don't plan to make a size for .257 as there are a lot of option for this caliber already out. I mainly focus on slugs for Huben as K1 has some limitations and there are not a lot (or none) appropriate molds / slugs out there to fit.

@@gregorkamensek3923 Alex said he can make the barrel with 6.29-6.30mm lands and 6.45-6.46mm grooves. Do you think this would do well with the 6.35 slugs?
@gregorkamensek39235 жыл бұрын
@@trinitymaker5833 This should be the correct dimensions for the slugs, yes. But I think you should ask yourself one question: is it really worth making a barrel for the slug, usually it goes vice versa. Also, what is the gun that you would like to shoot it with? What is the power it can achieve?

I’ve been using a jig I made for my drill press to drill out a 1/8in deep hole centered in the rear of my boattail swaged slugs and in my rifle I picked up an extra 35fps to 40fps in speed from reducing weight very slightly but catching air better and the slug is still stable. Hard to say but those slugs require quite high twist rate so there is a chance that they will not be stable. I know for a fact that they are not stable in 1:28" twist but I never tried 1:20".

@@gregorkamensek3923 Have you established the reason for instability with the 1:28 twist? Is it the rear part of the slug, the boat tail? I've been thinking if that is the problem, the mold could be very carefully drilled to remove the boat tail and make a slightly heavier slug, or even go the other way and make the slug slightly lighter than 47gr (weight of standard slug) by carefully milling down the boat tail part of the mold and removing most of the boat tail section. I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at, right? I'd appreciate your thoughts...

@@redgum1340 Yes, the problem is definitely in boat tail. As a life long lead alloy bullet caster it is clear that the driving rings on your bullet should be filled with a bees wax/allox lube, or something similar, to prevent leading of the bore and increase accuracy and velocity. A simple lubrasizing die in a commercial hand press will do the job. Several companies sell these for hobby use. I’m happy to advise if interested. Tom

@gregorkamensek39236 ай бұрын
Hi. Yes, 1/10 linotype to pure lead is a good mix. That is what I most often use. Regarding twist, I would say the following: there is too much focus on the twist. It is true that you need to be in the correct ballpark to have good result but for slugs that can be loaded in K1 (max 11 mm length) 1/17 is more then enough. More important are correct dimensions and probably most important is forcing cone and also muzzle crown (but muzzle crown gets too much focus anyway...). I am guessing that is why you got better results with 1/12" twist. Also, K1 Chinese barrel does not have the best manufacturing quality...

@gregorkamensek39232 жыл бұрын
Typically, hollow point can be just as accurate and efficient (BC) as round nose. However if you do not hunt, I would stick to round nose as you don't need the hollow point. In terms of best BC possible, round nose with boat tail are the best solution but it can be challenging to get them to be accurate...

Great video. Air gun ammo has been needing accurate bullet ammo for years. What gun would you recommend at around 950 fps with the new bullet? I'm looking for something I can get around 40 shots in .22
@gregorkamensek39236 жыл бұрын
Hm, 40 shots is a lot for the power needed for to get the bullet to 950 fps. Huben will have about 35 shots but you need to fill it to 350 bars to get this shot count. You can fill it only up to 300 bars and you will probably get about 27 - 30 shots. For other guns I suggest you look for guns that are capable to push them .22 to 70 ft-lbs or .25 to 100 ft-lbs... and still high shot count...

It would be better is you asked Huben this question, but as far as I know, the first K1 V1 had LW standard airgun choked barrel with 450 mm twist. Every K1 after V1 has LW airgun choked barrel with 416 mm twist. The 5,52 slug preforms well in both these barrels (assuming the forcing cone on V1 is modified) and the 5,54 works well on both of these barrels as well as the custom barrel sold by Rojal. If fact, the custom barrel form Rojal worked more accurately with 5,54 as the original Huben slugs.

I do not know what to expect from the standard options, and also, most the slugs I use are homemade. I would suggest you try to find what is available locally (or at least on the same continent). In South Africa you can can find some slug manufacturers so you could test those in Daystate airguns... You might also contact Matt Dubber (from Hunting SA channel), he has a lot of experiences with slugs. Sorry that I am not able to help you more.

HI. Judging by calculations, all of those slugs that are shorter than 11 mm in .22 cal are perfectly stable in any barrel that has a twist faster than about 1:18". This means that all LW design barrel that are most common will stabilize tem without a problem, This also proved in my testes.

Ok Gregor....... Update on the .25 mold I own. I ran into a snag this weekend when casting. There's an old saying- "A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link." Well, I found the weak link in the chain regarding these molds. It's the shoulder bolts that hold the sprue plate in place. There are 2 of them. One of them is used to allow the sprue plate to pivot. The other has a steel t-collar around the shoulder that becomes a stop for the sprue plate. So here's what happened...... Each time I heat my mold and cast with it, I've noticed the hex head shoulder bolt that the sprue plate pivots on works it's way loose. I realize that there's a very small set screw threaded in the side of the mold to help prevent this from happening, but it also works it's way loose with the expansion and contraction from heating. So at least once in the mold pouring process I would stop and tighten down the bolt and the set screw because I could see play in the sprue plate when it should have been sliding perfectly perpendicular to the top of the mold..... Well, the last time I tightened it down, the bolt sheared off at the shoulder. So I had the pleasure of drilling it out and re-tapping the hole to fix the threads. The reason this happened is because the heating of the mold to between 315-370 degrees C re-tempers the steel of the bolt and makes it softer than it was when it was new. So here's what I want to do..... I'm going to buy several of the shoulder bolts. If anyone is reading this...... Buy these bolts: Shoulder bolt... Hex head OR socket head M8 x M20 (8mm is the shoulder, 20mm is the length) The threads are M6 x 1.0 Buy several of these, and swap them out occasionally. Also, when you tighten the set screw that prevents the shoulder bolt from backing out, it will leave marks on the threads of the shoulder bolt. What I'm going to do is to grind the threads in this small area, and drill a small indentation on that flat spot that I grind. That way the set screw will actually recess into a socket in the shoulder bolt, and it won't BUDGE. Also, when you guys use sprue oil on your mold during casting, lubricate the pivot point where the sprue plate pivots on the shoulder bolt. But that was my experience.... If you guys own this mold, I would recommend you buy and do the aforementioned steps.
@gregorkamensek39235 жыл бұрын
I had a similar problem with the unscrewing of the bold because of the stretching of the material due to temperature changes. Mine is still OK but the spring washer that is pushing the plate down lost its tension, and I installed two of them instead of one and now it is like new again...

@@gregorkamensek3923 I was wrong about the dimensions of the bolt. This is what people will need to order to replace the existing one if it breaks. www.accu.co.uk/en/socket-shoulder-screws/436345-SSH-M6-8-7-A2-BL I think the stainless steel will hold up much better anyways.

I could not speak form experiences. All my barrels till now as LW as other barrels are not that widely available in EU. In case of Huben, I would say that the accuracy is more dependent on the slug and the fact if fires form the magazine. As long as you have LW barrel (choked airgun or LR), you will get good accuracy with correct slug.

Hi Gregor.... I wanted to report back to you regarding the performance of these slugs with my .25 air rifle. So here is my set up: AF Condor w/24" choked Lothar Walther barrel .5L 250 BAR CF air tank from Talon Tunes, Constant Air pressure regulator from PCP tunes (set to 190 BAR) Discovery Optics FFP scope Custom 1 piece Mad Dog rifle stock DonnyFL Ronin Suppressor When I fill the tank to 250 BAR, The preceding platform gives me an average muzzle velocity of 865 FPS with an extreme spread of 7 FPS for 18 to 19 shots before the reg drops off and the velocity starts to decrease. So last weekend I visited family in Bakersfield, California. My bro-in-law has 5.7 acres of land with a shooting range set up on it. He has targets set up at 25, 50, and 100 yard ranges. With the gun and barrel FULLY stabilized to eliminate barrel harmonics, I was achieving the following groups: 25 yards- hole in hole shots EVERY SHOT! I'm not kidding. They were hole in hole! 50 yards- 1/2" groups. No flyers. 100 yards- 1 MOA groups. I think I could have done better but there was some wind. My best shot of the trip was a head shot on a squirrel at 182 yards. I just couldn't believe how straight and true the slugs fly. One thing I think I could do to increase accuracy even more is to switch from a choked to an un-choked barrel. I think this could tighten my groups up significantly. But these slugs are AWESOME! I also found that my gun likes these slugs in pure, 100% soft lead. I poured the slugs in 3 different alloy blends 1. 100% lead 2. 97.5/2.5 lead/tin 3. 95/5 lead/tin Even the slight alloy blend didn't perform as well as the pure lead. I think the 97.5/2.5 blend would perform awesome in an un-choked barrel, but the choke at the end of my barrel mixed with the additional hardness of the alloy blend throws off the accuracy. I plan on buying an unchoked barrel in the very near future. But I though you would appreciate some feedback on these AMAZING slugs!
@gregorkamensek39235 жыл бұрын
WoW!!!. That is excellent. I really appreciate this feedback, as this slug was not properly tested before release (I am still waiting for K1 in .25). I was pretty sure that the design was right and that they should at least preform as well as the .22 version and I am very happy that it seems that they even outperform them. You are now the second person that I had direct feedback from and I really appreciate it. There is nothing better than to read a report like this and know that my work is appreciated :) Thanks!

@gregorkamensek39233 жыл бұрын
@@Bc-um9qx Hi. First, let me point out that those slugs are not appropriate for K1 version 2020 + because the barrels used in those guns have too slow twist rate. I explained this in the newer videos... I assume you have K1 in .25 cal since you are mentioning 210 bar max reg pressure. Huben has a self limiting valve design that peaks out at about 180 to 190 bars. This limiting design closes the valve faster when pressure is higher. The closing speed also depends on slug weight and friction - if the slug is heavier and/or has more friction, the valve will stay opened longer (this is why you should not use low pressure with heavy / high friction slugs as the valve will not close in time any you will get huge air dumps). So you will most likely not gain any power by going over 190 bars. Also keep in mind that Huben was designed initially for .22 cal and with .22 it can achieve amazing powers, but since they did not redesign the whole gun for .25, you will not gain the power proportionally to the caliber increase. In my test, I got only up to about 140 joules, so I would say that reasonable power setting is about 130 joules (for accuracy, efficiency,...).

@zansude895 жыл бұрын
