Bagua (八卦), aka pakua is a very ancient chinese Kung Fu martial art. Is it practical? This Taiwanese video I found online explains how Bagua could be used to combat Qin Na (擒拿)/Aikido wrist locks ▶ JerryLiuFilms re-edited it to make it flow and translated it for a Western audience. The Wushu forms of Kung Fu are too over-exposed globally, and JerryLiuFilms aims to bring to the world more types of Kung Fu than just the Jet Li stuff.
▶ Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. Here's the original video: • 八卦擒拿及反擒拿 Bagua Zhang Q...

Very different fron the bagua we practice but clearly this is a genuine practitioner. You can see his use of the various palms, whole body power, footwork, and circular movement. Well done, much respect.

All of these techniques can work very well. They are implemented and exist within more sophisticated grapples. He is teaching you the founding principles of how to throw a person off center.

I think you have to make the distinction between "grappling" which an approach that a large group of martial arts, and some one grabbing you. These techniques do not address how to apply bagua against grappling martial arts like bjj or wrestling. I think if you want to know how to defend yourself against those martial arts you should learn them, usually every martial art has figured out how to best defend yourself against it's own techniques especially here in the states were people switch between martial arts quiet frequently..

You have to have good sensitivity skills to make adjustments if the opponent resists.

One thing i see this guy do that I think he could do better(depending on what you want to do) is when he pushes back his attacker by their throat. This could work as a strike BUT if you want to push them you should aim for the top of the head. Pushing their head back will throw them off balance much faster and to a greater degree. Again it depends on what you want to do. Just a thought

I don't think he did this, but pushing on the throat can be very effective if you put a finger right above the bone notch in the middle and push in and down kind of hooking in (try it on yourself before a partner can be very painful) I once had a teacher take me all the way to the ground with this move and my throat was sore for a couple days afterward so be careful if you practice it, I think the move is best used though just to create a little space than follow up with something like an elbow strike to jaw, chop to side of the neck and a throw :)

You don't need to have your hands exactly where he puts them you don't need to grip the wrist exactly where he grips them you don't need to have your palms up in open exactly the way he has his palms up and open

Most of these moves are way too complicated for the result the problem they solve, and furthermore these moves depend on the other guy from not reacting or moving at all while the master perform 3 actions to counter one hold, and lastly in a real situation seldom if ever do ppl peacefully just hold onto you like shown here, they usually would push or shove etc, making some of these moves not all that practical to pull off.
