In the very second book of the Bible, Israel is already enslaved within Egypt. You've heard the story before, we know; Moses brought the Jews out of bondage by bringing God's wrath upon Pharaoh. Then they crossed the Red Sea, got some commandments, and took over their own little slice of Heaven...or at least Canaan. There is, however, so much more to the story. Eclipses, treasure cities, and the Sea Peoples all play into the magnificent story of Moses's escape from Egypt.

Someone posed the question to the two of them about have they ever questioned their faith, I have a really good story about questioning God and I like to share it anytime something like this comes up. When I was a child, my mom was a very good christian, church every Sunday, bible studies, all that stuff. I have an older brother (3 years older) who has had medical issues related to his brain and epilepsy since he was born. By the time he hit middle school he already had (I think) 2 brain surgeries and was in the hospital for his 3rd. My mom, of course, was distraught at him yet again dealing with issues at such a young age was kinda a wreck, but we were praying and hopeful everything would go well. Then one day when my mom was relieved from my brother's side to go home and rest for a bit, I saw her in our stairway on the phone. She had just gotten a call from the hospital, the doctors wanted to talk to her about the upcoming surgery. Now, I was fairly young, and it was quite a long time ago now, so I don't remember specifics of what they had to say to her, but I think it was just explaining some risks involved in the upcoming surgery, and I think the risk was pretty substantial, seeing as they were doing a third brain surgery. Anyways, she gets of the phone and falls to the ground weeping and cursing. She looked up and cursed at God, it was the first time I had ever seen her do anything like that, like I said she was a good Christian. She listed off all the things she's had to deal with in her life (she's also got several auto-immune diseases, one of which makes here essentially allergic to the sun), and then she just threw her hands up and said "You know what, I'm done. I'm done with you." I usually would try to go and comfort my mom, but hearing that I just stood there stunned. However, immediately after, like the very next second after my mom said "I'm done with you" the phone rang again... She answered angerly "what!?" Then, I couldn't hear what the man on the phone was saying, but my mom's entire attitude changed from anger to like a shock and regret and sad. She didn't say anything back, and slumped down crying again after just hanging up the phone. By this point I was even more freaked out, thinking the doctor had just called back to give some terrible news about my brother. So, I kinda shakily asked what they said to her to make her fall down crying. She looked at me and said, "It was a prayer group in California (we lived in Ohio, so across the country) and they were making random calls across the country to see if we needed anyone they could pray for." Long story short, my mom got angry and tried to say she cut ties with God to which immediately after we get a random call from across the country from a prayer group...The sheer improbability of that occuring at that very moment continues to blow my mind.... You talk about old testament God (or his prophets) having some good zingers, I'll say that he's still got it. BTW my brother got through the surgery and we sometimes call him numb skull since part of his skull was in a freezer for a bit while they did surgeries.

@@Reiman33 I was thinking that... I mean, it's an amazing and uplifting testimony, but not really about "questioning faith". Not to be insensitive of this family's pain either, but I think nothing can be worse than the cold emptiness of elusive faith. Like I have _literally_ asked to be struck with blindness or mutism if I must (as I know He would be capable of to get through to someone) because even _that_ would be preferable to the despair of my soul yearning for a loving God without the certainty of Him.
@ivetterodriguez9628

@@Reiman33 I see "cuttng ties with god"as no longer worshipping or following a god. Not necessarily abandoning the creed itself or disbelief in God/gods in general but rather detachment of God from creed or initiative to worship. Basically taking God out of the equation purposely for yourself. But I was raised Baptist so that's probably why I feel that the essence of God is within the creed. I can't separate it despite being apostate.

Understanding how God could let your children die a horrible death and greatly suffer is tough for Christians and often asked with no real answer given. Suffering must had been invented by God for a good reason. All our ills are there by God for reasons that benefit us as much or more then our boons , and its beyond our understanding why. This must mean that all experiences good or bad are enriching and a benefit to our spiritual needs . Understanding your happiness or well-being is not of Gods concern for you is not something many folks want to be true .

In my opinion, life itself is tragic. We come out brutally, painful, screaming and crying and vulnerable and dying is tragic too. It's up to us and the others around us to find the good in it, but difficult and sometimes horrible things still happen. We suffer here and keep faith to be free and happy in another life with God in heaven.

22:23 I'm always amazed at God basically giving things back when people give them up in devotion to him or in faith he will handle things. Like with Saint Lucy, who plucked out her eyes out that they would not lead men to sin, and God had the infinite cosmic comedy in his heart to gift her a set of even MORE beautiful eyes as a reward! Like, my man... Yes I know Moses comes back to his mother as an adult but it is still wild she sets him down the river so he wouldn't die and God's like "yea lemme send him back to her cuz she's a good mother."

It's interesting to note that how the first few plagues are connected. The river turns to blood, which causes the frogs to leave and eventually die. Without the frogs, lice and locusts multiply. The subsequent infestation causes a disease where the cattle die and sicken humans with possibly the plague or typhoid.

Love being able to listen to my favorite people talk about things that I know so much yet so little about in such a refreshing way. Genuinely interested in hearing about the Bible even if I'm not religious. I think there's definitely merit to the stories in some capacity, even if they're supposed to be more of a symbolistic lesson than anything, and I wish they were taught in a more interesting way and not, like, forced on you, which I think puts some people off, including myself. But I digress. It's a fascinating piece of text/historical document regardless of if you believe in it or not (at least in my opinion). First of these podcasts I've actually watched, but I'll go back and check out the rest! Hope you don't mind having a non-believer in your midst lol (No hate towards your religions, I just don't believe in anything in particular on a personal level).

Great video, just wanted to point out that towards the beginning, you mentioned how the Pharaoh "forgot" about the previous Pharaoh. In a possible explanation, a commentary says that what it actually means is that the new Pharaoh acted in a manner that made it *seem* as if he had forgotten about the prior Pharaoh. So just thought that was an interesting possible explanation

My favorite quote/roast in the Bible is by far "At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” John 8 2-11 I don't believe it says what he wrote, although if I'm mistaken please do correct me, but it's my belief that he was writing the names and sins of the Pharisees. The oldest to youngest just like how they left, a former pastor brought this up in one of his last sermons at my church and it's stuck with me ever since

I understand why a lot of christians tend to hold on to world-based evidence for their beliefs because atheists basically are asking for evidence, even though faith doesn't require evidence, but some people will be holding the stories of the old testament to historical scrutiny and quickly dismiss the whole faith when things don't correlate with one another. Which like Wendigoon said, it should not be the thing that determines whether God is real or not.

Fun Fact: The current Lutheran bishop of Oulu diocese in Finland Jukka Keskitalo (yoúk-ka kéhs-kee-tah-loh) had his episcopal robes made by an artist, who apparently web-searched Christian symbols (allegedly, probably didn't go like that). The artist made his robes black an the mitre to have st. Peter's cross on it. The Lutheran bishop hasn't really worn his mitre a lot after his episcopal ordination. Find the pictures by web-searching "Jukka Keskitalo hiippa" (ie. _Jukka Keskitalo mitre_ in Finnish).

The way Ben Shapiro described the Hebrew perspective of God hardening the heart of Pharoah is that after the first three plagues Pharoah would’ve likely released the Israelites out of fear of God’s wrath but that God instead strengthened Pharoah’s heart so he would have the free will to choose rather to release the Israelites and not to do it plainly out of fear.

my religion teacher in high school would constantly tell us misinformation about what god's name meant in English. I'm not Christian by any means anymore but I just want to send this entire podcast to her and prove multiple points I made in class

I dont know if youll see this, but after watching your videos on missing 411, I wanted to take another shot and learning more about religion, ive been enjoying these videos, but, and Im a little scared to ask the question but. I tried getting into religion half a year before covid, then covid hit and i got a job in healthcare which made it very hard to keep up with it, especially because the place I went stopped hosting mass. Ive made a lot of bad decisions and hurt a lot of people when I was younger, and now havent prayed, and the only times I do are when I need comfort. I dont feel that I deserve redemption even though Ive tried to be a better person, and someone that helps others and are there if they need me. My question is, do I deserve what I dont feel im worthy of, and is using religion as a way of comfort, rather than devoting myself to it make me a bad person, or one that has fallen to low?

One thing i really liked in that story (and torah stories in general) is that they don't whitewash characters. The jews were slaves, they lived as slaves, and so they were a bitter, suspicious and hostile people. They kept on not welcoming moses, always attacking him verbally or not giving him any respect. Because of course they would, it would be really unrealistic if they were happy and non bitter and never argued with moses.

In a way that also humanizes the Jews. Gods chosen people are still people

The 10 plagues of Egypt represent different gods of Egypt being smote by God Almighty. Turning against their people. Even the last plague death of the first born son was the final blow and the worst plague, for it killed the son of Pharaoh, their god incarnate
