Welllll, in actual fact, it can, and does, happen especially when the defibrillator is used within 60 sec of the onset of a shockable rhythm. Now if he really was in asystole, that is not a shockable rhythm, but I have done 1 round of cpr with 1 dose of epi on a patient in asystole, got enough blood pumped to get them into v-fib, then shock them and have them convert to normal sinus. It is possible and happens on something of the order of around %13 in in-hospital arrests and around %3 in out of hospital arrests. Btw, I am a 16 year veteran paramedic, so I have seen it a time or two.
