While I acknowledge and regret their suffering and loss, her parents had limited parenting skills. When a man twice as old as their 16-year-old daughter invites her on a folie a deux and her father waffles, he lost their daughter.
@lyndastarwriter Жыл бұрын
Possibly. Consider the protestation of a 16 year old girl - WE have no idea how the dynamics played out in their otherwise peaceful household. Throw a man, love, and a teenager in the mix and the parents don't stand a chance - for they don't KNOW anything...and even if they did, teenagers, in general defer to complete strangers and questionable friends..
@aprilshowers76911 ай бұрын
At age 16 the only thing that waffles is the legal system. Here in the U.S. police really don't persue when someone that age wants to be with an adult. They bring them back to their parents a time or two and then throw their hand in the air with situation. The parents can file a lengthy court proceeding, then by then the child is almost 17. Older teenagers are tricky and not always a slam dunk in the courts.
@davidc3839 Жыл бұрын
As the parent of a sixteen-year-old, you should say, no. My daughter is now 20 and well-adjusted. We as parents loved her and set reasonable boundaries. We also had consequences - no spanking, that is just abuse but consequences if she seriously overstepped the rules. You are the parent of your child and you set the rules. She was too young to go away with a man of that age at 16. If my adult daughter was missing I would be at the police station every day until they did something. I would not be so passive. I feel dreadfully sorry for the father who wanted to believe the best in people. Gary should have got a minium of 30 years. What an utter schemer and loser.
@NerdyWyRm Жыл бұрын
That is awfully judgmental. If someone is of age or nearly so, what is a parent to supposed to do without pushing them even further (and more quickly) into the arms of someone who has given no outright signs of abuse, etc. Just saying.

She wasn't quite 16 as her father said "coming up for 16" so yes I agree with you 100%. No way would I have let my teenage daughter go anywhere with a man, let alone go to another country! Teenagers need boundaries and its the job of parents to provide them.
@davidc3839 Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more. I spent my career as a social worker and the problem children were the ones who had been brought up with poor parenting. Children need to be loved and to have a structured life where there are clear boundaries. Of course, they break those boundaries and that is part of learning. At worst I put my daughter's toys or phone in the loft. I used to work with children who had been given no guidance or boundaries and they struggled in life. I’m confused about the divorce settlement 🤔 Where I come from (Sweden) if you’re married, your assets are split 50/50 unless there is a prenuptial agreement. If the house was worth 400 000 pounds, then he owed her 200 000, whether he sold it or not, and half of whatever his guitar collection was worth. In court, she would have been granted this - or at least 300 000 pounds, plus the value of cars, furniture etc etc, in addition to child support. I don’t see how he could get away with offering her just 45 000?

In the US, you can offer what you like and the other party can either accept or counter-offer to begin negotiations. A lot of times, acceptance of the original offer is the fastest way to get it over and done. If you can't reach an agreement, the court will recommend mediation and then you can go to court for the judge to decide what's fair.

Victim blaming, much!? Really, you should just pat yourself on the back for being so bloody self-righteous! Especially as you obviously have no CONCEIVABLE idea what this woman's life was about. It's sooo easy to be a "keyboard warrior!" I can almost guarantee 💯 that you wouldn't have the guts to speak this way, face to face! How about you learn to "walk a mile" in someone else's boots, BEFORE you condemn their actions!? Learning not to speak ill of the dead AND aspiring to have a bit of empathy might just make YOU a more sympathetic person ... don't you think?? 😠😠😠

@@kerrylevey8746 your weakness is showing. You can save the half assed attempt at gaslighting for someone who cares. You bring no argument. You bring no facts. Your entire rant is purely emotion. It does nothing to disprove anything I said. Those of us who don't have the luxury of an entire system built to allow us to avoid accountability for our choices understand that every one of those choices come at a cost. That is exactly why using logic and reason to make rational and informed decisions is so important. If she was being logical she wouldn't have married or started a family with a man who proved he wasn't stable. She had every choice in the situation and continually made poor ones. She didn't deserve what happened to her but every choice she made increased the probability of something terrible happening when that bill she couldn't avoid came due. You call it victim blaming. I call it holding her accountable for her own choices.

No, it was 18 years then they took 2 years off on appeal. However, it's Life with a _minimum_ of 16 years, which means he will have to go before the parole board - release is not automatic.
