He said he was 2 thirds up the tree, and the tree height was how far up he was, plus a third. So the total height would only be a third of the 2 thirds that he was already up it. Which wouldn't make him 2 thirds up the tree to begin with. To be 2 thirds up the tree, the total height has to be half of the distance he is already up it half of 2 is 1, 1+2 is 3. 3 parts of something are split onto thirds.

I’ve seen the hang glider in a tree part many times and I can never understand David’s correction. If there are 2/3 the height of the tree below the hang glider pilot, that’s leaves 1/3 more above. Not ½. What am I missing?
@sws2124 ай бұрын
You can convert the tree into a height that actually makes sense when divided by 3. In this case, it would be 1.5 or 3. Here Lee is at the 2 mark and there's an extra 1/2 of his location or 1, making the full tree height 3 so each 3rd portion of the tree is actually 1/3 that tree. It's more language semantics because Lee is wanting to say 1/3 of the tree but his actual statement "his height + 1/3" is actually implying 1/3 of his 2/3 or 1/6.

@NicolasMogensen5 ай бұрын
Lee says he was 2/3s up the tree. Then he tells how tall the tree was, 2/3s plus 1/3 (of that). Let's assume the tree is 9 meters tall. The guy is 2/3s up, so that'll be 6 meters up. Now, that doesn't fit with Lee's second statement. If the guy is 2/3s up the tree, that's still 6 meters BUT Lee says "Plus 1/3". 1/3 of 6 meters is 2 meters this the tree would have to be 8 meters tall. David is a very logically thinking person so he immediately catches that. David is talking about 3/4s. Let's assume the tree is 12 meters tall. If he is 3/4s up the tree, he's at 9 meters. Adding a 1/3 of THAT height (3 meters) would give us the correct measure of 12 meters for the tree. So yeah, David is spot on.

The guy was 2 thirds up the tree. Lee says the height of the tree is "plus a third", which sounds right, but that maths only works if you're taking the entire height of the tree into account. So there are 2 thirds of the whole below him, meaning that half of that is 1 third of the whole. A third of the tree below him would account for 1 quarter of the whole. So what Lee said would mean the guy would be 3/4 of the way up. It's basically just the semantics of using the word "plus".

First Lee says the skydiver 'was about 2/3rds of the way up the tree'. Let's just say 2/3rds. And then that 'the height of the tree was how high he was plus a third'. By 'a third' Lee refers to the total height of the tree: 2/3x (of the total height) + 1/3x (of the total height) = x (the total height). However, David thinks that 'plus a third' should refer to the 2/3rds mentioned earlier, not to the total height. David is correct in the sense that we can't use the total height as the basis of calculations, because at this point it is unknown, so the correct way is to say 'how high he was (2/3rds) plus a half' (of the 2/3rds). So, we should take the known 2/3rds and add a half of 2/3rds. The result is essentially the same: 2/3 + 1/3. TLDR: Lee means 1/3 of the total height of the tree and David means 1/2 of how high the skydiver was, but it comes to the same result.

@@liammoody7640 I don't see how but then, I am an idiot. If the man is ⅔ up a 9ft tree, he's 6ft up so I guess plus a 3rd of 6ft would only be 8ft, where as plus a half of 6ft would make it a 9ft tree. So it bares out. I am indeed an idiot.

You're applying the logic wrong. Lee said he was 2/3 of the tree up. So below him was 2/3 of the tree and above him was 1/3. This means that above him was half of what was below him. The math is 2/3 + 1/2*2/3=2/3 + 1/3=1

It's a play on Lee's words because Lee is wanting to say he's 2/3 up with another 1/3 left of the tree but his actual words imply there's 1/3 of his current tree height left or 1/6. David is just using Lee's current definition of 1/3 left should be 1/2 because 1/2 of 2/3 is 1/3. It's very particular English language semantics and I'm assuming some of the audience are just going along with it because either way works.
