The 2020 morel mushroom season is upon us here in Georgia. Join me and the family as we head out on one of the best morel hunts we've ever had. In the video I discuss the type of habitat I find morels growing in, which is usually near ash trees and privet hedges near creeks and rivers. As you'll see in the video, we find some massive morel mushrooms and end up filling the tailgate of my truck up. Hope you enjoy the video.
Don't forget to subscribe and ring the bell so that you're notified of our future uploads.

I believe the tree you were looking at with similar bark to ash was an elm, which in my experience can produce MANY more morels than ash. Basically ash, tulip poplar, and elm all have similar bark and are all great trees for morels.

First time viewer. Nice family time in the woods, beautiful. You are so fortunate, congratulations. You may not be aware, though, that an 8 week old puppy shouldn't be out like that, yet. They still need to be kept warm an off of the bare ground for the most part, not to mention he's in a sort of shock from being uprooted from his litter. Thanks for the adventure, take care.

In a world of pandemic, and children being hopelessly addicted to the digital world.. same with a lot of parents.. This is a beautiful video.. and I hope this experience with your children keeps them connected to the earth in some shape or form.. and I hope they continue this small tradition onto their children.. If we continue to disconnect with nature and everything the world gives us, we will all perish.. Morels should be starting to pop up by end of next week here in Iowa.. Good luck hunting!

Zach, excellent video and pumped for morel season. We have had some luck while out turkey hunting in Dawson forest in the past few days as well with morels and oysters. Addressing your question about ash tree id versus sweetgum . . . The bark of ash trees is much more spongy/corky when you press into it with your thumb as compared to the sweetgum. Also, one of the trees you thought might have been an ash in this video is a hickory. Hickory has the diamond pattern and compound leaves similar to the ash, but again does not have as corky of bark. Hope this helps!

in Ohio, we can tell an Ash tree from sweetgum by if the tree has little holes everywhere, like someone shot it with a BB gun a few hinfred times....its not a foolproof way but most our Ash trees have been hit with the beetle borer bug and they drill little holes everywhere.....I go out about every day soon as the season starts, any week now, and I rarely find an ash tree that is not been hit by the beetle...some more than others, but I can recall on 1 hand in the last 5-7 years finding what I knew was an ash tree that was not hit by the beetle.

Hi. Newbie here . These morels you have to cook them or you can eat them raw? Also, are there any other non edible alike that I have to be aware so not too confuse it with? And lastly, where are they mostly found? Thank you. Great video
@roadkillavenger1325
@roadkillavenger1325 2 жыл бұрын
They make a lot of people throw up by eating them raw. You should always cook them. As for look-alikes, yes there are. Gyromitra and verpa. Eating those is a gamble imo. Some people get really sick. Once you get the hang of it, morels are extremely easy to identify. And they're mostly found in the woods. Blacks usually grow on hardwood hillsides. Yellows tend to like the greener parts of the woods. Always look around elm trees, ash trees, and sycamores. You can also find big yellows in pine forests. The best areas though are old strip mines that have grown over with forest. They seem to grow everywhere in the mines. Lucky me to have about 30,000 acres of public coal mine areas to hunt. I find sooooo many

You guys are doing it right! Past few seasons have been slim for us here in sw Ohio. All of our Ash trees are dead or dying from some bug. Wondering if that's played a role

I can only imagine those beetles are to blame. However, make sure to check around those dying ash trees. Sometimes the dying trees produce more than the living.

@@ZachByrd Appreciate the tip! We just broke 60s up here so I'm going to start watching. I've heard people here say they find them alongside railroad tracks as well. Have you had any luck with that?

I found one black morel in my back yard under a walnut, and another tree Do you think I should cut it or let it do its natural cycle so I get more next year??

Cut it and enjoy it lol. As long as you cut it at the stem rather than tearing it out of the ground you're all good

I might sound stupid for saying this, but why do you cut the stem with a knife rather than just pinching the stem?
