@@facebag666 Some had Al intakes, but most were iron. Dodge had same thing as "Dart Lite". Hood skin was steel, bracing was Al. Bumper supports were Al, lightweight glass was used. They weren't that much lighter, it was the lean jetting, mild gearing and overdrive that really upped the mpg. 225s are very efficient, just not powerful. Had a friend with one; he said he really did get 36mpg with it.

@@snysnd Spot on! Dad has a 1976 Feather Duster. I believe he has netted around 33 mpg with it. It' has the a833 od trans and 2.76 rear axle if I remember correctly. He would probably get even better mpg with it but everything here is an incline or going up a mountain. As for the weight, I'd agree there as well. Maybe a 200 pound weight difference. They still have the extremely heavy doors and bumpers of '74-76 a bodies.

Great build to show what a mild mannered 360 can do! When you grew up on mopar and thousands of other engines in heavy duty use you DO NOT see full shaft mounted rockers with POSITIVE oiling not just pumping huge quantities oil in the general area of the top end as weird! We frequently removed the SIX bolt valve covers with a proper edge formed into it to watch them run! Everything mopar with overhead valves ran it as well as everything else ever seriously intended for industrial use. Is always amazed me how many baidaids and crutches brand x people were willing to pay for to get what we were blessed with in oiling, and valve train strength. Mopars always ran at least 2x the seat pressure and had much larger lifters prompting the CHRYSLER ONLY camshaft lobe sections in catalogs! We were especially blessed in big blocks which back in the day for mopar guys were very plentiful being the low grade ore base engines for any chrysler or imperial instead of small blocks. After working on one water pump, oil pump, intake manifold swap, or distributor which could be changed in minutes in the pits on a 383 after we took our sandwiches out from under the "air gap!" Intake at lunch we never looked back. Carrol Shelby showed in the 90s the complete myth of The mopars being expensive with a 360 being (at 1990 Dollars) about $600 cheaper than a 350 for the same hp with a durability statistic of at LEAST 3x better over 2 seasons in the same classes. However if im going to drive a truck everyday thats a Small block it would be a Chevy first. Gas mileage, cold starting and warmup sucked on the older LAs as well as oil consumption from poor valve seals. SBC are great with a slightly lopey cam, a good intake, and headers. Much more and pandoras box was opened. Looking forward to your hotter build. I also owned many of the worst examples of any LA, the mid to late 70s 318 and 360 Dodge full time 4x4s! 7mpg, cold blooded no heater! Great power tho. We always said the worst part about a 70s 318 was that it just kept going, ticked you off every day but you felt bad about ripping it out to put in a hot 440 that would actually double your mileage and cost the same to build. Keep up the good work! Not downing anyones motors, GM and Ford Smallblocks were in my opinion after over 120 vehicles much better than most LAs for mild performance and daily drivers. But since 18 yrs old i daily drive in all weather big BBMs always with more than one carb! 13yrs, 2500 passes, drive to work, haul grain, pull trailers same car 440+6 87 octane, 13.41 at 4860 lb 42 top eliminator trophies no breakages oil pan not off for the next two cars!

No no no. A 65 Mopar anything does not have a 360. You probably have a 361, an early, low deck, big block. The predecessor to the low deck 383 and 400. Easiest way to tell: small blocks have the distributor at the rear. Big blocks have them in front, at about a 40 degree angle. The only other motorhome engine in 65 was the 318 Polysphere, an earlier small block with semi-hemi heads.

There was a lot of debate over which was better, the 340 or the 360. Both were awesome, but each had there issues. The 360’s tend to crack near the oil drain back slots in the lifter valley. The reason for this may be the 360’s larger main journals, leaving less mass in that area of the block. It also had cast cranks only, but those cranks have been used up to 6800 rpm reliably. The 340 came with a forged steel crank in all years except 74. They also had full floating pistons, but the 360 could be converted to run them as well. The 318 was also a nice engine. The problem with it was lack of compression. You’d have to have custom pistons made to get above 8-1 back in the day, higher hypertext ic pistons are probably available today. And you can take a 360 crank, cut down the mains to 340/318 size and make 349 cubic inch engines out of them. The feather duster mentioned was a special version made for higher fuel economy. The cool thing was that they made the front fenders and hood out of aluminum and a long with the slant 6 they had reasonable fuel mileage. But if you found one and got an adapter kframe for a small block or big block the light front end would be a big help! The only disappointing thing for this build that they only got 314 hp. Bullshit! With a comp cams High Energy 268 cam they make 360 hp when you r7n 9-1 compression, a good intake and headers and 650 CFM carb. When comp came out with the HE268 grind Mopar was the only engine tested that made one hp per cubic inch at the time, which was around 1981.

@ Andrew... It doesn't even need that. If you look at the cylinder heads they had huge combustion chambers and dish pistons. That 360 couldn't have had 8:1 compression. A good cam and 10:1 compression would make impressive numbers, but it's not a GM product so they have to rig the build.

I've got a 72 plymouth scamp. Originally was produced with a 318LA but after some searching and horse trading I managed to find a suitable 340. It's off to the machine shop this Tuesday. I have an a833 4 speed (aluminum - even tho I wanted cast) with an 8 3/4 sure grip. Engine will be bored and stroked to 416ci. I have a vic jr 340 single plane intake (that I traded for). Centerline front runners and big meat for the back. Carb will be dominator series to throw as much fuel she will take. The car was found in a junkyard with no engine but I saw a vision of a nostalgic quarter mile car. While it won't be the fastest thing out there, it will be great to bring her back to life and let her eat.

I built my 74 318 about 10 years ago. The edelbrock matched set ( intake, carb, and cam ) were great from summit and if you can afford it. Go with a D.U.I. distributor. You send them all the specs for your engine, drivetrain and car weight and they custom build the 1 wire HEI to your car. They also had a lifetime recurve warranty. Change the stats? Ship it back they would change it for free, FOREVER.

Depending on your budget and skill level, a stock 360 crank will fit your 318, the main journals have to be ground down a bit, magnum heads (smaller combustion chamber= higher compression) will work on a LA engine, but you have to use amc style lifters and hollow push rods, and there are 2 oil holes that feed oil to the heads that need to be blocked, usually the magnum head gasket is sufficiant for this. But it is not difficult to tap those holes and install a set screw flush with the deck. With the 360 crank and bored 20 over it should be around 344 cid. But, the 360 crank is externally balanced, so you will need to either get an aftermarket harmonic balancer and flywheel, or have the machine shop internally balance it. Either way, it is a "relatively" affordable way to build a 318 stroker for daily driving, and weekend fun. Also, from 1988 to 1992 318 LA engines were factory upgraded to roller cams, 360 La engines were upgraded in 1989.

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk but the Magnum 360 in my Roadrunner clone is making about 400 HP and I've got about $2400 in the whole swap including fluids, Hemi orange paint, gaskets, etcetera. The HP isn't my estimate either, the race shop that made my cam said my combo should be good for about 400-420 HP depending on the cylinder wear. A few places I saved a lot of cash were using the headers, carb, distributor, timing cover and valve covers from my old 273. If you were swapping from a Slant Six or starting with no engine in your project at all some of those pieces could potentially add another couple hundred bucks to the cost.

m 88 Last year wasn’t it a Chevy at TX2K that won? And at Summer Nationals last year another Chevy? And at Worlds last year- you guessed it another Chevy LS7. Mopar are cute for the road when you wanna bang gears and beat grandma off the stop light. But when you wanna go serious fast people choose Chevrolet outside of Funny cars and dragsters. Hell even a stock iron block Chevrolet straight six laid down a SUB 7 second pass. Show me a Mopar that’ll do that? That will hold that much HP and make that many 6.90 1/4 mile runs on stock block and internals.

Mopar has OWNED racing since they came out with the 1st gen hemi in the 1950s, every other brand has been playing catchup ever since. And with that claim of a stock internal and stock block chevy straight six? Thats a fatass lie and everyone in this world knows it so don't even dare claim that.

Port work can make 1.88 heads easily capable of stretching the power up into 8000, I had a 360 LA that still pulled at 8600 for my 2-3 shift, was running 298/.520" Summit racing Grind, 1 3/4" long tube headers, 850 double pumper, Maximum porting, Forged/Nitrided crank out of a police interceptor 360, stock rods I deburred, ARP wavelock rod bolts, and stock pistons (340 Grams each, the lightest stock piston compared to the ford and chevy motors of similar bores.) had added a second magnetic pickup to the distributor 1.5 degrees off for a second spark through second gold ignition box, 3 degrees of crank timing, had more parts than money at the time, Ported out Torker 2-340 manifold, 2" carb spacer. Over 500 HP on pump gas, that was a sick cam, I don't know if Summit Racing still does that grind, I bought it because it was like 252 degrees @050", taking advantage of the larger dodge lifter diameter. It hit 9000 RPM every day of its life, destroyed all the local racers. When you control your air flow, put Nascar engine building type thought into everything, I custom made my 12 quart oil pan, HV oil pump and ran the PH16's which are like 10" long oil filter, I had clearanced all rods and mains to .001" exactly, ran straight 60 wt oil, Had 100 PSI hot anything over 3000 RPM. It was in a Mud Bog truck that blew the doors off everything, 4:10 Gears, locker, 16.5" wide tires, It always puled the front end off the ground in second gear. I worked for MCS Racing, and my bosses dad was an ex Nascar driver, I always picked his brain on everyting, how they made 700HP+ even with a 390CFM restrictor plate. If you can understand that part, and set the conditions, You can make it scream. In the head porting its critical that you leave a minimum .050" Radius after your valve cut. Focus on the minimum cross sectional widths of all air passages and sharp transitions, I love it!! Anyway, Ya'll Have a Great Day!!

The LA 360 was offered from 1971 - 1992. The Magnum 5.9 360 was offered from 1993 - 2003. There were quite a few different 340/360 heads. The only ones worth a damn were the 1989-92 308 castings, and '93 and up Magnums. The '89 and up 360/5.9 engines also have hydraulic roller lifters and cams. Carbs were the 2280 Holley 2bl, the Carter TQ, and QJet from '85-89. The last use of the 360 in passenger cars was 1980, with the E57 in the New Yorker, and the E58 in R and F body police models, and J body. The popular M body was not available with the A38 police package until 1981, so those cars were never available with the E58 from the factory. Anyone looking to build an LA would be wise to build a 5.9 Magnum, as those engines had a plethora of updates, and with full aftermarket support via Mopar, they offer the best value. It would also be very wise to compare the cost of building the older LA/Magnum 360, versus finding a low mile/low dollar 3G Hemi. Many boneyards offer assemblies, complete with harness, ECM, pedal, etc for very good prices.

Compression ratios for 340s (68-71) are 10.5 to 1, but only 8.8 at best for 360s. They also had better stock exhaust manifolds, recurved distributors and more cam than the 360s did in stock form.

One word; compression. Stock 360's (early LA ones anyway, not magnum) had pretty weak compression. The pistons they used look like the sealed power 405's which have a compression height of 1.576 inches, and add to that the later stock heads with a 72cc combustion chamber. If you do the math and factor in the dish of the piston (8.8cc) and the head gasket volume (~10cc) and the compression works out to just 7.5 to 1. On top of that they chose a pretty low duration camshaft, so it was destined to make the peak power it did. IMO the best way to wake up any of the stock LA engines is a taller piston to bring the compression up.
@johnjacobsen2736
@johnjacobsen2736 4 жыл бұрын
low compression is WAY more practical.. You can load in tons of advance timing which makes an engine much punchier and responsive and "streetable" i.e. way funner to drive. And, it can run on today's garbage gas.

Works exceptionally well in lower compression low stall auto 318s and 360s. @@frigglebiscuit7484 a low mile 5.7 hemi in the midwest is $1,900. Combined with the fact that I will drive the vehicle less than 1,000 miles a year so im really not concerned with dropped valves etc. associated with high mileage hemis

@@frigglebiscuit7484 You might have built your big block in the 1980s for $800 😅 the budget build for the 360 in this video was $2,500. And I also want port fuel injection and hydraulic rollers which the hemi already has. To do that in a 440 is $$$$

"Budget Build"? More like stock rebuild. What's the point?
@ReallyRyan.
@ReallyRyan. 4 жыл бұрын
To build the engine for cheap. Honestly, what did you expect? For them to use expensive race-engineered parts or second-hand garbage? They did fine, found all new parts and did so without spending a ton of money. Apparently, the concept of a budget build is lost on you.
@jamescopeland8813
@jamescopeland8813 4 жыл бұрын
@@ReallyRyan. - no... the concept of a budget build is not "lost on [me]". A true "budget build" would've included some performance hand work, such as porting and polishing, etc... this is little more than stock, with an RV cam. That's too close to stock, to drop the "re" of of "REbuild".

@@youngmopartruck3462 - if you're benchmarking "stock power", just call it a "stock Rebuild". Pretty simple, if you ask me. Nobody was butthurt enough to bring up Chevy 'til you... so there's that. Furthermore, I can guarantee... for the price of this stock rebuild, I could make a Chevy turn more ponies. As a matter of fact, for the price of a couple sanding drums, anybody who knows anything about engines could've gotten another 20 horsepower and better throttle response out of this engine. Real engine builds (not REbuilds) don't end with a catalog order and some jet/timing changes. For God's sake, cheap crate motors get more massage work.

Good thing they rigged this build with low compression and a small cam like they do with Ford builds, If they built it with normal compression and a good cam the Chevrolet faithful would be soak-in their cry-in towels when they saw how much power a 360 can really produce.

These guy's think 300 h.p. is fast...just for starters and put some compression at least 10.5.1 to 11.5.1 and do an E85 build. E85 is equivalent to 105 octane and engines run 20° degrees cooler. It's a win win all the way around and a cam with a min lift of .520 (see some horsepower numbers) some tuning required.

Once again you shoot the Mopar in the foot. A GOOD cam would have been the same price and made MUCH BETTER power. When I built my 360 for my Aspen R/T I used an effectively stock engine that I did a ring and bearing job on, a .480 lift 230 @ .050 107 lobe separation cam with a Weiand 8009. The car ran very hard and was totally streetable. But a build like that here would (as usual) embarass the Fords and GM's, so us Mopar guys get shit on just like has always happened for the last 40 years.
