Moon bear cubs rescued in Laos

Sixteen undernourished Asiatic black bear cubs have been found in a home in the Laotian capital Vientiane by a conservation charity on March 19, 2024, in what was the largest rescue of the year. Moon bears, as they are also known due to the crescent moon-shape on their chest, are classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of endangered species. Thousands are kept as pets or farmed to extract their bile in the region for use in costly traditional medicine.

The "real buyer" is likely somebody that runs a bear bile farm in Vietnam or China. The demand comes from the "Traditional Chinese Medicine" industry, and bear bile farms are legal in China.

Protection is needed for 🐻 bears from illegal poachers who solely to obtain for the meat which will be exported to Japan where bear meat consumption is highest in northern Japan, they even have bear meat vending machines.
