The reason strongholds arent present in Bg1 is because in AD&D your PC doesn't get a stronghold until level 9+. Also, strongholds were a feature of D&D from its inception in the 70s through to the end of the AD&D era in 2000.

@@bangchanswebbrowsinghistor5145 i think mechanically and in terms of quest writing quality you're right, it is the better game. Personally I prefer the lower-stakes, just-starting-out feel of the story in BG 1. I love that low-mid level dnd experience. I also really enjoy exploring those big open maps and stuff.

8000000 with either the expansion pack or enhanced edition. The base game is 2.95 million or such. But xp requirements ramp up pretty quickly. the 161k from BG1 (Again, with expansion, base is 89k) will get a class to 8-10. BG2 goes to 34-40, so you can tell the dropoff. Mostly it's more spells and later epic abilities. One of the things about the series is it's quite possible (Though dangerous) to do low level runs by using found items well. In any case, I highly recommend both as the definitive western CRPG of it's era, and just as good today - the same way Doom is still amazing after decades, a similarity I rarely use for a reason.
@orarinnsnorrason46143 жыл бұрын
In the EE the level cap is 30 I think. In the base game the cap was a set number of xp, just like Glenn said.

There are certain things I like a bit more in 1 than 2. The map is one. But overall 2 has been a blast for years B.C. (Before Skyrim) and is a blast now. Believe it or not, I am new to the first game, BG1. Spoiler alert; If an assassin approaches you and claims you have been poisoned, listen to him. I sent him away and when the poison started taking effect, I could not find him. I am betting he was easy to find, and if I had the hours in 1 I had in 2, I would've known exactly where to look.

@@brothermutant7370 tbh this is the one thing i appreciate about NWN OG campaign. That and the fact they were creative whit the bestiary. Solo is rarely explored in D&D based games unless it is a self imposed challenge, so it feel interesting and different to build a character that can handle a wide variety of situation by itself. And it made me use all those scrolls and potions that i just forget about in most other games. It has many well known flaws, imo most notably the fact that NWN engine just refuse to respect your time, but i still enjoy it sometimes, especially whit the PrC mod that add most 3.5 classes.

I am replaying the entire saga now that it's on my ipad so this information could have been fixed in a patch, but in the original BG SOA you could get 2 strongholds as long as you completed the first (fighter) before you dual classed to mage or cleric. Once you dual classed you could do the second stronghold and still keep the first.

I'm glad to hear that BG2 has better companions and side quests. I'm playing through BG1 right now and it's hard to get through (just started chapter 4). I love side quests and exploring and learning/caring about companions but BG1 is not good at any of those.

Get the EE companions in BG1 - they are essentially written like BG2 companions. They interact with you at certain stages of the game, some have romance options, etc. To me that's 100% preferable to the old-school "Well, Edwin has the best stats and since companion choice has 0% impact, I'm just gonna take him."

Having played a Mage in BG 2 (I did the Dual Class Fighter/Mage route with my Baalspawn) I initially found it a lot fun once I got my fighter levels back...but that enjoyment really waned by the time of Throne of Baal. The sheer amount of magical defensive spells you have to strip off your opponents (plus Armor Class becoming completely pointless) and apply to yourself quickly becomes tedious.

Dual classing sounds terrible, as well as nonsensical. You can be, say, a competent fighter who wants to learn cleric spells. Makes sense that you’d start at level 1 cleric. It even makes sense that you’d stop leveling your fighter skills as you focused on you theology studies. Why the hell would you completely forget how to hold a sword? More importantly, how is that fun or effective? It’s just a shitty version of multiclassing where your character suck for twice as long as normal I assume it’s not like this in D&D anymore
@MortismalGaming2 жыл бұрын

simply because it would be to powerful, thus they had to add a big downside. nothing can beat dual class once you unlock both kits. in 3.5E you could lvl your classes parallel one to another, or multiple of them, but at a big exp penalty if i remember correctly.
