Even in the "everyday" routine, we're shown "Steven" goes in and out and is used to it. Isaac changes his face ever so slightly. "Marc" hits the tape basket. "Steven" misses the tape basket. You could watch this a hundred times and find some new nuance with each viewing.

Yeah, switches can happen very very quickly, sometimes. And with the amnesia Steven experiences he wouldn't know they had even happened! Very quick switching back and forth is usually called rapid switching but it's usually very involuntary and can be distressing because the person is usually very very dissociated while it is happening. But yeah, Steven could be loosing seconds or a minute or two of time throughout his day and easily not notice.

Marc probably left in the morning without feeding the fish. By the time he got back, saw it was dead, so he went to replace it. Good to know Marc has been taking care of Steven, even replacing all of his "security measures" to make him feel safe.

@@StopReadingMyNameOrElse It takes way longer than that for a fish to die from lack of food. Also, fish eat all sorts of other things in the tank like algae or their own excrement. Especially nasty bottom feeders like goldfish.

I'm going into this blind as well don't even know much of Moon Knight, but it caught my attention and interest in the first episode. Love how Steven blacked out and wakes up makes us the viewer asking what happen loved that about it. I can't wait to see it all unfold. Love the reaction! Can't wait to watch Episode 2!

I've always liked Moon Knight as a comic book character, he has always had mental health issues specifically dissociative identity disorder. I feel like Marvel has been tackling more of the mental health struggles of our heroes in their TV offerings and I'm all for it.

going in blind into the show is definitely the best way to enjoy it, but i can see how some people may be confused about the DID (dissociative identity disorder) part of the character. I recommend doing some more research on the disorder before watching the rest of the series, because it does get pretty difficult to understand for people who don't know much about DID and the stuff surrounding it. great video and looking forward to more!

When I was 16 I was diagnosed with narcolepsy but have had it my whole life and Isaac is capturing the confusion and struggles people with sleeping disorders have real well, I've always mixed dreams with real life and suffered hallucinations falling and coming out of sleep and sleep attacks randomly through out the day, I can't wait for more 🔥🔥🔥 (hopefully he gets another deal with marvel holy cow)

I mean...he THINKS he has a sleep disorder. But he really has a dissociative disorder. I guess both can come with a LOT of confusion. He isn't hallucinating; he's dissociating. That's kinda the one gripe I have with the first ep...the dissociating really visually looks like hallucinating...and they AREN'T the same thing.

That was a LOT of fun. Marie and I really enjoy watching your reactions to these shows. It is also good that you know NOTHING about the property. Pure reactions. My wife loves horror and I'm the one that doesn't. I flinch at jump scares, too. We like the confusion of Steven, for he is our avenue to the character (he's us) and as he is figuring it out, so are we (hopefully). We will be back each week to see your reaction. I think we'll do the same thing we've done in the past on these shows. Next week, we will rewatch ep. one right before ep. 2 releases...so it is a continuous flow (mini binge). If it had released the entire season at once, we would've binged the entire thing in one sitting. BUT, to have the "water cooler" moment at work (or online) we have to have the weekly release schedule (which reactors like yourself would rather have for filming reasons). Another great reaction. Since this may never be part of the MCU in movies, and probably won't, you might be intetested to know that Moon Night was a member of Hawkeye's West Coast Avengers along with Wanda, Vision, USAgent, War Machine (Rhodie) and Kate Bishop. Hawkeye's wife was also a member by the name of Mockingbird and if you watched the movie Avengers Age of Ultron you would have seen her symbol on a watch.

Moon Knight has dissociative identity disorder. Originally in the comics, Steven Grant was a billionaire businessman, but here they changed it, which worked fine, but who knows what will happen later on in the show. Marc Spector is a mercenary and the main persona introduced in the comics and the one who got his powers from Konshu, the egyptian moon god, who even choosed Marc to become his "knight" (hence the name Moon Knight ;). There's more to the story, but I'm pretty sure we will see it in the show ;) =) Yes, that is Ethan Hawke as the cult leader (who ironically based his performance on an actual real life cult leader named David Koresh).

I know I'm months late, but you didn't miss out on anything by not watching the trailer. They did a great job with trailers this time. It was mostly all content from the 1st episode, and left everything else as a mystery.

This was a good way of showing how involuntary alter changes are. For what I know about DiD, you can really lose days even when one of you alters decides to front. Seems Steven is a fairly new-ish alter so whatever happened to Marc to make Steven take over for so long must’ve pretty large trauma (which alters are born/created which is through Massive trauma). I appreciate the fact they (the host and alters) Haven’t made an “Evil” alter yet. Again DiD is about managing trauma not causing it. Yes, some alters (known as Protecters) can be rougher on the outside ( aka in front while the host is in the mind). But, never straight-up causing problems on purpose only to protect the host and the other alters. And Marc is the host as for Steven he is the one who is the most out aka in front so he can have some social life.

DID forms from considerable (prolonged/repeated childhood) trauma, but alters can form after that for various reasons, including stress or changing circumstances. It's possible that Steven may have formed simply to fill a certain function in the system, or that he may have existed in dormancy for a long time and surfaced a few months ago because the then-current situation seemed safe enough for the subconscious mechanisms to let him. A new host doesn't necessarily need to mean recent trauma; it can also be the result of a *less* chaotic living situation, especially considering the apparent previous host seems to have had a very active fight mode while the new one doesn't. It's also possible that there's another (social) alter named Scotty, which would explain why the museum guard called Steven by that name repeatedly, and how someone got asked out on a date which Marc didn't go to while apparently in control.

@@Swenglish It seems like the sleep deprivation might be making it harder for Mark to stay in control. During the chase scene, Steven seems to wake up every time there is a loud noise, like the gunshot, or a car crashing into something. He first woke up after falling from a window, I assume, dislocating his jaw? He also woke up after fighting the people trying to take the scarab from Mark. Or, maybe a concussion from the fall is making it difficult for Mark to stay in control? Regardless, loud noises seem to be triggering the personality shift.

@@TroubleSturm That is possible, but keep also in mind that DID is a response to complex PTSD. It could be that the traumatic violence is becoming too much for Marc, and that's what's triggering *him* to dissociate, so someone else has to take the wheel, so to speak, and that's where Steven comes in. Steven seems to be someone who's very conflict-avoidant (we even see that with the salesman blocking his entrance), so he could function as, sort of, the system's protector against Marc's violent lifestyle. Someone to keep them away from it. To not make a fuss, to run away, to throw the gun, to just live a quiet life working at the museum. Which makes sense with how Khonshu views him as a parasite, an idiot and just an overall nuisance, since it's in Khonshu's interest to keep Marc on a path of violence. Marc isn't just a passive character, he may exist for the *purpose* of saving the system from violence (which is not to say that this will always be convenient or work out, as it's kind of an instinctive thing). Which also makes sense with him being a vegan, as someone with an aversion to causing harm.

Oscar Issacs is incredibly in this! Likable, pitiable, and funny. I too don’t know much about Moon Knight as a character, I was much more into DC comics when I was a lad (though I did read a fair share of Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and X-Men). I did however read two or three Moon Knight stories back in the day and thought he was a cool looking and awesome character. He seemed a bit of an amalgamation of some of my favorite DC characters: Batman, Captain Marvel (know known as Shazam for legal purposes), The Spectre, and Dr. Fate. So I’m really stoked to learn more about him in this MCU/Disney+ context. Looking forward to your weekly reaction! Excelsior!!!

Think of Steven as a personality that was developed, rather than the host identity. Mark is the host identity. For whatever reason, Mark created the Steven persona for reasons I won't spoil. Also, notice how the girl in the beginning makes Steven question if he's dead?

I am not the biggest Moon Knight expert but the version I am most familiar is from the 70's who began as the enemy of Jack Russell, the Werewolf By Night. He was Marc Spector, a soldier of fortune (or mercenary as Arthur labeled him in this episode) who was was resurrected by Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. He adopted the name of Moon Knight and battled crime as a means to thank Khonshu for his second chance at life. He parlayed his wealth he acquired as a mercenary into a fortune through business investments and adopted the name of Steven Grant, millionaire. Also, to aid in his battle against the criminal underworld, he created the third identity of cab driver, Jake Lockley in order to move freely among the populace and gather information. However, the emotional strain of balancing 4 different identities soon took it's toll on Marc Spector and, combined with the sudden death of his father as well as the preference of his girlfriend, Marlene, for the Steven Grant alter ego, he had a mental breakdown. He began to believe that millionaire Steven Grant was his true self. Finally, after several subsequent nervous breakdowns, he realized this was a lie and began to piece together his life as Marc Spector. He transferred all of Steven Grant's wealth to Marc Spector and gave up his Moon Knight crimefighting career to become an art dealer. To finalize his retirement, he sold off his statue of Khonsu that he had acquired long ago. But soon afterwards he began having vivid dreams of Khonshu calling him back to Egypt. This drastic change of heart alienated Marlene and she left Marc. While in Egypt, he heard a voice calling to him from a cave that contained a tomb and encountered 3 priests of Khonsu . Without being able to help himself, he donned a new Moon Knight costume and was provided weapons by the priests who tasked him to return the statue of Khonshu to them. After doing so, he became an agent of the priests and battled evil at their behest and in the name of Khonsu. So I am eager to see where this show goes as I look forward to Moon Knight mixing it up with the rest of the MCU!

I’ve been a fan of Moon Knight for years and I could very easily just dive into so much here in the comments lol, I’m very passionate about the character. But since you made it a concerted effort to go in completely blind without even seeing trailers, not familiar with the character and so on, I’m gonna refrain from going into his lore too much to not spoil. All I’ll say is that you are in for a CRAZY, but hopefully incredible journey. Basically everything I was hoping to see from an episode 1 of this show was met in this episode. My favorite part being how it skipped over every time Marc took control so we focused strictly on Steven’s POV throughout the episode. We’ll definitely see more of Marc, and Moon Knight, in the next episode. Gets a 10/10 from me honestly

It was an interesting take on an "origin" for a superhero in that so far both the hero and the audience didn't get to actually see it happening, haha. I'm looking forward to more. I think its cool that you haven't seen any trailers or press too. When it comes to the MCU I think only having seen the previous MCU content is the best way to go these days.

This first episode shows a parallel Between Arthur Harrow and Steven Grant that I don’t think people noticed. When they both start their days, Arthur steps into sandals with glass on the bottom and Steven steps on sand. Which pretty much connects both of them to Egypt and Egyptian gods, since they are both avatars of Egyptian gods. The funny thing is that he keeps saying “laters gators”. It’s probably a reference to the Egyptian god Ammit, who has the head of a crocodile.

Oscar Isaac's performance reminded me of Steve Martin's in "All of Me", a comedy where he's inhabited by Lily Tomlin's soul, and James McAvoy's in "Split", a Shyamalan thriller about multiple personality disorder. F. MURRAY ABRAHAM is the voice of Khonshu! Incredible! Salieri himself! Donna is a B+%#! Those were Anubis' jackals chasing Steven in the museum! GLASS IN SHOES Why? Pain for penance like monastic self-flagellation to mimic Christ's suffering. The Opus Dei assassin in "The DaVinci Code" wore barbed wire for this purpose. Why does Harrow do it since he worships Ammit? I don't know except that psychopaths like G. Gordon Liddy sometimes test the limits of their flesh. In Liddy's case, he would hold his palm over an open flame. ENNEAD NUN (primordial chaos)--->ATUM (self-creating creator)--->SHU (Air) + TEFNUT (Water)--->GEB (Earth) + NUT (Sky)--->OSIRIS + ISIS + SET + NEPHTHYS---> HORUS (O+I) & ANUBIS (S+N) Two other deities self-created when Atum established order: THOTH, the ibis-headed god of mathematics and science, and MA'AT, the goddess of truth and morality, who prevent the world from descending back into chaos. Moon Knight is often labeled as MARVEL'S ANSWER TO BATMAN because of the billionaire identity, the mansion, the cave headquarters, gadgets and vehicles!

This was all great...but recommending "split"...nope, it is very bad DID representation. The DID community pretty unanimously dislikes the movie. But I can say James' acting was VERY good. But the movie itself was not. Mr. Robot is a much better show to recommend for pretty decent DID representation.

Moonknight is a great very complex character in the comics. Hope they stay true to that! If they stay true to the comics, you will be very surprised with the main protagonist "Steven" :)

He doesn’t have a mom, that’s either Marc sending the post cards (you can see it in Steven work) or she is dead and Steven doesn’t even know it and Gus died while Marc was doing his stuff in those two days and Marc got him a new one. We’ll get answers with the POV of Marc in the next episode or whatever episode is going to be focused on Marc.

You just watched Moon Knight. The D.I.D. of the character is an interesting take to bring into the MCU. There is so much that you can be told about the comic character but I think it would spoil the discovery that is happening with this show. The journey is figuring out who and what is real from the perspective of the dominate personality. Seeing this from Steven's point of view is interesting. They could do a show on every personality but we would be doing far more than 6 shows. Confusion is the norm with Moon Knight because you really don't know what personality we are dealing with. The show is using that confusion. In the comic you see the personalities. What is going to be new is they are going to get into the Egyptian Pantheon in this show. If you don't understand Egyptian Mythology it might be advisable to look at the basic mythology of the 9 major gods and the creation of the world. The previews have shown that they are going to hint at the creation of Moon Knight. Just realize we are talking about different personalities. So far you have seen Steven, Marc and Moon Knight. Some are closely related and aware of the others and some are not. They have done some major changes from the comics like Steven is a millionaire in the comics like Bruce Wayne but for years the creative teams have been trying to steer Moon Knight away from the Batman comparisons. Steven as a nice guy who is unaware is a good new twist that makes the character interesting. My question is why have the multiple personalities? Why were they needed? The dominate personality is strong enough to do the will of the Moon God Konshu. Why would he need the other personalities? It will be interesting to see why in the show. The comic has explained it but it does seem the show is taking a different tact.

@Nick Kelly SPOILERS FOR MOON KNIGHT LORE He doesn’t have the other identities for a purpose, although that’s how it WAS written in early Moon Knight comics. But as time went on they leaned into the DID aspect of it more, and that it’s because of the trauma of the whole experience with being resurrected by Khonshu when Marc was on his mission in Egypt. I’m curious to see the angle they take it with the series though

@@rileyribble6733 I mean DID is a logical disorder and alters are usually there for a purpose or reason due to a severe trauma. There are even multiple archetype roles an alter can be. There's protectors(against all types of harm), persecutors(are a type of protector but are usually more self destructive & can push people away as a form of protection), caretakers, trauma holders. The host of a system, which is Marc( though I'd say Marc is also a protecter) is also a system role. So they weren't wrong is asking what each alters purpose for existing in the system is. 🤷‍♀️ Of course not all alters neatly into a role and that's totally okay...but a LOT do. And those that do find... the role categories helpful.

Going to be short. See that many others have offered all info you need on Marc/Steven. It's fun that you went in completely blind, but this ain't Captain America and it can be confusing. Egyptian gods play a pivotal role, obviously. As does the multiple personalities. Moon Knight isn't Deadpool, but they have some shared features. Both were mercenaries and they are both anti-heroes.

I'm watching along with the reactions so I don't have the benefit of all the season's info yet but I'll be curious how they proceed forward since the tragic death of Gaspard Ulliel back in January. Also, I looked down through several comments and noticed about half of them have spoilers about characters and such. Not to be "that" guy but please don't tip those of us with no previous knowledge off. I'd like to learn who Marc and the others are as the story unfolds without having to avoid the comments section entirely.

Now that you've seen the end: It actually makes _sense_ that Stevens british accents would sound maybe a bit overblown or cartoony... It isn't the accent Mark grew up with. he only knows it through this one movie In the same vein... Is the personality that kills all the people when they come to close Marc? or is that our first encounter with jake? Also i still think it is jake that asked the Lady out,Marc doesn't really seem the Type.

I thought Marc was asking the lady out for Steven. He obviously knows Steven is a romantic and wants somebody in his life, so maybe he was helping him out. It’s one of those things about Marc he kind of forget. He really did try to take care of Steven as much as he could.

But i am also still a bit confused as to how Steven was able to hold down a steady job in London, when Marc regularly traveled to Germany, Egypt or other places. i mean, Steven lost two days from this little trip in the first episode. Was he not scheduled for those days? Did Marc call in sick and if so, how many sickdays can Steven take? I'm still a bit fuzzy on the actual _Logistics_ of how Steven/Marc worked.
