I'd pay more for the Miyota any time. Higher beat rate, more accurate, thinner. It's pretty much a competition to ETA 2824. The NH35 is literally a $30 movement.

D M - Agree 100%! The Miyota is pretty much the Japanese equivalent of the ETA 2824, arguably as accurate & reliable, and can go longer without service. With the Miyota 9 series movement, it's a bargain for the price, especially considering it's other specs.

Started wearing the green one today, gorgeous! Had big trouble removing the pins from the bracelet to size it-they were bloody impossible to get out , so did a jeweller. Swapped it out for the tropical strap. RLG have offered to send me out a replacement one sized for my wrist (there has been no mention of any added cost thus far, so hopefully it will be free of charge ). To date their service has been outstanding. I had some minor concerns regarding your comments about the vibration of the movement when you wore it, mine has no such issues at all in this regard-don't even know I'm wearing it, no sound or buzzing AT ALL. Thanks again for a great, balanced review. I absolutely love 'em all. Theyz costing me a b... fortune, but don't tell the Missus.

I ordered a light blue Odyssey III in October at the preorder price of $300 based on previous glowing reviews of the Mark II, including yours. It seems like a much improved version (120 click bezel, stylish quick-release bracelet, Miyiota 9000 movement, 40mm case, raised applied markers, rubber tropic strap, etc..) for a similar price as the Mark II you previously reviewed. I personally like the Miyota 9000 as it is accurate (-4.5 sec. per day), slim and smooth plus, the rotor noise isn't noticeable unless you hold it to your ear and spin it, which I do not do. It is impressive to see what a Micro Brand can offer in this Price Range compared to a major established brand like Seiko. They have huge economies of scale, sell watches by the thousands with Hardlex Crystals, misaligned dials and subpar bracelets that are looked on as "traits" of the brand by many reviewers. As to the Name; mixed in with my established brands, I have a Pagani Design, Parnis, Steinhart, Dan Henry, Invicta, Borealis and, Daniel Wellington. I don't really see any of these names as a problem as they are obviously all made up and they have to call their watches something. The important thing to me is the watch design aesthetic and how it performs in relation to its specifications, price point and competition. In summary I think this watch is a beautiful, hi-spec, solid and greatly improved offering with an outstanding value proposition at the low end of a very completive market of $300 to $500 divers. PS, didn't notice the gap in the bracelet until I watched your review! Great one Jody.

Damn good looking watch, for sure, and I do appreciate the thinner profile. I also like the higher beat rate. I feel the accuracy would have to be better as well as the smoother second hand movement. So I had pre-ordered the blue fume version for 299.00 USD and have been wearing it on and off for a few weeks. To me the movement is a MAJOR improvement in terms of accuracy. I have been averaging within 2 sec of the atomic time per day with the Miyota and generally with my multiple NH35 series movements I am lucky to get less than 15 sec per day (maybe I am just unlucky with the NH35s). So to me the movement change alone was worth it (I am kind of OCD about accuracy). Overall, just a great desk diver and luckily I am in the "who cares that I can feel the rotor move" camp.

I preordered my Oceanfarer at the first opportunity and received it a few weeks ago, and I must say it is without a doubt a better watch than my mark 2 odyssea- for me. Looking at promotional images, I thought the jutting endlinks would ruin it for my small 6.5” wrists. However, once I got it on-wrist, I didn’t really mind. You can see around 8:00 when he’s talking about it, the male endlink does have a slight downward curvature that, at least for the top of my wrist, is perfectly sufficient. The biggest plus over my mark 2 is the SIZE! The thinner, smaller, and lighter Oceanfarer is a much better fit for my wrist, and honestly I think 40mm is the perfect dimension. Even the bracelet links are thinner and lighter. As for the movement, I have to say I’m not a big fan of the unidirectional winding. But would I trade it back for a NH35? NO WAY! The NH35 is the reason so many microbrand watches are so darn thick! 5.32mm height vs 3.9mm for the 9039 doesn’t sound like a ton, but once there’s a whole watch around it, it starts to make a big difference. You really start to feel it when you’ve got them side by side. 6bph vs 8bph, I couldn’t really care, but you can count it as another plus if you like. As for accuracy, I can’t complain! I haven’t gotten it on a timegrapher yet, but on wrist it’s looking like plus 2 to 8 seconds per day. I’m absolutely pleased with that. By no means is the mark 2 a bad watch, in fact I loved it and sold my SKX to keep it at one point. But the mark 3 is just that - an iterative improvement. Mark 3 Oceanfarer went in my watchbox, and my mark 2 went on eBay to a new loving home.

Posted my review on this some time ago. I think the movement upgrade and (personal opinion) better clasp makes the slight increase in price worth it (got mine at the $299 preorder though). The 40mm feels like a better 'average' size as well. Let's not forget the included watch roll, springbar tool and tropic strap. Great review as always!

I did the pre-order thing: 299.00 for the Ocean Blue. I love the watch ! I think the slim bezel adds focus to the beautiful dial face. While I did notice that small gap in band due to the male link, not a single person out of the many people that stopped to admire the watch ever noticed the gap. As for the movement, I prefer the smoother sweep of the second hand and the additional time accuracy - it is worth about 25$ US to me.

What a coincidence, I also bought the Black Blue and the Black Green models at 299 (preorder) and I personally couldn't be happier. It's the perfect watch for my needs, beautiful, comfy and always classy, the green one is my favorite one. Probably because I didn't have to pay the full 369 but I much prefer this movement, the 8 tics per second are much better looking IMO. Maybe the only thing I could complain about would be how hard are the links to remove but that's about it. The customer service is also top-notch!

I have the all blue version, and I’m glad I went that route. The lighter color tone brings out the best of the ceramic dial. As for the movement, I’d take the Miyota movement. I have plenty of NH35/4R36 etc watches and I’d prefer the higher beat to a once in a while noticeable “rotor wobble”. But maybe I’m spoiled for paying the preorder price and not the current MSRP. For the strap, the reason I’m thinking no quick release on the tropic is that they had to include the curved spring bars. I noticed some straps fitting snug, or ones with built in quick release not fitting at all (Barton Leather w/ Quick Release) because of the close tolerance. There isn’t a “cut away” like there is on other watches for the pivoting of the strap (my Vostok has torn my rubber and leather straps to bits for this reason cause of the sharp screw down and non cut out case portion). Thanks for the review Jody! I’m glad I waited for this V3, the bracelet is killer, I have nothing like it in my collection. The way it captures the light and reflects is awesome. Cheers~

Brilliant review. Can’t believe I’m actually considering buying yet another watch! I’m really captivated by the RLG Odyssea series: dressy dive watches that actually look attractive are few and far between and these look fabulous. Love the new bracelet despite the upper link gap. Personally I quite like the Miyota ‘wobble’ but normally just hear it rather than feel it. Like you said one of the advantages of this movement (apart from the higher beat rate) is of course it’s slimness so I’d rather spend another $50 or so on a slimmer watch with a high beat 9000 series inside it over one that houses a fatter, slower beat NH35/36.

It's funny. I recently was going through older videos and seen the review of the Odyssea 2. I fell in love with it and contacted RLG to see if they still offered it. They had a few left in stock and o am in the process of purchasing it. The Customer service rep Alson stated the reason they switched from the Seiko to Miyota movement was simply to thin out the watch. Obviously the Miyota is a slightly more exspensive hence the raise in price but either way it's worth it. Probably the best micro brand out there to date.

I love the NH35 movement & have it in several watches, but I see the Miyota 9 series as a huge upgrade. The irony is just a few years ago, it seemed the only watch using the versatile NH35 was Invicta. However, today dozens of micro brands are using it. I just wish some of these new brands offered the Miyota as either an option or instead of the NH35, as I think it's worth the extra $50 bucks.

I preordered this watch and have worn it ever since receiving it in late December. So far very happy with it (I originally ordered the black dial, but emailed RLG to switch to green, which they happily did for me). I love the look of the dial and the bracelet. Very comfortable, solid fit and finish for the price, but definitely not in the luxury category or anything. The one moan/niggle I have is that the bracelet link closest to the case bends a bit too much and can get caught on fabrics, so you have to watch out for that. Personally the Miyota movement seems better than the Seiko because it makes the watch a tad thinner. The rotor doesn't bother me (I honestly don't feel it). I also don't think the screw down crown feels very refined when you unscrew it to wind the watch. I think RLG could improve the machining there to upgrade the overall feel/experience of the watch. But the dial/sapphire bezel look absolutely amazing and for the $299 pre-order price I'm very happy with it.

Matthew Kang Thanks for the analysis of the watch. Helpful. I’m actually tempted to get one. One thing i don’t like about the Miyota 9000 series is the feel of the manual wind - you can’t even tell if you’re winding it, no nice tactile experience, no satisfying cog whirring. It feels a bit cheap and boring. However overall i think it’s a fantastic movement for the price.

@@jacc88888 it's probably unfair to compare to my Omega Seamaster 300m (which is pure buttery smooth) but yeah the hand winding isn't the most refined or pleasurable action. But it's better than an Orient and some Seikos. In this price range you can't complain too much I think. I don't think it's a deal breaker. If you want an upscale and colorful diver for every day it's solid. If you want something fancier I might recommend a Hamilton Khaki King if you like field watches

Matthew K Yes, i bet the manual winding on the Omega is amazing. I’m definitely tempted by this RLG. Also i do really like the Miyota 9000 series and have 2 watches with the movement inside. However I also love manually winding my automatics (and don’t care if it might wear the movement out faster either!). Thanks for the tip re Hamilton khaki king however apart from the intra-matic i haven’t found any Hamiltons that really speak to me for some reason. What I would really love would be a relatively cheap Type B Flieger watch that is purely manual wind but can’t seem to find one yet!

It's nice, and I love that dial, but I'm done with no-date watches. Always have liked what RL was offering, though. Nice to see these.

I purchased the ocean blue variant. The watch dial was great to look at but as a bracelet guy I never really got on with the look of the bracelet and the male end link. It causes the next link to protrude and overall aesthetically wasn't as smooth. So I sold it

I love RLG watches overall, but I decided last week to pass on this one for now, even though I like it, and I got the black PVD Collins watch instead from Marc at LIW. I have enough divers, even desk divers, and I wanted something with more of a unique design! Really love the passion that Jimmy Collins obviously has for the watch (and sunglasses ) business

Pre-ordered the Oceanfarer (Odyssea mark III) in pastel blue. Having the blue mark II as well. They are both amazing watches. The new version is so clean, my only complaint is the bracelet... And when putting on the tropic strap... Curved spring bars. The case to lug is too tight. Cheers

Got the green one and what a watch. I don't mind the rotor noise too much. This is the toughest pin and collar system I've had the displeasure of resizing, omg what a pain! On a Zelos swordfish, the flat links match well with the angular case, my complaint is that the similar flat links don't match well with the curvy case. I wish they went with the more traditional rounded links with this one.

Agree, they did need some effort! I guess a side effect of the small links. I see what you mean re the Swordfish. There was a lot of 'Zelos DNA' in this one, with the roll, the tropic, etc etc... Cheers!

@@JustOneMoreWatch are they all from the same factory? The tropic strap is the same as the Phoibos GMT one too , which has also been on the zelos lately. Maybe same as Sharkey and Hemdallr?

I had an Odyssey II, it was good but seemed a bit off on size. This does seem better but not sure. The 2 felt like it had too much empty space and this doesnt look like it fixes it even if it looks better overall. Also my bezel developed a crack and I have no idea how, may have fallen without me remembering though

Jody...got me again...I missed out on the Odyssea 2...I’ve been complaining for awhile about not being able to purchase one of these as it was not available…I’m putting in an order right now for the model 3. The bracelet looks too much like is yellow swordfish bracelet to be a coincidence. And the watch role is identical of course… This has to be the same company right? Or they are sourcing the watch role and the bracelet from the same company? I love my 2 Zelos watches...Can’t wait to add this to my micro brand collection! Thanks for the great review… As always!

The only things I don't like are the single direction winding, maybe not a deal breaker, but the huge gap in the bracelet by the easy release bar is a deal breaker. Other wise a very nice watch indeed. Judging by the materials used and the movement it is worth the $350 if a person does not mind the little things that you pointed out as negatives. I would not expect a high beat in this price range, but as for me I would choose bi-directional winding over high beat single direction winding, but like I said, perhaps not a true deal breaker for me. I think I would get it if not for the huge gap in the bracelet. It is too bad because they really are trying to give so much for a reasonable price. Thanks for the video and cheers.

Attractive and well spec'd enough that - "Let's make up a fancy sounding name! Hey how about 'Richard LeGrand'"- branding might be forgiven, but not sure about that bracelet or how well I'd get along with a noisy rotor. That green and black combo is just gorgeous. On the right strap it would be a killer.

Really great review. Smooth and sexy watch. Maybe you were a wee tough on the end links. I think the idea of having quick release on a bracelet is quite attractive. I guess the new movement was a stategic move. Personally I never look at how smooth my second hand sweep is, so an NH would have been fine. All ‘round I must say I think this watch is really attractive. Both of the colors you own are really pleasing.

I'm always down with the Miyota 9 series if it translates to a thinner case. (The microbrand NTH seems to have capitalized on this more than most with, at 11.5mm, one of the thinnest 300m divers around.)

Agree with your comments, this is an absolutely fantastic looking brute (the green dial one). I love the idea of including a tropical strap (I'm a 'bracelet guy), but these straps look great. Miyota is definitely an upgrade as far as movement goes. I was looking to get a green Phoibos PY007 (when they come back in stock soon), but am thinking the Rolex style Mercedes hands don't really 'rock my boat as much. I have the last of the blue quartz PCs with these hands, it looks 'O.K.' but doesn't get my juices flowing (so to speak!) This RLG actually looks way classier. With postage it is around U.S.$400, I know I will be the one forking out my hard earned cash, but do you think the RLG is worth an extra 100 notes? I commented today on one of your other reviews, your presentations are the best! Love your style! P.S. I 'pulled the trigger' on the GREEN one today, less than an hour later it was on it's way to NZ. I guess that's what you call SERVICE. RLG should be thanking you bigtime for that particular sale! A bit of a shame they didn't include a date window somewhere on this one, but I like them at 3 o'clock and it probably would have spoiled the dial a bit, having the really nice 6,9,12 and no 3.

I'd buy this one if I hadn't already bought a watch less than a month ago and it was a bit cheaper, because the uni-directional winding movement might be annoying and the bracelet's quik release wasn't necessary.

A quick release bracelet is wonderful..no quick release on the strap is a bad miss as quick release straps are common and would have be easy to include. I would be willing to pay $50.00 U S for the better movement.

I can tell the difference between 21600 vs 28800 beats per hour, it is much smoother. I prefer the higher beat rate. I think the price should be $300 USD.

I’d rather pay less and have the NH series movement, and did because I own a MK2 GMT bezel variant, or pay a smidge more, perhaps $400 for a Sellita movement.
