I’ve seen TONS of instructional videos and I’m so glad to see this CRUCIAL part of the swing broken down and explained. We are taskmasters, give us a task and our bodies will do what’s necessary to get in position and complete the task. I don’t believe every inch of the swing needs explaining. This part of the swing is the moment of truth, do us all a favor and please make additional videos covering a topic like this instead of another “how to stop slicing” video that others keep uploading. This lesson should have a billion views...but the 570 or so that have clicked so far are getting a private lesson that worth years of range buckets. I'll just add that three weeks ago our Club had a 5-club tournament, and the scores were really odd; odd in that they were actually an improvement from the allotted 14. One would expect a huge hike in scoring. Did not happen. I shot a pretty good round and I noticed throughout the round I had shaft lean on every shot where I had too much club. I hit some gorgeous shots...some went too far as expected...but never even mishit a single shot. My whole problem comes when I swing at Full Speed...that's where the shaft lean disappears and trouble begins. So, I will not hit another shot (irons and hybrids) without shaft lean again for the rest of my life; that's my motto...even if I have to take an extra club for whatever yardage every time. The result with shaft lean is just too good, too straight, and too satisfying. It is a learning thing with the turning of the hips/opening etc...Thanks for the lesson, and thanks for helping us amateurs have fun with our game.

Feel that has been working for me is getting pressure into my lead foot early. Once I have some pressure built up in my lead foot I push into the ground as hard as I can while rotating my hips - this has helped a lot with me getting my body open at impact. Mike, Shaun thanks for another great video. QQ though how does getting your hips open differ from firing the hips; i.e are you saying that by the time the shaft i parallel to the ground hips should have stopped powering the swing and it should be torso and arms? A bit like the old k-vest Kinematic sequence?
@AthleticMotionGolf6 жыл бұрын
Firing for us means a really strong, hard, blast from the hips right from the top... that's just not something we see in good swings. It's a far more "gradual" unwinding. Yes, once the arms and truck start to hit their peak accelerations, the hips will slow. But that's not something that has to be a thought or intent during the downswing. Does that answer what you're asking?
@jballoregon6 жыл бұрын
Making sure the hand path works DTL or inside the set up position really sets up the proper shoulder tilts, right hip load, and hand depth. I hit warm up 3/4 shots with this impact, right hand sensation. Your videos are terrific but I’m a golf thought, temporary fix, basket case. Some say golf is a left side game but then I’m told to fire the right side. Skip a stone. Pressure from the ground pushes back as you straighten your left leg. Hands are passive but the left hand is pulling as the right hand pushes. The motorcycle. Swing the handle to the left. Keep spine angle but feel like you are jumping up at impact. More. How is the best way to cut through so much seemingly conflicting information? Thanks

Honestly, Dave a great first step would be to limit your info sources. Then look for a source that has real measured data to back up thier information. If the problem is too much conlflicting info running through you head, then you really need to purge all that info that doesn't actually happen the golf swing.

Another great video guys. One question I have is on club face. In that slap move it looks like club face is pointing directly away from the golfer when the club is parallel to the ground on the downswing, then it is square to target at impact. Is that where the club face should be turning? Or can it turn earlier? Or is there no perfect answer. I did watch the drive it like a pro squaring the face video which showed degree turn per second (over 1000 degrees) but I think degrees of turn from say 90 to 0 would be more useful to understand the club face closing on the downswing or a percentage of how much the club face has turned throughout the downswing, i.e. 80% of the club face squaring happens in the last quarter of the downswing (or whatever is ideal).
@AthleticMotionGolf6 жыл бұрын
Such a great question👊 A good rule is the longer the club, the earlier it should start squaring... or the faster you swing, the earlier the better. That's a great idea for a video to show the percentages rather than raw degrees. That will require some math on our part, so it might take us a minute to do😊
@stuartmulvaney90506 жыл бұрын
@@AthleticMotionGolf thanks for the response. Appreciate the maths involved and I assume gears doesn't do percentages to make it easy! Club face degrees to target may make most sense but appreciate target line will not always be where a golfer wants their club face to finish as club face and club path are much more key.

Good stuff as usual. I might add the importance of that right side tilt is so critical. You guys have done come great work showingg the "turn" is actually back extension+left side tilt then back through ball is foward pelvic tilt+ right side tilt. Then we gotta be going into back extension with right side tilt otherwise open just can't happen. And I happen to think that is very difficult for golfers to get their head around. Almost all are "staying down" in forward tilt and there's just no way to deliver correctly from there. 30 years teaching golf and what I just tried to explain I still find the most difficult concept to get across. I'm not sure the word "turn" is ideal for the motion at all. The pivot certainly rottatee the pelvis but what's going on above in the shoulders is not really a "turn". Back extension +left tilt then back into forward tilt and right to tilt and pte impact gotta be going back into back extension and while increasing right tilt. And that is just so difficult to teach cause it's so counterintuitive! But, as you two know, once you can do it the whole thing seem quite easy and obvious. I've looked at everyone's teaching and I've yet to see a great way to convey what what we're talking about here. But I bring it up because the delivery concepts you describe here just can't happen without it. I wonder if you two find it challenging to convey also?

Great comments. I think that's why we like these visual mediums so well compared to audio or written because we can show as we describe. No question there a bias or different connotation to just about every common word used in the golf swing, lol. It's kinda why we interchange words so often for the same move. Words are important, but I think getting the right concept over is more important than what it's called.

A question or comment about the lead shoulder in this equation. @FitFast86 жыл бұрын
For me, having a neutral grip and then managing the bend in the back of the left wrist throughout the swing is key. Its so easy to flatten or over-bend the wrist causing the club face to be too open or closed, and not just at impact. Having the club face out of position, especially in the back swing, I believe, is one of the main causes of compensations in the swing. If you can feel something is not right or you seem to end up with the club face out of position in your grip at the end of the swing, then look at the motion of the left wrist. Learning to control the bend in the wrist as you rotate it, swing back and change direction is a relatively complex skill that is often over looked by even high level players, as well as by most coaches.

I have a question for Athletic motion golf you guys. Some PGA Players are at the top of backswing their left wrists bowed mean their clubface closed so during their downswing clubface closed most of the time for example( Dustin Johnson , Brooks Koepka so on ) . Is good for more distances? some people think The closed face is fewer hands rotation at impact so better Would you recommend the clubface closed at the top of backswing? Thank you!
@wreckim6 жыл бұрын
Andrew, I'm not expert, but I've viewed so many lessons and taken a few with a local pro on this. The bowed wrist is certainly a great thing for those Pros, but it could also invite injury. Be careful. A flat wrist is certainly great IMO. 2c.
@Ryan-fx7jx6 жыл бұрын
Don't bow your wrist like that intentionally unless a good coach tells you to. DJ has wicked high hands and Brooks is a beast of a human. It's not as natural and most pros actually have a slight cup shown by another vid by these guys.
@AthleticMotionGolf6 жыл бұрын
You got some great advice already about the cautions of a strongly bowed wrist. As far as, what's "best"... you have to consider all the things that happen from that top of the swing position to impact. Nothing up at the top is guaranteed to be there down by the ball. A flatish wrist is a great place to start from for so many golfers and where we typically recommend.

It all depends on where you're starting from. If you are closed at impact being more open will help stabilize the face, bring the hands more forward for better loft control, and produce a more consistent impact point just to name a few. If you're already open, adding to that may or may not do much for you.

I have to disagree with the feel of slapping at the ball as a useful one-it will encourage a push through impact rather than a rotation (and for the right arm to extend way too late). Not only that but it will cause release issues for all but the shortest irons. I like to think of the down swing as a combination of extension of the right arm whilst dropping the arms and then once the hands are in the correct position an almost passive rotation of the body. For me a better feel is a chopping motion with the right arm towards the ground (ie extending the right arm at the elbow) at a position about 45 degrees to the right of my right leg towards the ground (and further back the longer the club is), exactly the same as I would when making a side arm throw. I don't rotate hard through impact; the rotation is almost passive but it's rapid because the pelvis is rotating correctly over the femurs. People who are better at side arm throwing or skimming stones-they don't throw at the target as such, their release happens towards the target (i.e they've added power and set positions up earlier in the motion).

You guys definitely know what you are doing, but you guys really don't know how to speak like a high handicapper. I think it's a language barrier. No one I play with, consciously thinks he "stays back and scoops the ball." Actually, we all do, but that's not the words we would use to describe it. Instead, we would say that we keep our shoulders parallel at impact, and swing our arms thru the ball. The language makes a difference, because I initially ignored what you were saying in the video, because "I don't stay back and scoop the ball," no one does that. But, if you would have said something "VERY, VERY EMPHATIC," like, shoulder rotation must be continuous all the way to impact. Then add that most weekend warriors stop shoulder rotation at parallel and then fire the hands. And, that lack of shoulder rotation causes the golfer to stay back and scoop the ball. Then I would have thought wow, that's exactly what I do. It would have saved me a lot of time. Anyway, I noticed that you were "continuously" moving your right shoulder toward the target, but mostly ignored it (language thing). I definitely wasn't doing that before impact, and my fellow weekend buddies weren't doing that either. It was happening after impact, due to momentum. Instead, I was mostly stopping my right shoulder rotation at about the parallel position keeping my shoulders parallel to the target, and my head behind the ball, using mostly arms. My right shoulder would come thru after impact, do to momentum, giving the appearance that I did everything correctly. I didn't realize it until I tried a couple things in this video, and couldn't get it right. But, I kept experimenting until I stumbled onto the right sequence. It wasn't until I tried something that I knew wouldn't work: I slowed down my swing, and made my main focus to continuously rotate my right shoulder regardless of how bad I was going to shank the ball, and loose distance. Because, the only way I could hit the ball with the right shoulder rotating was to add lag and stop swinging my hands so fast. Well, I didn't shank it, and I didn't loose distance. I hit the best ball ever. Rotating the right shoulder continuously fixed a ton of things. All I have to do now is concentrate on my right shoulder rotation with tilt, and my right hand (to get the club face angle right, the slapping analogy fixes that). Everything else falls into place. With the Right shoulder rotating into the ball, you can't hit the ball unless the rest of the body moves into the right position: open hips, weight shifted to the left foot, lag, etc. For instance, It's impossible to "not have lag" if the right shoulder is "continuously" rotating. If I stop rotating my shoulders and fire my hands, I will loose lag every time. I just didn't realize that stopping my shoulder was causing so many other issues. High handicappers spend a lot of time working on speeding up our hands. Fast hands won't work if we don't stop the shoulders at parallel and let the hands fire thru. High handicappers would never even consider rotating their shoulders "continuously" to impact on the down swing, because every high handicapper thinks that would cause a shank or a slice. Especially, if they are shallowing the golf club incorrectly with an open face. The shoulder rotation "ALL THE WAY TO IMPACT," and the "slapping" analogy fixes both. Initially, due to the language barrier, I was "ADDING" the tips in this video to my swing, instead of substituting them. I was rotating my shoulder, but only until they were parallel. Then I was swinging my arms as fast as I could. Like I said, I've watched a ton of your videos, and none of the tips were working consistently. Because, everything was undone by stopping my shoulders at parallel, and letting my arms swing thru. Most weekenders, temporarily, stop rotating the shoulders at parallel to target so they can fire the hands. And, the more it doesn't work, the faster we move our hands, and the less we move our shoulders. It's a death spiral, that I have been doing for 40 years, until yesterday. We don't really listen to the shoulder rotation to and thru impact tip, because it doesn't leave us time to fire the hands. Basically, If I remove the "shoulder stopping at parallel to allow the hands to swing through" move (the move that I have been using for 40 years), I would have to come up with another move in its place. That's when a I tried the one in this video. Obviously, It worked. Thanks!
