Make a couple forms and fill in the chip outs with resin and go from there. glue a block on the top and make a deeper mortice. It will still be unique. JMO! I like beer!!

Hey buddy. It's not a failure. It is the way the piece is requesting a design change. Never shelf of shame only a work in progress shelf. Dam sure you will come up with an idea for its completion. Colours are amazing. Thanks for sharing Ken. Cheers Bruce

Man, the intro alone deserves a like. Well done! I think the bowl can be salvaged. It's really pretty and hope it doesn't stay on the shelf of shame for too long.

Yes, put it in the shelf for a bit and go back to it with fresh eyes and enthusiasm. It’s got loads of potential, those colours are very exciting. 😅

Hi Ken. This is one of the best things about this community - the willingness of everyone to admit when mistakes happen and, generally to explain how to fix them. You’ll figure it out. And I love to see ribbons of resin flying out over - someone else. Keep the faith and stay strong 🌞

I love the shape of that bowl. I know it isn't what you want it to be right now, but I bet in good time it'll become something super cool!

Those colors are absolutely stunning together, Ken! What would the possibility be of taking off the foot and recasting the whole thing in clear resin. Then hollowing it out to look like, or make a fish bowl? I haven't seen anything like that done before, but it could look cool if it's feasible.

The resin looks like what abalone she’ll want to grow up to be 😊 Really hope you continue with the project, maybe fill the upper damage with something with a stark difference (like a Pearl off white with a couple of the colors mixed in) and the bottom with some of the colors originally used in the project.

Hey there, put more resin back on and just turn it into a lamp so it also turns too so children have pretty peacock lamps. You can always try again. 😊
@danstark334111 ай бұрын
Did you see that it was punky and you decided to seal it to save on resin? I was discussing the decision with my wife as it was happening. I guessed that it was to save on the costs of the resin since none of the resin choices are cheap. But wondered if that resin that it would soak up, would be better used to make the wood more solid or fill in any thin cracks.
@MoonpieCreations11 ай бұрын
Yes, I started think I should have mixed a 50/50 resin/acetone and soaked the wood instead. Could have hardened the wood.
@danstark334111 ай бұрын
I've never heard of anything like that. Or is that a Total Boat thing?@@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations11 ай бұрын
@@danstark3341 No it is just a way to thin out resin and let it soak into wood. The Acetone will gas of and the resin will harden.
@akhagee470711 ай бұрын
Cactus juice first? Then it's stabilized, but not color changed. As for this bowl? Maybe hand finish it instead of lathe. Not necessarily BY hand, but hand held tools, even if powered ones. As long as you leave no hard edges at the top.

That's really too bad and I was really starting to like it. 😁 Definitely worth saving, the colors are really good and the walnut looks good with those colors. Really like the shape you were going for as well. Maybe just making it smaller would be all that is needed. The real question is whether it will stay on while you are doing that. Punky wood can be so fickle.
@MoonpieCreations11 ай бұрын
I totally agree! Thanks

Hey there, Moonpie! You gotta keep tailstock support on a blank, even when hollowing the inside of the bowl. Are your chuck jaws dovetail? They need to be, especially when expanding into a recess, and you need to take great care in shaping the recess. So how do you maintain tailstock support when hollowing the bowl? Think about it. You can figure it out. I don't mean this to be a criticism. I've gone chasing after many a bowl. Tailstock support is key. I'd rather be in hell with a broke back than to turn epoxy resin, but people are different. My latest project, not of my choosing, was adding sprinkles to a wooden donut, so to each his own. I enjoyed the video even though it didn't have a happy ending. Thanks for posting. --Old guy

My first thought was 12 gauge but you didn't want to do that. Check out David Adamsen to see how he gets those out of a bucket. Bill
@danstark334111 ай бұрын
You say that it's kind of punky. Have you thought about stabilizing it? I mean, I don't think that the cactus juice would hurt the other resin, nor the cooking temps for stabilizing resin. Maybe you could salvage the original design.
@MoonpieCreations11 ай бұрын
Have tried to use Stabilizing resin after casting before. The 200 degrees it takes to harden the resin causes the already cast resin to crack. But it's an idea to save the wood and may be worth it.

@theodgie994411 ай бұрын
Why don't you sand and recast the bottom? Make it look like another layer. If you make it big enough, that could be the new top. As for the top, I would take it down below the damage. Your videos have come a long way since the early days. Enjoying them all

I saw you fixing much larger mistakes than these... This is not even a funnel yet :) And since it is already colourful, you don't have to mix the exact colour again for patching that chip on the top, almost anything is good.
@lyndacarter458611 ай бұрын
Shame to shoot it! Patch the bottom with resin, either peacock or contrasting, your choice, obviously. But give yourself a break from it; surprising how a bit of time (and sleep!) can change our enthusiasm for a project. 😊

Don’t shoot it…… well not yet anyway. When you take yourself out of “pause” mode and get back on it I’m sure it’s going to be an awesome looking piece. Sure a little smaller all around but So What. Like Mike Tyson likes to say “we all have a plan…… until you get punched in the face.” So back in the saddle and get’r done! 😊

It's too pretty for the Shelf of shame. Cut the base back it's too big anyhow, and use Gorilla tape (or similar) around the top so you can make a small pour to fix the top. You'll figure something out..
