Mortal Kombat 1 is such a goofy game looking back on it, Kano has a 360 motion, Sonya had an infinite, and Reptile is not only a fusion of Scopion and Sub Zero, but is also damn near impossible to get to without mastering the AI; Love this game

Fun MK fact: the reason Goro looks like a toy is because he sort of was. To preserve the look of the game, they made poseable Goro models and captured his moves through stop-motion. Out of the two original Goro models that were made, Ed Boon has one, and the other was posed so much that it fell apart over time.

The only game I believe I got a shot against Justin. For those ones who saw him in the endurance round (kano-raiden) and screamed to him every round he didn't properly punished raiden at the beginning of the switch (at least with freezing), I feel you.

There were five chip versions of MK1 that I know of. Each one made the game harder and fixed exploits. I don't think Reptile came until the third chip.

You can't slide sweep Shang Tsung in general because he's floating in the air. Also you almost had the Goro loop to easily defeat him. After knocking him to the ground immediately freeze him as he kips up. The punch chain is a CPU cheat. When it does it, the character stays in place unlike a player, who moves back.

Combos sucked in MK1 and MK2, and improved a bit when they introduced dial-a-combos in MK3/UMK3/MKT (probably leveraged from Killer Insinct since it was Midway at the time, to speed up the action). 😛 Glad the MK series started playing more like Street Fighter with high-mid-low mix-ups and combo-cancelling when they went back to 2D starting w/ MK9. 👍

I always picked Liu Kang because his fatality is super easy (360, no button) and it somehow qualifies as an uppercut for a stage fatality. This is extremely important in a game where there is barely any diversity in moves, looking cool isn't a thing, and you can't cheat to pick a boss.

He trolled me by setting it on max difficulty before I came in the room and tried to get me to beat it. Until several months ago, I have no idea what kinda gibberish Raiden says when he performs the Torpedo attack... all I heard was 'Johny bought a car!!!' or something along those lines. The actual story was pretty hilarious; the actor for Raiden accidentally smashed his balls while performing the Torpedo move, and the voice actor took consideration recording Raiden's agony by saying those gibberish lines to 'show' Raiden's pain and torment. I was an MK head while other folks were mastering Street Fighter. I started with MK2 for a reason, though. The difference between the first game and the second game is so great that it might as well be different series. I enjoy the early games in the series mostly because of the story and lore. Once they got to MK4, everything went downhill. One day, me and Justin will have to play MK together; we'd be evenly matched, I think.

Goro in MK1 wasn't too horrible, it's usually when I fight Kintaro in MK2 that almost made me rage quit back in the day. But I will thank MK2 for my bae in the series (yes, looking at you, Kitana!! 😍🤣) BTW, that silly but cute daughter of yours...🤣🤣...how old is Harper now, Justin??

A cheese against Goro in MK I when using Sub-Zero is to start throwing your freeze right when Goro hits the ground (so you have to knock him down first). The freeze will catch him in a frame state of getting up where it cannot/never blocks. Uppercut, slide, freeze, repeat. Works even at the hardest arcade level. Does not work against Kintaro in MK II. ____ MK AI for the first three games was truly horrible. It was either "Come spank me, Daddy" easy or "I will rip the guts of your future grandchildren out of your chest" ungodly hard. The input reads on the latter difficulty is real. This can be noted if you are retreating and do a back jump as the computer does a forward jump at exactly the same time. MK I and II were known for the AI to relax a bit on the input reads on the secound round if the computer won the first one. Then it would be back to Cheese Factor 10 (Aye Aye, Captain) for the third round.

You can actually cheese the MK1 AI really, really, REALLY hard with Raiden and Johnny Cage. You get the right distance away, and their jumping low punches can lock the AI down so that it either dies blocking or takes a series of jump punches to the face. You basically have to hit low punch IMMEDIATELY after jumping towards them. You'll hit on the way up, and regardless of whether it hits or they block, the jump kinda gets cancelled. You land and can immediately do it again. The hardest character to do it against is Liu Kang because he's the shortest. But even if you jump over their head, they don't really punish very hard. And every once in awhile the AI will be smart enough to duck, but it never really follows up and it never ducks consistently. So, yeah, the risk / reward is overwhelmingly in your favor once you get the hang of it. I used to routinely one shot the arcades back in the 90s with this trick. Not much for content, but exceptional for beating the coin-sucking parasite AI.

I like how Shang Sung came out of Shang Sung three different times. MK was so silly. But if you want that challenge, try MK for the console and crank it up to max. The cheats are open and the game doesn't care. Are arcade ports the only things on fightcade? For a lot of the games you are playing (or at least of the ones posted on KZbin), the superior versions were on console.

How many attempts did that take? Now take that amount and put it at either .50 or $1. In my area MK was 1.50 to stop kids from playing it
