French Bread (makes 2 large loaves)
Dissolve 1 Tbsp. dry active yeast and 1-1/2 cups warm water together in a small bowl.
Meanwhile, combine in a large bowl:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. oil
Then, pour in yeast/water blend and mix well. The dough will be very stiff, but that's ok. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes, then stir it up again using a big, wooden spoon in a pulling motion. Repeat this process 5 more times until one complete hour has passed.
Grease two baking sheets and set aside. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and divide into two equal pieces. Roll each piece out into an oval shape using a rolling pin and additional flour if needed. Beginning on the longest side, roll the dough into a loaf. Then, pinch the seam and the tapered ends. Place dough on the baking sheet, seam side down. Slice 1/4" to 1/2" long diagonal slashes 4 times on the top of each loaf. Set loaves aside in a warm place and allow to rise for 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 25 minutes until loaves are a golden brown. Remove from oven, allow to cool slightly, slice, and enjoy!!!
Note: You can also make 12 rolls instead of the loaves!!
