Weirdly enough, I don’t think it could be a Sonic reference, despite Dr. Eggman/Robotnik existing back then. He was primarily referred to as Robotnik, though he was supposedly given the name Eggman in Japan, rather than it being an American localization thing. Just saying, “Eggman” sounds pretty Western/English. Or both Sonic and Earthbound took inspiration from The Beatles at roughly the same time.

There is no song in the _EarthBound_ soundtrack called "But Somethin', Will Ya". That's a fan title someone came up with when creating titles for the SPC rip of the game's soundtrack. The same piece of music was called "Humoresque of a Little Dog" on one of the albums that came after the release of the first _Mother_ game. That is the correct title or at least closer to the title for the song within _EarthBound._

Awesome video! One thing though, I think the reason the early screenshots look wider is because they were stretched to 4:3, while your gameplay uses 8:7, which is the AR of the SNES when using square pixels (5:59 is a good example).

I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the character named Shige-chan is more than likely a reference to Shigesato Itoi himself. He worked as a miner for a while doing excavations and the sprite even looks a bit like him.

Fascinating info here! I really wish some of those scrapped ideas could have made it into the final game, and I'm very curious as to what Fiverent would have been like. I must assume that most of the scrapped content was do to cartridge limitations. If the game was ever remade, I'd love to see it be more like the original vision of the game with that stuff finally included.

The PSI powers levels are Greek letters. So a is Alpha, b is beta, y is Gamma, E is Sigma, etc. My guess about the Giygas Debug menu trick is it was a place holder for the infamous save file deletion copy protection method before finalizing that. For the Ness's Mom sitting sprite, they might have planned for her to be sitting at the table. I think there is a rethemed version of Strong in Summers called the Overzealous Cop. I am guessing the lizard could be a member of the Tenda tribe. Outside of the dinos in Lost Underworld, those are probably the only NPCs that look like lizards.

When you're going over the names around 28 minutes in, most of the women are named after Twin Peaks characters. Lucy, Donna, Catherine, Audrey, and Josie.
