Autism and ADD/ADHD go hand in hand more often than you might think. According to recent studies, 30-50% of autistic people also show signs of ADD/ADHD, and about two-thirds of people with ADD/ADHD also show signs of being autistic*.
This video is the first video in my series on Autism and ADHD, and today we’re exploring the 7 types of ADD according to Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen. If you’re interested in learning about whether or not you fit one of the 7 types of ADD, make sure you stick around until the end of the video because I’ll be showing you how to take a simple test online that can give you results today.
Keep in mind, these 7 types of ADD are not listed in the DSM-5, which many providers use to make a formal diagnosis. This exploration of Dr. Amen's work is more of an inquisitive look at how ADHD can present and is not a widely used set of criteria.

It is important to know that these types of ADHD are only used by Dr. Amen. The name ADD has not been used since the 1980’s. There are actually 3 official types of ADHD: inattentive, combined, and hyperactive. I am combined. I see myself in each of Dr. Amen’s types. I don’t know how I could possibly pick one or even a few of them. Before I was diagnosed, I took it upon myself to do whatever I could to be more functional, such as adjusting my diet. I used to think that something was very wrong with me. Now that I am diagnosed and treated, I feel so much better. I now realize that my dietary needs have more to do with hypermobile Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome (EDS is highly linked to autism and ADHD). It shouldn’t have taken so long to get relief and understand it isn’t because something I did or my parents did. I used to think that if I just changed my diet and lifestyle enough, I would be more “normal,” that it was my fault essentially. Dr. Amen adds to the conversation, but a lot of his approach is ableist and outside medical consensus unfortunately.

There is no such thing as scientific/medical consensus unless there is corruption and money to be made and / or protect. If people stop looking or asking questions, then no new answers are found. I personally resonate with the 4-temporal lobe and 6-ring of fire types, with a sprinkle in the others except type 7. That's not me, I'm far more complex than some type of anything, but if I want to better understand myself and what's going on in my head and in my body, I'm not limiting my understanding to what scientists who only agree with one another believe.

Hi, thanks for your comment it was like the last peace of my puzzle… after reading you I try to find info and it was a wow moment… I found an article linking EDS, ASD and autoimmunity and also talks about how those conditions link to higher risk for having autistic children… I have hyper mobile joints (I always suspected a connective tissue condition), I had Hashimoto thyroiditis (that went to thyroid cancer and finished in a total thyroidectomy)… I’m a self diagnosed ASD (and probably ADHD too 🥺) and I have a 13 yo daughter that was recently diagnosed with ASD. I feel like I could be the cover of this magazine… I am connecting the red wool to the pins and all points to me in the center… feeling a little overwhelmed.

HI Taylor, thanks for this video! I think that ADHD is still very misunderstood. There are still people out there that think it isn’t real. I think I have mentioned that I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 12 way back in 1971. At the time it was called Hyperkinetic Personality Disorder. It was believed to be a personality problem rather than neurological. It was also believed that most grow out of it. When I realized that I still had issues I was reevaluated in my twenties and was diagnosed with ADD. Of course the understanding and the name has been changed several times since in the DSM. It was ADD then ADD/ADHD and now, according to the DSM just ADHD with inattention or hyper activity or both. Dr Amen’s research sounds very interesting and can’t wait to read some of his work. As for exercise and diet, I completely agree with you of their importance. I went on a plant based diet 25 years ago as I have always had stomach issues. They completely went away after starting that diet so I have been on it ever since. It worked for me. I exercise daily and have for most of my life. It does clear my brain some and keeps me going. I have never taken any medication but I have friends that swear by. I do drink coffee all day long as it helps me focus. So I guess that’s my medication😂. Throughout my 60 plus years coffee has gone from poison to one of the most important things one can put in ones bodies. But since we are such complex and unique machines one mans poison is another mans cure, Your videos are so balanced and researched and I think they are important. I appreciate all that you do. Despite my age I am always learning and growing and your content adds to my continuing journey of discovery! Thank you!

Hi Bryan! I always love hearing more about your ADHD journey. You have learned a lot and I value your perspective. I’m so glad to hear that diet has made a significant change in your life. I swear by dietary changes as well, as I was able to grow my hair back after major hair loss, which was mostly due to dietary changes, from what I can fathom. Yes I have heard others with ADHD say coffee works well to help keep them mentally sharp. You are right in that our bodies are so vastly different from each other! Coffee makes me batty! Dr. Amen’s research has been really helpful for me, though you won’t find his diagnostic categories in the DSM. I just think they’re really interesting to explore! Always great to hear from you Bryan.

My mom had utilized his "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" with my ADHD (which was just dubbed as ADD at the time) when I was put on methylphenidate. I got the stereotypical "zombie" effects and lost a lot of creativity. I started taking a multivitamin and omega 3 fish oils with the medication and it did help quite a bit. I do have to say that I think that people in pharmaceutics should be trying and striving to minimize the negative effects of the medication as opposed to the people that need them being pushed into finding more loopholes. And don't get me wrong, I love the fact he detailed nutrients to benefit people taking these meds, I'm just saying there needs to be a lot more work on the negative side effects to avoid the additional work needed to function as a human.
@nirgunawish

if you get the zombie effects its not the right medication
@homelessrobot
@homelessrobot 5 ай бұрын
they do try to minimize the side effects, but a drug is not a computer program or a birdhouse. Its mostly a found object that you discover a purpose for, not a work of engineering you design for that purpose. I think the main thing is that practitioners need to know the diseases and treatment options well so that they aren't stranding a patient with a suboptimal solution when better ones exist. They also need to leave their hot takes at the door. You don't believe ADHD is real? You don't like medicating children? Seek alternative employment.

I am sorry to interject, I am sure that you think this is the right way of thinking, is dangerous. Firstly ADHD is not seven different types as stated in the dsm5 it is ADHD and yo are either inattentive or hyperactive or a combined type. Also Autism and ADHD are comorbid which is right, not a mental illness or should be associated as such. Also by your own talking points I get the feeling that you think that one or both can be cured by diet, it's not. It also sounds like this DR is pushing ABA therapy which is so bad for Autistic people. This video in my view further stigmatizes ADHD and Autism, OH the Nazi's who with he help of Hans Asperger where un aliving Autistic people who in there words were low functioning not a term the Autistic community uses, insted high support needs is what we use. if this DR was right the I would have all 7 and Autistic. I think that you heart is in the right place but the information from this book is Misinformation at best, maybe check out some autistic creators on KZbin like page layle or stephphanie Bethany or even Yo Samdy Sam. I come from a place were I was not accept as a perso with ADHD combined type and being Autistic, with bullying and some other very distastful stuff that humans can do to a child and a teenager. I just relly wish these people that firstl gaslight our experince and put us down for a disability they cannot see as just being lazy dumb or whatever the say I have herd most of it.

I agree. And on top of that, my problem was that a lot of people with multiple conditions like myself with ADHD as well as other things, can't exercise due to pain, can't avoid screens as I have to work/study from home, and I get sick from fish products and stimulants. I've found some great advice from HowToADHD here on KZbin, and her videos are really well organized and have lots of good tips for how to work with the differences that ADHD brains have, rather than trying to change them. I do find (non-stimulant) medication helps, but mostly because my chronic pain is too distracting already, and I'm in the last semester of my degree.

To be precise, I think she used words such as "improved greatly". Meanwhile this book she is talking about is probably older, because it uses add/adhd as terminology. Until recently people often believed that adhd will be cured when you grow up. The current DSM uses ADHD with three types as you described, and believes that it can't be cured. I identified with several descriptions in this video as well, and to me, they sound like adhd in reaction to different periods in life (some stressful), or with comorbidities. Many don't sound like something you would experience daily in a normal balanced life, or over long periods of time, unless you have some psychiatric condition (which can be common with adhd, because life is hard to navigate with it). There's nothing wrong with having psychiatric conditions and they shouldn't be stigmatized, either, but I think it's not too helpful to confuse them with an inherent condition like adhd. For example I think I had deppression for many years because of struggling with adhd symptoms and blaming myself for failure, like when I couldn't fall asleep and wake up on time, and couldn't stay awake in class, or when I couldn't keep friends and other kids ostracised me. My anxiety or depression symptoms in that situation existed with adhd, but were not part of it. Rather, they were a result of bullying and underachieving. Therefore when I started looking more into adhd, and found Jessica's channel, my deppression, which had until then been a yearly event, stopped emerging. By then I had thought that it was simply part of me, and I could not get rid of it. If I had come across this video before Jessica's, I could have believed that my distress is incurable - however it could be changed, sort of controlled, if I transformed my life completely. I think I had seen enough of self-help books like that for deppression and thought they were rubbish to exploit the circumstances of people who can't access official treatment. So... I can see why you suggest this might be dangerous. I think people should never trust a youtuber to help them, and youtubers should always encourage people to seek official help from a professional. KZbinrs can provide peer encouragement, but there's a limit to what they should help with. I think the line could be a bit trempled on in this one. There's context to be mentioned about how much altering your lifestyle is reasonable to some people.

social communication deficits with autistic people is mainly in *relation* to the NT's, because research has shown that experiments with groups of autistic people put together actually don't have a social deficit at all, and i'm sure your well aware that many of us *want* to socialize even if it is more of an effort. The NT's can also adapt far better to a social environment of autistic people than the other way around I would also say that if socialization goes well for us, it can be quite enjoyable but we have our limits, kind of like fitness training for fitness enthusiasts; while you may enjoy it, you do not want to overtrain, while such socialization for NT's is more like a brisk walk

Re dietary advice: It’s beneficial to differentiate between simple, refined carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. The simple, refined carbohydrates like sugar, white flour and white rice have had their fiber and nutrients stripped away. Complex carbohydrates like beans, fruit, root veggies, sweet potatoes, yams, whole grains and yes, even unadulterated white potatoes are very beneficial. Just don’t fry them or eat them with refined oils or animal fats. Complex carbs contain fiber, phytonutrients, protein and glucose…the brain’s and body’s preferred source of energy.

I wish i could get a brain scan. I was in special ed as a child in public school like 1st grade till 12th grade. I didnt know why the whole time other then I didn’t really like reading. It wasnt till my like 4th year of college I decided to find out why. Looking at my IEPs said I had language impairment learning disability come to find out that it is not a real reason to be in special ed. But now as an adult I still struggle with spelling and reading comprehension unless it is a subject i really want to know about. I think it was a lack of knowledge but now i know more about psychology I can help myself in ways I didn’t know before. I also had ear tubes as a baby/toddler so I wonder how much verbal communication I missed out on. But I get it because it is invisible disability something that other ppl cant see but I also have heard of ablism or that it can be used in a positive way like creativity. I think who I surround myself with also effects my mental health.

That was a great breakdown of ADHD/ADD. I didnt know that there were so many types. You may find the book Grain Brain interesting as well. It seems to line up with what the Doc is saying about carbs.

The 7 types of ADHD are actually the two classic ones inattentive and hyperactive plus 5 other diseases that mimic ADHD. Inattentive, hyperactive and combined will response to stimulants. Over focused type seams similar to Asperger’s now also part of autistic spectrum. Limbic type is basically thymic depression. Anxious type looks like mild general anxiety disorder. Ring of fire type looks like someone who is manic, hypomanic or paranoid . Limbic appears to be similar to ring of fire in symptoms but differentiates by what part of the brain is affected and how. To me this just a list of many different diseases that also share the symptoms of ADHD and for that reason they will not be treatable with stimulants. The doctor is treating classic ADHD types as a set of symptoms instead of a disease.Then he gives a different name to a known disease that has ADHD like symptoms. This is basically giving a name to a misdiagnosis. Example: “ 20 year old patients comes in saying he can’t concentrate he gets distracted this is making him fail his clases and he feels constantly depressed because of this” a psychiatrist might prescribe stimulants in this situations but let’s say he doesn’t feel like they work for him or gets worse then he might have thymic depression and for that reason he could not concentrate. This would be classified as limbic ADHD if using this list.

i like to call it HSFC, that is Hyperactive Shifting Focus Condition because that's much more accurate description of how our brains work and i hate the term 'disorder' and prefer the term *condition* because it's much more neutral

I always thought of myself as inattentive ADD, and in my early years that absolutely was the case, but... I also endured a lot of abuse from an alcoholic stepfather, so now I definitely fall into the overfocused category. The difference for me was the CPTSD 😵‍💫
@srldwg
@srldwg Жыл бұрын
@@Crithosceleg It is frustrating to have CPTSD. I was verbally and emotionally (a little physically) abused as a child and teenager. I thought that every problem that I had was due to that. Only to find ADHD and ASD were part of it. It is so helpful to know now knowing others like me can relate and we can support each other. It has also altered my psychiatric care drastically. Thank you for sharing you experience, and I'm sorry that you had to endure that awful abuse.

I'm wondering if a plant based diet would treat my Adhd (I noticed inattentive and anxiety) more effectively than methylphenidate, which helps but not a great deal). I'm going to try it. I was diagnosed with ADD in 1989, but my neurobiology PhD roommate said in 1983 that I reminded her of children that had the condition, which she was studying. I was held back in kindergarten due to "social retardation" (that's what they called it in 1959). But I had signs of ASD which gradually diminished until I was 14). But I am still making up for lost time communicating.

I'm not down-playing the role of food in our lives, and being plant-based is an awesome diet to consider (I've considered it myself), but I'm wondering if you have ever tried different medications for your ADHD other than methylphenidate? I have Inattentive type also, and have some general anxiety (probably related to trying to live with ADHD!) I also highly suspect that I have some degree of autism. The reason I ask about your medication is because I tried methylphenidate for a while and it did NOTHING for me, while Vyvanse and Adderall have been life changing. Our individual brains and genes are so different, and even though people with ADHD may have the same symptoms, one medication may work great for one person, and not at all for another. It’s worth trying different medications if one isn't really doing a whole lot for you... if that's something you haven't considered/tried already.

Sorry this is off topic, but I am in the throes of realizing I may be autistic as a 43 yo female. I have a dr appt soon and I am wary of my general practitioner (who I have never met) doubting my theory that I am autistic. Do GPs even bother listening and just refer you to a specialist or do I need to convince this person? I am in the phase where I am doubting my self-diagosis (even though it seems spot on) so I am fearful that I will accept a GP saying I am overreacting.
@MomontheSpectrum
@MomontheSpectrum 2 жыл бұрын
Not off topic at all! Here are my thoughts for what they’re worth…Of course each GP is going be vary and it depends on their background, what region they’re in, where their specialties lie…with that being said, unfortunately the odds seem to show that most GPs (at least those in my experience and those shared on the channel) are many times unaware or misinformed about the presentation of autism (especially level 1, esp in females). Totally depends on your situation but it might be helpful to ask your GP if they have anyone they can refer you to. Wouldn’t necessarily seek GP for any type of validation. I know embrace-autism.com does online evals by an autistic psychologist though I can’t 100% endorse them bc I have not personally been through the process.

I’ll be honest…I got the autism diagnosis but am now going back to see if I also have adhd. ADHD seems so whatever compared…like so unimportant compared to the autism diagnosis. So I’m kinda like ok so what if I do have adhd too? Do I really care ? At this point…i would roll my eyes at someone only diagnosed with adhd. Not to be mean..just …I feel like how bad can it really be to only be diagnosed with adhd.

🚩🚩🚩Um saying that caffeine is bad for people with ADHD is objectively incorrect. Caffeine Is a stimulant and is a great alternative for managing ADHD because it's side effects are a less intense version of what you would get with something like Adderall. It's also been shown multiple times that trying to treat psychological conditions with diet beyond maintaining a basically healthy body, is often pseudoscience.

Wait, his book is called 'Healing ADD'? *ADHD is not something to be healed...? I feel as though this is very reductive language and diminishes the adversity often faced by those with ADHD. We have enough people say, 'It's not real' or 'Everyone experiences those symptoms', without a celebrity Dr. also pushing something like this.

This sounds fake and gimmicky. My BS meters are going off the charts. It seems Dr. Amen is arbitrarily categorizing mental health symptoms in a very weird way. He takes the label “ADHD” and applies it to a wide range of conditions. At the same time, he takes many symptoms of ADHD and creates discrete categories for each. This is apparently supported by brain scans, which I am HIGHLY skeptical of, since we cannot categorize individuals based off of brain scans.

According to the test I don’t have ADD😂 hilarious! Then all the doctors must have been wrong. No seriously, I very much like your videos but this thing with 7 ADD types is scientifically incorrect- it is not backed up by any serious scientific study and guess who makes big bugs with suggesting you can make your life better if you only by into this program? Yeah…
